Through our student work experience program, the education authority provides over 9,000 work
experience placements for young people each year. Our program is designed to offer employment
opportunities for students that will enrich their academic studies and help them gain valuable workrelated skills thereby improving their chances of finding a good job after graduation. A placement
does not need to be related to a particular field of study and so participants may even discover areas
of work they have never considered before.
All secondary and post-secondary school students in full-time education are eligible to apply for the
program. Individual case managers will determine the minimum level of academic achievement
required for each job. During an academic term, a student may work part-time. During the summer
holiday a student may work full-time or part-time. The education authority is responsible for the
recruitment of all students under the work experience program. Applicants apply in person to our
office and we refer candidates to the appropriate department.

Our intership program is designed specifically for post-secondary students, whether part-time or fulltime. Students on the internship program are given an assignment related to their research area
offering them the chance the placement of students under this program and they will determine the

duration of a work assignment. These traditionally last four months but internship assignments may
vary from 4 to 18 months. Students in this program normally work full-time.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, c, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions
Pollution emitted in industrial areas represents a threat to human health and the surrounding natural
resources. We have a tendency to believe that the production processes are the only source of
environmental damage, and often forget about the possible long-term effects of harmful production
practices. We may think that the closure of these huge industrial areas would improve the quality of
the environment. Unfortunately, this ignores the threat of the remaining waste, which is abandoned
and poorly stored. It represents an even bigger danger because it stands neglected as it degrades and
leaks into the earth without any control at all.
Changes in the water chemistry due to surface water contamination can affect all levels of an
ecosystem. It can affect the health of lower food chain organisms and, consequently, the availability
of food up through the food chain. It can damage the health of wetlands and damage their ability to
support healthy ecosystems, control flooding, and filter pollutants from storm water runoff. The
health of animals and humans are affected when they drink or bathe in contaminated water. In
addition water-based organisms, like fish and shellfish, can pile up and concentrate contaminants in
their bodies. When other animals or humans eat these organisms, they receive a much higher dose of
contaminant than they would have if they had been directly exposed to the original contamination.
Contaminated groundwater can badly affect animals, plants and humans if it is removed from the
ground by manmade or natural processes. Depending on the study of rocks of the area, groundwater
may rise to the surface through springs or seeps, flow sideways into nearby rivers, streams, or ponds,
or sink deeper into the earth. In many parts of the world, groundwater is pumped out of the ground to
be used for drinking, bathing, other household uses, agriculture, and industry.
Contaminants in the soil can harm plants when they take up the contamination through their roots.
Eating, breathing in, or touching contaminated soil, as well as eating plants or animals that have piled
up soil contaminants can badly affect the health of humans and animals.
Air pollution can cause breathing-related problems and other bad health effects as contaminants are
absorbed from the lungs into other parts of the body. Certain air contaminants can also harm animals
and humans when they contact the skin. Plants rely on breathing for their growth and can also be

affected by exposure to contaminants moved in the air.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
following questions.
Some doctors think that you should drink a glass of water each morning. You should drink this water first
thing, before doing anything else. The temperature of the water should be similar to body temperature; neither
too hot nor too cold.
Why should you drink this water? Water helps your body in many ways. It helps clean out your kidneys. It
prepares your stomach for digestion. Water can also help your intestines work better. After drinking water, the
intestines can more easily take out nutrients from our food. Water also helps us go to the bathroom more easily.
Scientists suggest that people take in 1,600 milliliters of water each day. But don’t drink all of that water in one
sitting. If you do, your kidneys will have to work much harder to eliminate it. It’s better to drink some in the
morning and some in the afternoon. Some people think it’s better to drink between meals and not during meals.
They think water dilutes the juices produced in our stomachs. This can interfere with normal digestion.
Are you drinking enough water every day? Check the color of your urine. If it is light yellow, you are
probably drinking enough. If your urine is very dark yellow, you probably need to drink more water. A little
more water each day could make you much healthier.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
questions.
Educating children at home as an alternative to formal education is an option chosen by families in
many parts of the world. The homeschooling movement is popular in the United States, where close to one
million Children are educated at home. In Canada, 1 percent of school-age children are homeschooled, and
the idea also enjoys growing popularity in Australia, where 20,000 families homeschool their children. The
movement is not limited to these countries. Homeschooling families can be found all over the world, from
Japan to Taiwan to Argentina to South Africa.
Homeschooling is not a novel idea. In fact, the idea of sending children to spend most of their day
away from home at a formal school is a relatively new custom. In the United States, for example, it was not
until the latter part of the nineteenth century that state governments began making school attendance
compulsory. Before that, the concept of a formal education was not so widespread. Children learned the
skills they would need for adult life at home from tutors or their parents, through formal instruction or by
working side by side with the adults of the family.
In the modern developed world, where the vast majority of children attend school, families choose
homeschooling for a variety of reasons. For people who live in remote areas, such as the Australian outback
or the Alaskan Wilderness, homeschooling may be their only option. Children who have exceptional talents
in the arts or other areas may be homeschooled so that they have more time to devote to their special
interests. Much of the homeschooling movement is made up of families who, for various reasons, are
dissatisfied with the schools available to them. They may have a differing educational philosophy, they may
be concerned about the safety of the school environment, or they may feel that the local schools cannot
adequately address their children's educational needs. Although most families continue to choose a
traditional classroom education for their children, homeschooling as an alternative educational option is
becoming more popular.
