Modern life is characterized not only by the conveniences made possible by technological
advances but also by greater mobility in search of still greater opportunities. These major life
changes, however, expose individuals to many novelties in a new culture, which are the causes of
culture shock. Culture shock is a process through which most people who enter a new culture pass
through before they adjust to life in their new environment.

Culture shock begins with the “honeymoon stage”. This is the period of time when we
first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. Unfortunately, the
second stage “rejection stage” can be quite dangerous because the visitor may develop unhealthy
habits (smoking and drinking). This can lead to the person getting sick or developing skin
infections or rashes, which then makes the person feel even more scared and confused and
helpless. This stage is considered a crisis in the process of cultural adjustment and many people
choose to go back to their homeland or spend all their time with people from their own culture

speaking their native language. The third stage of culture shock is called the “adjustment stage”.
This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture. You are becoming
stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place. The fourth stage can be called “at
ease at last”. Now you feel quite comfortable in your new surroundings. You can cope with most
problems that occur. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong
enough to deal with them. The last stage of culture shock, which many people don’t know about,
is called “reverse culture shock”. Surprisingly, this occurs when you go back to your native culture
and find that you have changed and that things there have changed while you have been away.
Now you feel a little uncomfortable back home. Life is a struggle!

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions

In the West, cartoons are used chiefly to make people laugh. The important feature of all

these cartoons is the joke and the element of surprise which is contained. Even though it is very
funny, a good cartoon is always based on close observation of a particular feature of life and usually
has a serious purpose.

Cartoons in the West have been associated with political and social matters for many years.
In wartime, for example, they proved to be an excellent way of spreading propaganda. Nowadays
cartoons are often used to make short, sharp comments on politics and governments as well as on a
variety of social matters. In this way, the modern cartoon has become a very powerful force in
influencing people in Europe and the United States.

7

Unlike most American and European cartoons, however, many Chinese cartoon drawings

in the past have also attempted to educate people, especially those who could not read and write.

Such cartoons about the lives and sayings of great men in China have proved extremely useful in

bringing education to illiterate and semi-literate people throughout China. Confucius, Mencius and

Laozi have all appeared in very interesting stories presented in the form of cartoons. The cartoons

themselves have thus served to illustrate the teachings of the Chinese sages in a very attractive way.

In this sense, many Chinese cartoons are different from Western cartoons in so far as they

do not depend chiefly on telling jokes. Often, there is nothing to laugh at when you see Chines

cartoons. This is not their primary aim. In addition to commenting on serious political and social

matters, Chinese cartoons have aimed at spreading the traditional Chinese thoughts and culture as

widely as possible among the people.

Today, howerver, Chinese cartoons have an added part to play in spreading knowledge.

They offer a very attractive and useful way of reaching people throughout the world, regardless of

the particular country in which they live. Thus, through cartoons, the thoughts and teachings of the

old Chinese philosophers and sages can now reach people who live in such countries as Britain,

France, America, Japan, Malaysia or Australia and who are unfamiliar with the Chinese culture.

Until recently, the transfer of knowledge and culture has been overwhelmingly from the

West to the East and not vice versa. By means of cartoons, however, publishing companies in

Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore are now having success in correcting this imbalance between

the East and the West.

Cartoons can overcome language barriers in all foreign countries. The vast increase in the

popularity of these cartoons serves to illustrate the truth of Confucius’s famous saying “One picture

is worth a thousand words.”

34. Which of the following clearly characterizes Western cartoons?

A. Originality, freshness, and astonishment.

B. Humour, unexpectedness, and criticism.

C. Enjoyment, liveliness, and carefulness.

D. Seriousness, propagande, and attractiveness.

A. purposes B. nationalities C. values D. styles

8

B. an opinion about how cartoons entertain people
C. a description of cartoons of all kinds the world over

38. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage?

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the

correct answer to each of the questions

In today's competitive world, what responsible parent would not want to give their

children the best possible start in life? For this reason, many parents want their children, often as

young as ten months old, to become familiar with computers. They seem to think that if their

children grow up with computers, they will be better equipped to face the challenges of the future.

No one has proved that computers make children more creative or more intelligent. The truth may

even be the opposite. Educational psychologists claim that too much exposure to computers,

especially for the very young, may negatively affect normal brain development. Children gain

valuable experience of the world from their interaction with physical objects. Ten-month-old babies

may benefit more from bumping their heads or putting various objects in their mouths than they

will from staring at eye-catching cartoons. A four-year-old child can improve hand-eye coordination

and understand cause and effect better by experimenting with a crayon than by moving a cursor

around a computer screen. So, as educational psychologists suggest, instead of government funding

going to more and more computer classes, it might be better to devote resources to music and art

programs. It is ludicrous to think that children will fall behind if they are not exposed to computers

from an early age. Time is too precious to spend with a "mouse". Now is the time when they should

be out there learning to ride a bike. There will be time later on for them to start banging away at

keyboards.

29. What would be an appropriate title for this passage?

A. Let kids be kids B. Computers in schools

C. Never too early to start D. More computers mean brighter future

D. tend to like music and art more than those who do not

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions

Most parents want their sons and daughters to have equal chances of success when they
grow up. Today, equality of the sexes is largely mandated by public policy and law. However, old-
fashioned ideas and a lot of prejudice are still part of our culture and present challenging questions
for parents.

Gender stereotypes are rigid ideas about how boys and girls should behave. We all know
what these stereotypes are: A "feminine" girls should be insecure, accommodating and a little
illogical in her thinking. A "masculine" boy should be strong, unemotional, aggressive, and
competitive. How are children exposed to these stereotypes? According to the researchers David
and Myra Sadker of the American University of Washington, D.C., boys and girls are often treated
differently in the classroom. They found out that when boys speak, teachers usually offer
constructive comments, when girls speech, teachers tend to focus on the behavior. It's more
important how the girls act rather than what they say.

The emphasis on differences begins at birth and continues throughout childhood. For
example, few people would give pink baby's clothes to a boy or a blue blanket to a girl. Later, many
of us give girls dolls and miniature kitchenware, while boys receive action figures and construction
sets. There's nothing wrong with that. The problem arises when certain activities are deemed
appropriate for one sex but not the other. According to Heather J. Nicholson, Ph.D., director of the

16

National Resource Center for Girls, Inc., this kind of practice prevents boys and girls from acquiring
important skills for their future lives.

"The fact is," says Nicholson, "that society functions as a kind of sorting machine regarding

gender. In a recent survey, fifty-eight percent of eighth-grade girls but only six percent of boys
earned money caring for younger children. On the other hand, twenty-seven percent of boys but
only three percent of girls earned money doing lawn work". If we are serious about educating a
generation to be good workers and parents, we need to eliminate such stereotypes as those
mentioned previously.

Gender stereotypes inevitably are passed to our children. However, by becoming aware
of the messages our children receive, we can help them develop ways to overcome these incorrect
ideas. To counteract these ideas, parents can look for ways to challenge and support their children,
and to encourage confidence in ways that go beyond what society's fixed ideas about differences of
sext are.
