Myfirst piece of advice to people who want to start getting fit isdon'tbuy an exercise bike. Typically, people who buy them use them fora week or so and then forget about them. They areeffective if they are used regularlybut you needtobe determined. Most people will find it much easier togo for a gentle jog around the park.

As well as being easy todo, jogging is also relativelycheap compared to most other sports. You don't need to buy expensiveclothes if you'rejust going running aroundthe parkor onthe beach. The mainthing is that they're comfortable, and that they keep you warm in the winter andcool in the summer. There is one piece of equipment, however, that you will have to spend time and money on, and that'syourrunningshoes.Remember that you are not looking for a fashion item, but for somethingthatwillsupportyour feet and protect you from

injury. They can be expensive, but if they are good quality, they will last you along time. It's always best to get expert advice, and the best place for that is a sports shop.

As for the actual jogging, the secretis to startgently, and not to do too much at the beginning - especiallyif you haven't had anyexercise for a long time. Try a mixtureof walking and running forten minutes about three times a week at first. Once youare happy doing thatyou can then start to increasethe amount you do gradually. After a few monthsyou shouldhopetobe able to run at a reasonable speed for twenty minutes threeor four times a week. It's importantthat you feel comfortable with whatever you do. If you do, you'll start to enjoy it and will probably keep doing it. Ifitmakes you feel uncomfortable, you'll probably stop after a short time andreturn to your bad habits. Inany case, trainingtoo hard is not very effective. Research has shown thatsomebodywho exercise for twice aslongortwice as hardasanother person doesn't automatically become twice as fit.

You can do a few things to make homework less stressful. First, be sure you understand the assignment. Write it down in your notebook or day planner if you need to, and don't be afraid to ask questions aboutwhat is expected. It is much easier to take a minuteto ask the teacher during or after class than to struggle to remember later that night! If you want, you can also ask how long the particular homework assignment should take to complete so you can planyour time.

Trang 34

Second, use any extra time you have in school to work on your homework. Many schools have libraries that are specifically designed to allow studentsto study or get homework done. The moreworkyou can get done in school, theless you will have to do that night.

Third, paceyourself. If you don't finish your homework during school, think about how much you have left and what else is going on that day, and then plan your time. Most middlestudents should have between 1 and 3 hoursof homeworka night. Ifit is aheavy homework day, you willneed to devote more time to homework.

Noone is expected to understandeverything, andmaybe you needsome help. The first place to turn for helpisyourteacher. But what if you don't feel comfortable withyour teacher? If you arein a big enough school, there may be other teachers who teach the same subject. Speak to other teachers directly and you may be in luck. Sometimes itjust helps tohave someone explain something ina different way. Moreover, you might also be able to get some help from anotherstudent. Ifthere is someone you like who is a good student, think about askingthat person if you can study together.
