Aims - an advanced level study of the financial world

finance and your ability to apply this knowledge

Objectives - a unique practical learning experience
Whilefocussingontheprofessionalknowledgeandskills
neededforworkinginthefieldofbankingandfinance,the
programme also has a set of more general objectives
relatedtotheawardofanMBA:
A critical, questioning and analytical approach to
managementtheory,practiceandinformation;
The ability to evaluate management techniques,
tools and models generally, as well as in the
contextofbankingandfinance;
The use of conceptual frameworks in addressing
managementandbusinessissues;
Therecognitionoftherelationshipbetweenideas
andpractice;
An understanding of research methodology,
including abstracting meaning from information
andsharingknowledge;

Validation - a prestigious Masters qualification
The MBA Banking and Finance is validated by Coventry
University. This means that although the programme is
taughtanddeliveredbyBITE,academicquality(amongst
other issues) is overseen by Coventry Universtiy. At the
endofyourperiodofstudy,yourawardwillbeissuedby
CoventryUniversity.
Admission to the programme
-Candidatesforentrywillnormallyhaveafirstdegreein
financeoraccounting,orafirstdegreewithcomponentsof
finance, or an equivalent professional qualification and
experience.
-Candidateswillbeinterviewed,wherethisispossible.In
the case ofsome overseasstudents,where interview by
the tutors atBITE is impractical,offersmay be madeon
thebasisofreferences,reportsfromagentsandallother
availableinformation.Candidateswhosefirstlanguageis
notEnglishandwhohavenotbeeneducatedinEnglishat
secondary level, must obtain a minimum IELTS score of
6.5(orequivalent)

Learning.TwotypesofAccreditedPriorLearningmaybe

Attendance mode
Full-time: Thefulltimeprogrammeisthreesemestersover
oneyear.
Part-time: Thepart–time programme isofferedon a day-
release / evening mode. This can take up to 2 years,
dependingonthepace.

Directing The Business - a dynamic approach
Thismodulefocusesonaspectsofdirectingbusiness,
includingstrategicmanagementandhumanresources
management. Students will explore the dynamics of
directing financial positions using theoretical and
practicalknowledge.Themodulewillintroducestudents
tothechallengesandpressuresplacedontopbusiness
managers by enabling them to critically reflect on
existingpractices.Thismoduleconsistsofthefollowing

Strategic Finance
Thismodule explores corporate challengesinfinance,
governanceand bank asset andliabilitymanagement.
Studentswillconsiderhowdifferentinvestmentprojects
generatedifferentcashflowsanddifferentlevelsofrisk.

-ManagementofBankingOperations
Islamic Finance
TheaimofthisModuleistointroduceanddevelopthe
concepts of Islamic finance and banking as an
alternative to conventional banking. Students will
explore Islamic economics and finance, Islamic views
on trade and commercial activity, Islamic banking in
different parts of the world, Islamic financial markets
andIslamicmutual funds.Thismoduleconsistsofthe
followingtopics:

-AlternativetoConventionalBanking
Trading Finance - an international perspective
The aim of this module is to develop a fundamental
understanding of trading finance including financial
markets, institutions and bank asset and liability.
Students will examine the issues involved in the
investment market and the process of financial
intermediation, constructing an optimum investment
portfolio, evaluating the performance of that portfolio
and adjusting its composition through time to ensure
that its performance remains optimal. This module

Research Methods and Dissertation
Theaimofthismoduleistoprovideanunderstanding
ofresearch methodology and thepracticalprocedures
that underpin the successful execution of an MBA
BankingandFinancedissertation.Thismoduleconsists
ofthefollowingtopics:
-Thenatureandpurposesofresearchinbusiness
-Formulatingaresearchtopic
-Carryingoutaliteraturereview
-Methodologyanddatacollection
-Researchmanagement
-Preparingaresearchproposal
InordertobeeligiblefortheawardofMasterofBusinessAdministrationastudentmustobtain180levelMcredits.
Astudentwhoobtains120levelMcreditsbypassingModules,nottakingintoaccountthedissertation,maybe
consideredfortheawardofPostGraduateDiplomainMBABankingandFinance.Theprogrammeiscomposedof
4taughtmodulesandaDissertation(180Mcreditsintotal)tobecompletedinaperiodof12monthsonafull-time
basis,or24monthsonapart-timebasis.Therearenooptions–allthemodulesarecompulsory.Theprogrammewill
bebasedonfour30creditmodulesanda60creditdissertation.

Personal Tutors - helping you cope with personal issues
Sometimes yourquestion or problem might not be todo
with yourcourse but comes from your personal life.The
othertimesyoumightnotfeelabletoapproachtheperson
suggested above. In these cases you can see your
PersonalTutor.
Each student is allocated a Personal Tutor. This is a
member of the academic staff who they can go to,
individually, for general guidance and advice. Personal
Tutorsmaydiscusskeychoices(e.g.optionchoices)and
reviewyourprogress.Youwillbenotifiedoftheidentityof
youPersonalTutorvialistspostedonyournoticeboardor
viatheforum.
A clearly defined investment strategy
The assessment strategy devised for this programme
takesinto accountboth themode ofassessment and its
timingwithinthecourse.Eachmodulecomprisesatleast
two different forms of assessment. At the beginning of
each semester students will be given a schedule, which
clearlyidentifiesdeadlinesforeachtypeofassessmenton
eachmodule.
The mode of assessment used for each module is
designedtomatchthelearningoutcomesandassessment
criteriaforthatmodule.Theseassessmentswillhelpbuild
thelearnersknowledgeintherelevantareas.

"Self-help"manualsandbooksonstudyskillsandawide
rangeofothermaterialsthatarehelpfulinmaximisingyour
efficiency and effectiveness as a student are held in the
library.TheInstitutecanalsooffersomesupporttothose

Award of MBA
AssessmentattheendoftheprogrammefortheawardofthedegreeofMBAwillbebasedonawrittencasestudyand
anoralpresentation.Programmeparticipantswillberequiredtodrawontheirlearningfromtheprogrammeandfrom
theirexperienceofmanagementgainedfromthe‘managementinaction'project,togetherintheformofawrittencase
studyoftheirmanagement.
Theywill also be requiredtomakean oral presentation of theircasestudytotheir fellow course membersandthe
programmeassessors.Forthisassessmentparticipantswillneedtodemonstratethattheyhaveappliedmanagement
principlestotheirprojectandbeabletosupporttheirclaimbyreferencetoexamplesoftheiractualpractice.
