Speaker3 (00:01):
Janet, you sound so down in the dumps.

Speaker3 (01:07):

Ex2: Answer the questions

Speaker4 (00:00):

Good evening. This is Madeline Carter with family life on tonight's program We're going to be talking about
competition in sports Should children play sports to win or just play for fun and enjoyment? What do you
think collar number one you are on the air? I?

Speaker2 (00:22):

Think children should just play sports for fun Competition brings out the worst in people and it's a pity for
children to be exposed to this I think kids should be encouraged to be cooperative not competitive. They
shouldn't have to prove themselves all the time They shouldn't have to be the best their childhood is short
enough as it is They'll have plenty of time to compete in their adult lives

Speaker3 (00:44):

Okay, next caller. I disagree with what the last caller said Let me be frank life is all about competition and
kids need to learn how to compete early on So they'll be prepared for the real world It's a very important
part of a child's development besides if we never let our children experience failure They will never really
know how good it feels to succeed is there anything you'd like to respond to collar number one?

Speaker2 (01:14):

Yes, as our children grow up. They'll learn how to compete in life They don't need a head start, but if we are
going to expose our children to competition We should at least do it in the right way For example, we need
to teach them how to lose a competition without losing their tempers and it's not about being the best But
about doing their best

Ex3: Answer the questions
Speaker2 (00:00):
Hello, this is George Mataya. We're here with Dr. Lee Crosby to talk about the planet Mars. Welcome, Dr.
Crosby. Hello, George. I'm happy to be here. Let's start with some facts. Earth is the third planet from the
Sun, and Mars is the fourth, right? Correct.
Speaker3 (00:20):
Mars is about half the size of Earth, but both planets have the same land area.
Speaker2 (00:26):
If Mars is half the size of Earth, how can both planets have the same land area?
Speaker3 (00:32):
Much of Earth is covered by oceans, but Mars doesn't have any oceans. It does have two moons, though,
called Phobos and Deimos. Interesting.
Speaker2 (00:42):
What else can you tell us about Mars?
Speaker3 (00:45):
Well, a year on Mars is about twice as long as a year on Earth, because Mars takes 687 Earth days to orbit
the Sun. Do you think people will ever visit Mars? Definitely. The first unmanned spacecraft landed on Mars
in the 1970s. NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, predicts that humans will reach
Mars by the year 2040.
Speaker2 (01:10):
I guess 2040 isn't too long to wait. How long will the flight to Mars take?
Speaker3 (01:16):
With current technology, it's estimated that a manned spacecraft will get to Mars in about 240 days. That
means a trip to Mars will take about eight months. But once the spacecraft arrives, the astronauts will have
to deal with survival on a very unfriendly planet. This is fascinating.

From: To: Subject: Please Advise
Dear Career Counselor,

I am writing to you about an upsetting turn of events at my workplace, and I hope you will be
able to advise me as to the best course of action.

I have been an accounts executive at the same company for twenty-five years. I came to the
company straight out of college and have been happy and successful here. I have always been
ambitious and done well at my job. I love the challenge of the business world and have a lot to
contribute to it. My boss has always been happy with my work.

My colleagues and I are worried, however, about the job security of older business
professionals such as ourselves. It appears that many university graduates want a career in
business. The young graduates are eager to please because they view the business world as
challenging and glamorous. They are therefore willing to work for much lower salaries. These
graduates are a problem for older professionals, and we can't compete with them.

I have just heard that my company has hired ten new account executives straight out of
college. I'm very worried that I'm going to get fired. I have several friends who have recently
been told by their companies that they are not needed anymore. Like me, these people are in
their forties and fifties and have families to support. At our age it isn't easy to find another
job.

I was wondering if I should speak to my boss and express my concerns, or keep quiet and
hope for the best, so as not to draw attention to myself.

Any advice you can give on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Shirley Marks

New Animal Shelter Opens

by Edward Land

A new animal shelter opened yesterday in the Highview neighborhood. The shelter was built
nearly five years ago, but could not open because there was not enough money to cover
expenses.

"Thanks to the generous donations we received from the public," said Ellen Summers, the
manager of the shelter, "we have been able to open the shelter at last. It's been a long and
difficult process."

At the opening ceremony the city mayor encouraged the public to support the new shelter.
"We are proud of our record in animal care in this town. Highview Shelter will reinforce our
public profile and put our town on the map."

Highview Shelter will be able to offer shelter to two hundred homeless dogs and cats. In
addition to the areas for dogs and cats, there is a special area for rabbits and other small

animals, and even a field for horses and donkeys. The shelter offers many services, including
taking care of pets while owners are on vacation, a clinic where sick pets can receive
treatment, and a program for high school students that teaches about animal care.

Highview Shelter is still very much dependent on public support. "At the moment we can cover
our expenses, but that won't last long. We still need the public to make donations," said
Summers. "And, of course, anybody who wants a pet should come to us first. We have lots of

Ex3: Answer the questions

Smart Robots

Samantha Chung

Consider this quote by the world-famous physicist Stephen Hawking: "The development of full
artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race." Science fiction novelists and

movie writers seem to agree. For many years, their books and films have fascinated us with

the threat of intelligent robots and computers taking over the world. We have been taught to
be fearful and suspicious of artificially intelligent machines. But should we?

Human errors cause many deaths during surgery each year and might even be one of the
leading causes of death. Some surgeons think that AI robots could be a solution. Presently,
robots perform surgical tasks, but a human surgeon controls their mechanical arms. However,
AI robotic surgeons are being developed to work with human doctors with the goal of
eliminating human error from surgery and improving accuracy. Perhaps one day, robots will
perform surgeries solo, completely eliminating the need for human doctors.

Another area where human participation may be on the way out is in the driver's seat. Google
and Tesla are just two of the companies working hard to develop self-driving cars which will
"learn" how to drive through experience. It probably won't be long before you can sit in the
backseat sipping coffee and reading your e-mails while your driverless car takes you to work.

Have you ever been asked by your bank whether you made a particular credit card purchase?
AI technology is used by many credit card companies to identify stolen credit card use. Using a
card-holder's buying history, AI technology evaluates huge quantities of data in order to
recognize patterns and red-flag purchases that seem unusual. Then, the credit card company
is alerted to possible theft. Of course, a real human employee contacts the card-holder to
verify the purchase, but the background work is done with AI help.

our daily lives, and their importance will continue to grow in the future. Will we be able to
