Greet the class and introduce your Whole class
name. Have pupils greet and introduce
themselves.
Option 1: Have one group of pupils
sing the song on p. 11 in front of the class.
The class claps their hands.
Option 2: Invite one pupil to sing the
song with his/her own lyrics.

Option 3: Give pupils some flashcards
(of a car, cup, cat, cake, book, bike, …) and
let him/her talk about possession, e.g. I have
a car.
Have pupils open the books and look
at Unit 3, Lesson 1 p. 14, saying Open the
books and look at Unit 3, Lesson 1 (Page 14).

1. Listen and repeat

10 minutes

Step 1: Open books open or access hoclieu.vn. Have Whole class
pupils look at the picture, saying Look at the
picture, please! and answer some questions
such as Who are they? Where are they? And
What are they doing? Draw pupils’ attention
to the words next to the things and the colour
of the letter A/a (as mentioned in Input in
Teacher’s guide). Check comprehension.
Step 2: Ask pupils to point to the letter A/a. Have Individual
them listen and repeat the sound of the letter work

than once, if necessary.

Step 3: Tell pupils to point to the hat and the word

Step 4: Repeat the same procedure with the words

Step 5: Play the recording again and have them
listen, point to the letter A/a and the words
apple, bag, can, hat and repeat in groups
until they feel confident. Give further support
to those pupils who find it difficult to do the

Call a few pupils to pronounce the sound of
the letter A/a and say the words apple, bag,
can, hat in front of the class (you may say
Great! when they perform well).

2. Point and say 10 minutes

Step 1: Have pupils look at the picture again, saying
Look at the picture, please! Ask them to
describe the picture. Draw their attention to
the letter A/a and the things, if necessary.
Get them to point to the letter A/a and say it,
saying Point to the letter A/a and say, please!
Step 2: Ask pupils to point to the apple and say the
word apple as a model, saying Point and say,
please! Then ask one pupil to point to the
apple and to say the word apple in front of the
class. Correct pronunciation, if necessary.
Step 3: Follow the same procedure with other things.
Go around and correct pronunciation, if

game Hot seat. Explain how the game is
played (as mentioned in the steps below).
Check comprehension.
Step 2: Divide the class into teams of four pupils. Call
one pupil from each team to sit on the “hot
seat”, facing the classroom with the board

Write a word on the board, e.g. bag. Ask one
of the team members to describe it to help

Continue until each team member has

Option 2: Ask a group of four to play
Hot seat with the target vocabulary they have
learnt.

(page 6) in pairs or groups.
Get pupils to open their books and
look at Lesson 2, p. 15 (saying Open the
books and look at lesson 2, please!).

3. Listen and chant

10 minutes

Step 1: Open books or access hoclieu.vn. Have Whole class
pupils look at the chant. Say Look at the
chant, please! Draw pupils’ attention to the
first verse and explain its meaning. Ask them
to pay attention to the letter A/a and the
words apple, bag and the sentence There’s
an apple in the bag. Check comprehension.
Step 2: Play the recording for pupils to listen and to Individually

Put the class into two groups to practise
chanting and clapping. Each of the groups
should sing one verse of the chant.
If there is enough time, invite some groups to

the front of the class to chant and clap their
hands. The rest of the class may clap their
hands along to the rhythm. Say Excellent!
when they perform well.
For a better class, encourage pupils to
change some lines of the chant and sing it in
front of the class. E.g.
There’s a cat on the hat.
There’s an apple in the bag.
There’s a bag on the table.
There’s a can on the table.

5. Look and trace 10 minutes
Step 1: Access hoclieu.vn. Have pupils look at the
letter A (upper case) and the letter a (lower
case). Say What can you see? Point to the
upper case A and say This is the upper case
A. Then point to the lower case a and say
Step 2: and this is the lower case a. Ask some pupils
to make sure if they recognize the two forms
of the letter. Then have pupils look at
hoclieu.vn and identify how the letter a (upper

Ask pupils to trace the letter A/a, saying Now

demonstrate by air tracing or tracing the
broken lines of the letter A/a on the board.
