Appendix 1
Report on
“Establishment of the farmer interested club of Mong Cai pig production”

In recent years, pig production in general has faced many difficulties, leading to decreasing pig
population. Besides the epidemic diseases have occurred continuously such as PRRS, foot-and-
mouth diseases etc., so the farmers experienced difficulty to confront the market. Livestock
products are created with small amount and pressed output prices by business man when there are
more products. In addition, the food safety can not be controlled.
With the goal of contributing to support farmers to transfer the economic structure in agriculture
and creating the Mong Cai breeding region in Hai Lang district - Quang Tri province, we have
proposed to establish the farmer interested club of Mong Cai pig production to meet the supply of
Mong Cai breed with high quality for the farms in Hai Lang area as well as other regions.
The purposes of establishment of the farmer interested club of Mong Cai pig
production
- To connect households raising Mong Cai pigs in Hai Thuong and Hai Phu communes to
share their experiences in raising Mong Cai pigs.
- To consult livestock product consumption.
Contents and methods
Contents
- To establish the farmer interested club of Mong Cai pig production (the Mong Cai pig
farms joining the project are voluntary to participate)
- The club activities are organised regularly and effectively
- To set up the planning for each activity of the club.
Methods
• Using the group discussion method with member participation, get group members as
the center and improve the knowledge of members based on their available experience
to exchange and learn each other as well as to encourage members participating

actively to explore new ideas and knowledge.
• Using the basic methods in the activities of the club with club member participation as
follows:
- Brainstorming method: A method of collecting different ideas about a certain topic
in short time with high speed and collecting opinions should not criticize or
evaluate.
- Group discussion method is one method of operation of the group with active
participation of members. The group members discuss specific questions and
contents that were planned in the group activities and the project staff or group
leader only act as the organizer and guider and the evaluator.
- Reality observing method: a method requires the group members to observe real
examples and based on that they should draw the lesson-learned.
The group members can observe and analyze the advantages and disadvantages as well as offer
solutions to overcome the disvantages.
Similar to the group discussion method, the project officers only guide, observe and support
during observing.
1. Established 3 Mong Cai pig raising interested clubs in Hai Phu and Hai Thuong
communes.
- The Mong Cai pig raising interested Phu Hung club in Phu Hai commune and the Mong
Cai pig raising interested An Khe club in Hai Thuong commune were established on 24
th

October 2008.
- The Mong Cai pig raising interested Thuong Xa club in Hai Thuong commune was
established on 26/10/2008.
- Three Mong Cai pig raising interested clubs operated effectively and shared experiences
of pig raising together.
2. The club activities
2.1. Equipment and capital
- Each project group is equipped for a bookshelf, books (Pig raising manual, Chicken

raising manual, Duck raising manual, goat raising manual, etc.) and newspapers
(Agricultural newspaper and agricultural magazine). This bookshelf is put in the group
leader’s house.
- Capital is contributed by the club members and CARD project. The CARD project
funded 82% and the club members contribute 18%.
2.2. The club activity situation: During establishing pig production interested club, members have
developed rules and regulations of the club. The club activities
have based on the rules and regulations. The clubs organize
regularly two meetings per month. Each group has held two
meetings from established date to January 2009.
The first meeting (held from 27
th
– 30
th
November 2008):
- Each group unified the activity rules and regulations. Two poor members in each group
were supported a loan within 01 years.
- NIAH staff trained the club members on the use of EM product in agriculture such as
cultivation and animal husbandry sectors (feed processing and environmental sanitation).
Animal waste is composted by EM and compared to the traditional manure composting.
- To support EM product to compost animal waste
- The project evaluation: all members of 3 groups prefer to learn new techniques applied
in animal husbandry to reduce environmental pollution. However, the learning level
depends on each group: due to members in Phu Hung club did not know what is EM
product, they applied reservedly; members of two clubs in Thuong Xa commune knew
EM product, but they only applied it in crop production and observed the effect of EM
product on crop production; members of An Khe group used EM product in the dead
animal treatment, they obtained new technique quickly and applied in environmental
sanitation.
The second meeting (held from 4

th
to 6
th
January 2009)
Each leader report the group activities:
• Phu Hung group:
The situation of livestock production:
Three households had pigs infected heavy diseases with symptoms such as cough, heavy
breath, fever (including households: Tram, Phu and Cuc). The NIAH staff together with
veterinary officials in Hai Lang district conducted to take disease samples and sent to the
regional veterinary office to analyze.
Animal waste was treated effectively by EM product. Households are very welcome and
support the use of EM product for animal waste treatment, because animal waste
composted time is faster (animal waste is composted by EM product within 15 days and it
can be brought to use), reducing feacal odor. The household proposed the project to
continue supporting EM product.
• Dai An Khe group
Three households had dead pigs and two households had sick pigs with symptoms of
cough, heavy breathing, high fever. A household named Mr. Dan had a Mong Cai sow
supported by the project gave the first birth with 11 piglets.
Households like to use EM product, so they propose the projects to continue providing
EM product for them.
• Thuong Xa group
The situation of livestock production:
Households had dead pigs suh as: Mr. Trang (1 pig); Ms. Lien (1 pig); Mr. Cuong (2 pigs)
Households had sick pigs such as: Mr. Trang (2 pigs), Mr. Cuong (1 pig)
Households they propose the projects to continue providing EM product for them
A household (Hoa Thoi) built biogas system and this biogas system has been operated
well.
NIAH staff have trained farmer on respiratory disease and PRRS disease.

NIAH officers delivered Tet gift and provide EM product for each group member.
Besides NIAH officers also reminded them on the environmental hygiene, as well as
informed the households about house hygiene checking (faecal container, and wastewater
path).
Evaluation of the project officers: although farmers called commune veterinary staff to
treat their sick pigs (7-10 treated days), the number of sick pigs within two months is
relatively high and some of the sick pigs were died. The households would like to use EM
product in animal waste treatment.
* Overall comments:
- Households are expected to apply advanced techniques in animal husbandry as well as
animal house sanitation.
- The groups initially operated effectively. In each meeting, in addition to the project
officers trained for the club members, they shared experiences of the disease symptoms
and treatment methods.
Exists:
- All most pigs of the households only vaccinated following the vaccination schedule of
the veterinary districts (2 times/year), so the vaccination for pigs following the age is
necessary.
- Market price changes continuosly. Feed price is high, while pork price is constantly,
resulted in high pressure for farmers.

3- Directions and suggestions for next group meetings
- To maintain the group activities and periodic meetings (one time/2 months).
- To discuss to find pork consumption market.
- The leaders have responsibility for the group activities: every 02 - 03 group meetings
with officials of the project the leaders have to organize themselves the meeting at least 1
time (the project staff do not participate in this meeting).
- To ccontinue consulting and guiding framers about diseases that pigs are easily infected
- To provide EM product for farmers and instruct farmers to raise earthworm.

Report on
“Activities of clubs "The same interested in raising Mong Cai pig"
In Quang Tri, Year : 2009

1. Results obtained from 10/2008 to June of 2009
1.1. Establishment of Famers Clubs “The same interested in raising Mong Cai pig

production”.
October of 2008, 3 farmer clubs "The same interested in raising Mong Cai pig" was
established in three villages: An Khe, Phu Hung and Thuong Xa by the decisions of
the Chairman of Hai Thuong and Hai Phu Commune. Members of each group consists
of households are involved in the project CARD-004/05VIE of each village, there are
clear regulations for the operation of the group. To support the initial activities of the
group, the project was to establish a fund to support group activities, a risk fund for
sick and died pigs, book sheds, supplying materials on pig production areas and
monthly support Groups to buy 02 news paper on Agriculture and Technology.
Three Mong Cai pig raising interested clubs operated effectively and shared
experiences of pig raising together.
1.2. The club activities
Each group has organized the 02 meeting.
* First meeting ( 27/11-30/11/2008):
The NIAH team was training for members on the use of bio-product EM in
agriculture: farming and animal husbandry (food and environmental hygiene).
Support for household products EM to compost manure.
* Second meeting (4/01-06/01/2009):
- Team Leader reports the pictures of the group.
- The NIAH staff was training for households on 02 diseases: respiratory
diseases and diseases “Blue Ear”.
- Distribute gifts to farmers by NIAH staff on the occasion of TET and
continue to provide products EM for each member. Besides also remind
them about hygiene and environment, informed households will have to
check hygiene cages (hole incubation and path of wastewater). The farmers
enjoyed using microorganism in matters cages.

2. Some achieved results in 2009
2.1. Consulting and support to build biogas systems.
In order to ensure environmental hygiene and development of sustainable

breeding pigs region, one of the important thing is building biogas systems to waste
treatment and provide gas for the family. The project has consultanted and supported
to households who raising pigs with large-scale 5 or more sows and 20 pigs meat/1
household) to build biogas system. It was very difficult at the begining to mobilize
households with large-scale to build biogas (some farmers in the commune wasn’t
2

successful in buiding biogas systems before), but now after seeing a good effect some
other households asked for supporting to build.
The bio gas system is operating very well, gas is generated not only sufficient for
home cooking, but also cook food for pigs, lighting, heating etc. Technical built bio-
gas is always improving, so the building bio-gas in the updated technical construction
better than the first.

2.2. Consulting and support on hygiene, prevention and waste treatment.
Sustainable livestock development without affecting the health of humans and
animals is one of the problems concerned for implementation. In addition to support
for multiple pig households to build biogas systems for waste treatment and supply of
gas for families, the project have been carried out to instruct households in waste
treatment by EM biological product, has provided free EM product to households.
Consultant on the impact of environmental pollution around the pig cages to the
health of humans and animals also said the benefits of implementing new
technologies to reduce pollution.
Guiding the way to compost manure in the holes to kill the pathogen and increase
efficiency of using manure for crop. Help farmers to improve wastewater slot so that
limit environmental pollution.
Combined with the District Veterinary staffs allocation antiseptics for project’s
households.
Distributed more than 300 doses of free vaccin Ecoli to the farmers to prevention
piglets diarrhea, these vaccin not only be used for households under the project but

also was distributed to farmers in the district of Hai Lang (through Hai Lang district
veterinary stations).

2.3. The anniversary 1 year of establishment of Farmer clubs “The same interested
in raising Mong Cai pig production”.
The 5 of November, 2009: On the occasion of 1 year establishment Farmers groups,
we held a celebration to assess the results achieved after one year operation of the
group, and in this ceremony we have organized a contest of knowledge pig raising
beteen three groups. Results of a first prize for farmers Club "The same interested in
raising Mong Cai Pig in Dai An Khe", the second prize is for two rest groups (the
programe of ceremony and content of questions and answers of the competition
please see attached files).

2.4. Consulting and support for raising Mong Cai pigs.
- Consulting technical on AI for all sows. Currently, most farmers can do themselves
on AI for sows at their farms.
- Observing and evaluating productivity of pigs breeding sows/male MC: Households
have recorded data on reproduction of sow to the “Sow note book”. However, some
farmers recorded very well (Mr. Cuong in Thuong Xa, Mr. Dan in Dai An Khe, Mr.
Danh in Phu Hung …) but some others did not complet because level of their
knowledge is limited.
3

- Selected and created 5 demonstration farms, That is: The Mr.Dan’s farm ( The An
Khe), famrs of Mr. The and Mr. Danh (Phu Hung), famrs of Mr. Trang and Mr.
Cuong (Thuong Xa). Expected in 2010 with supported by CARD project there will
be six more demonstration farms on sustainable pig production.

2.5. Checking and controlling the project implementation
5 Australian officers came in to work: Dr. Tony, veterinary specialist and Dr.

Cholin, pig house and environmental expert, worked at each household to check and
evaluate the project implementation. Also they adviced farmers on the treament of
pneumonic disease that have been happening in the project area as well as consulted
on pig house improving, the ventilation, the wind flow and pig house temperature etc.
Dr.Kit, veterinary expert, and Ms.Tarni, specialist on data updating and completing
through the Website. Prof. Darrent Leader project went to evaluate and complete the
reports, beside that he supports farmers who were damaged by typhoon in September
of 2009 the fund to repaire pig house and medicine for pigs.
The monitoring and evaluation of the project experts are very necessary and useful
for farmers, they shared their experience of pig raising as well as learned a lot of new
knowledge about technological advance in livestock production in the developed
countries. At the same time, they received the dedicated guidance of experts how to
raise pigs with better performance through pig shed improving regarding to the
ventilation in summer, the warm in winter and ensuring good environmental
sanitation and effectively disease prevention and treatment.

3. Advantages and difficulties during the project implementation
3.1. Advantages
The NIAH officers participating in the project have experiences in
implementing projects, transferring the technological advances to farmers and using
farmer participatory training approach.
Quang Tri province has pig consumption market to Laos, so the development
of Mong Cai sows producing pig breeds is the necessary need of farmers.
Despite the farmers in Quang Tri province are poor, they prefer to learn new
knowledge about animal husbandry and have aspirations to develop pig raising
effectively. Project fund is a very big help for farmers implementing their aspirations.
3.2. Difficulties
Not all the households participating in the project are of the same academic
level and pig raising experience, so they received the technical advance difficulty.
Foot and mouth disease and PRRS continuously occurred in the last 6 months

in 2007 and the first 6 months of the year 2008 in Quang Tri province did not only
damage the economy of the farmer households but also slow the pace of the project
implementation. Number of pigs also reduced significantly after ending epidemic
diseases, so it should require more time to recover the pig herd.
