What is Interpreting? Specify some situations of interpreting assignment,
and state main qualities required accordingly. (500 words)
Interpreting is rendering information and ideas from one language into
another language by means of speaking. It bridges the communication gap
and serves as a communication tool in which the speaker’s message is
transmitted via the interpreter’s voice. During the interpreting assignment,
the interpreter may experience several unexpected situations in which some
main qualities are required to be able to successfully perform the task.
Firstly, a situation that the interpreter regularly encounters witth certain
topics, such as serious illness, mental health conditions, or volunteering in
disadvantaged areas, is that the client is too emotional and sensitive. In this
circumstance, the interpreter's most important responsibility is to be faithful
to maintaining the same meaning and tone as the original message. In other
words, nothing should be omitted, and nothing should be added unless it is
to explain a word or phrase that the customer does not understand. This
approach will most accurately portray the client’s understanding and
emotional state.
Secondly, the client may be angry because he blames the interpreter for not
interpreting accurately or he feels dissatisfied with the services he receives.
It is helpful to consult with colleagues and seek support from them to get
suggestions about how to deal with such challenges. When the interpreter
faces with a challenging client or situation individually, she should not
escalate the situation, instead, she must calm down and respond nicely. She
can then acknowledge the client's feelings by saying, "You're mad at me
because..." and asking, "Can I hear you correctly?". Evenly, the interpreter
should apologize for causing the client any discomfort.
Finally, the interpreter might experience a situation in which the client
refuses to cooperate with the interpreter. There are several reasons why the
client rejects to be provided with an interpreter. In some cases, the clients
feel that they can communicate and have a continuous, meaningful
conversation without an interpreter, or they want to be sure that the


significant content they discuss in the meeting will remain confidential. In
such a case, the first thing an interpreter should do is to clarify and address
the causes. After that, she must ensure she is aware of the confidential
nature of the meeting and assure the client that she will keep everything
confidential. If the client states that he does not need an interpreter, the
interpreter should insist that she be there at least for the first session. If it


turns out apparent at the first session that the interpreter is not necessary,
she cannot stay for subsequent sessions.
In conclusion, interpreting requires not only technical language proficiency
or extensive general knowledge but also critical thinking and problemsolving skills to overcome any situation the interpreter encounters.
Therefore, the interpreter must improve, perfect herself as well as prepare
and anticipate all possible situations to be more confident in interpreting.
