if the statements are true (T) or false (F). Track 01
Alam: Hello Jack, how are you?
Jack: I am fine. Thank you, and you?
Alam: I am also fine. Why are you late? What were you doing?
Jack: I am sorry for being late. I was watching my favourite TV programme.
Alam: What is your favourite TV programme?
Jack: My favourite TV programme is CID.
Alam: CID on Sony TV?

Jack: Yes, you are right.
Alam: | also like CID very much.

Jack: That’s great. Why do you like that?

Alam: The programme is very thrilling. And it makes us curious to know what happens next,

Jack: We can also learn many things about detective investigation.
Alam: You are right. Don’t you like any other program?
Jack: Yes, I also like Science.

Task 2:

Listen and fill in the gap with no more than three words. Track 02

Are you good at sport? I’m not, but I love watching and playing all kinds of sport. My favourite
sport is football — the kind with the round ball, not American football. I wasn’t very good at

football when I was a kid. This did not stop me playing. I played in the park with my friends for
hours every day. What is your national sport? Do you like it? I love Japan’s national sport sumo.

It is one of the most exciting sports in the world. You have to spend a little time getting to know
the rules and the fighters, The greatest thing about sport is that it brings people together from all
over the world. Another good thing is that it keeps us healthy. Sports stars are very lucky. They
love their job and stay fit by doing it every day. What are you going to play next?

with them. We visited Time Square, Statue of Liberty and some our relatives.
Conversation 4:

Lee: Where did you go yesterday?
John: Yesterday, I visited Merlion Park and traveled on a hop on hop off bus for sightseeing.

Lee: What about the food?
John: The food is ....
Task 2:

John is talking about reality TV. Listen carefully then choose the correct answer A or B.

Track 04
I don’t get the point of reality TV. First of all, it isn’t real, so I don’t know why they call it reality TV.
How can it be real when there are TV cameras everywhere? People don’t act in the same way when there are
cameras around. I think it’s the very worst type of television show. It’s all about celebrity and me, me, me.

The people who appear in reality TV shows have no talent. There is nothing you can learn from these shows.
TV companies must be really short of ideas, or money. I can’t think of a bigger waste of time than looking
at a group of people in a room together, and seeing how they get on or don’t get on. I’m amazed they are so
popular. Perhaps I’m missing something. If you know what the attraction is, tell me.

is talking about TV. Listen carefully then complete the table below. Track 10

Is television good or bad? I loved it when I was a kid. My eyes were glued to the TV screen for hours
and hours. I watched cartoons and other kids’ shows non-stop. It was good at the time, but maybe I

should have been outside playing or doing something more useful. There’s a lot of rubbish on TV. There

are so many programmes that you watch just because you’re too lazy to do something useful. A lot of

people turn on the TV and sit in front of it all day or all night. What a waste of time! I think television

programmes are getting worse. Reality TV and celebrity chat shows are the worst. The only good things
on TV nowadays is the news, live sport and comedy shows. Plus an interesting documentary or two.

1:

Listen to a record about Albert Park and decide if the statements are true (T) or false (F).

Track 13

Albert Park is located only three kilometres from the Melbourne city centre. It is a 225-hectare
sporting and recreational park.

The park is a beautiful, relaxing, and fun place to spend the day. You can enjoy a picnic or barbecue
at one of the nine picnic areas. There is also a large lake which is home to a gorgeous family of swans
and is a lovely place to take a walk. If you are more adventurous, you can take some lessons at the yacht
and rowing club or hire a boat just for fun and go for a paddle.
Task 2:

Listen to Mark and Andy talking about life in the future then choose the correct answer

A, B, C or D. Track 14
Andy: What do you think about life in the future, Mark?

Mark: Oh, I think life in the future will be better than it is today. People will be able to live in a cleaner
environment, breathe fresher air and eat healthier food.

Andy: Will we have robots?
Mark: Yes, robots will be able to do most of the work in factories and they will be able to do all
dangerous things for us. They will be able to interact with people and do everything for us at home.

Andy: What about the traffic system?
Mark: More people will be able to work from home on computers so there won’t be any traffic jams.
Cars will be with us but they will be able to run on solar energy instead of petrol.
Andy: Wow, that’s a better life!

I love playing sports. I’m learning basketball now and that’s great because I know all the players —

they’re really nice.
I also play tennis with my friends. I’m really good at that. It’s the sport I like best. And I can swim
well. That’s a lot of fun too. But I don’t have much time to do it now.
There’s a great sports center in the city. I can catch a bus there. It stops across from the library and

the sports centre is behind that, before you get to the University.
I have lessons at the city sports center every Tuesday evening. I arrive early for my tennis lesson.

It starts at 6 but I get to the sports center just after 5.30. After that I practise basketball and I go home
after 7.30.

My brother loves mountains. He says I should go climbing with him one day. We also talked about
riding horses but I really want to try sailing and then I can buy a boat!

In Tokyo, Japan, there is a see-through house. It is like a normal Japanese house but all the walls

are made of glass. There is plenty of daylight but no privacy. Architect Sou Fujimoto designed it for a
couple to make their home. He based his ideas on the early man living in trees. It wouldn't suit everyone

but the couple who live there love the feeling of being surrounded by the natural world.
Task 2:

Listen to a talk about television then choose the correct answer A, B, C or D. Track 22

Watching television is an interesting and fun activity. The first television broadcast in Australia
was in 1956. Back then, the pictures on a TV were black and white only. Television has changed a
lot since then.
There are several channels and they show different TV programmes. In Western Australia, the main
channels are ABC, Seven, Nine, Ten, and SBS. TV guides tell us what programmes are showing on
which channel, and at what time on a day.
Many programmes on television are episodes. They are part of a series. These episodes usually last
for either 30 minutes or a full hour. At the weekend there are interesting films. You can watch them

instead of going to the cinema.
