- The difference between the poor and the rich in New York during the Covid-19 pandemic.
- Racism is becoming more and more serious in times of happening deadly viruses. - The way people who have bad conditions make a living day after day and how
well-off people adapted and maintain their luxurious lives despite the difficult shifts in a pandemic.
- Some of the rich people help and sympathize with the hardship of the lack of poor people such as the homeless, children, and lost jobs due to the long pandemic.
1.2.Details to main ideas
- Idea number one:
+ The lower classes as Kevin, and Emerita suffered from the most difficult period in their lives when the virus started to affect all the aspects of the world. Under the lockdown to protect people’s health, they lost their job, have no enough money to care for themselves as well as their family.
+ On the opposite side in New York, the upper line has a sufficient and luxurious life, no worry about money or what difficulties the pandemic brought about.
- Idea number two:
+ Health becomes a luxury to poor people, especially, the poor, black people. + The death of George Floyd in Minneapolis (a black man is dead in the street by white polices) is an obvious example of the serious situation of racism in New York.
+ Other people protesting some kind of action said that combine the Covid virus with the virus of racist cops, we have an explosion.
- Idea number three:
1

Trang 4
+ As Kevin, before the pandemic took place all around the world, he is an actor and singer. He spent about six years in a theater dressing up as a woman and performing in front of a lot of people and now, he made ends meet by singing in a church through the internet. Besides, he acts as a comedy actor for people when he’s at home.
+ The Bickley family, is a rich family living in a wide and beautiful house in the Hamptons. Mr. Bickley’s at home and took his dog to the park per day, while his two daughters have a job as an influencer and content creator. They have an influence on some social media, despite only staying at home, they still earn their money and have a sufficient life without worrying about money or pandemic.
- Idea number three:
Some well-off families as the Bickley knew exactly that how the Covid-19 had affected to people’s life in general, and in the life of New York’s residents. People have become unemployed, students have no chance to study in person but many of them do not have computers or smartphone because their parent do not have enough money, etc. That’s why they volunteer for people getting into trouble during the pandemic and share with them.
1.3.Transcribe a part of video
- From 39:05 to 42:05
- The time doing this practice: 34 minutes
Her ambition is to finally get out of the Bronx. The Bickley are meeting for dinner. It’s not long til the presidential election, it’s a topic they prefer to avoid discussing to some of their friends. We don’t talk about politics [laugh] that’s I’m saying. You know, there’re a lot of closet republicans. The effect of the pandemic has made the Bickley reflect. Sophie has her doubts now about the world of influencers. It makes me wanna go where I can go to “….” kids that can’t be tutored or don’t have laptops or don’t have parents who can educate them. It makes me want to do really do more.
I think the gap between the poor and the rich and “….”even the middle, the middle is “…” huge margin, but it has become too large and people are suffering. That’s what I think the
2

Trang 5
president has to really work on. The pandemic has had “…..”, in my opinion “….” it even more to “…” but the underlying issues “…” there before.
Popcorn for the “…” debate between Biden and Trump. Kevin is concerned about the election and the future of it come true. I am one of the people whose “...” will be affected directly by the choices that are made in our country. I don’t have cushion. I’m an artist. You know, I don’t have trust “…” of my family. I’m an artist, black man, queer man, you know. And so these kind of decisions can affect me seriously, you know.
Despite the “…”, Kevin Smith Kirkwood has “…” his big debut. But the “…” way remains closed for now. Financially, Emerita Ramoon is at “…” – bottom, but remains optimistic. The Bickley family has gained a new “…” on the city, and life.
Three lives, three worlds, one city. The contrast existed longer before the pandemic, but the coronavirus has “…” and “…” the gaping “…” in society. Not just in New York, exposed as “…” of inequality, but also across the whole country. A challenge facing the United State – and “…” new president.

3.PART 3: Identification of areas for improvement
- Factor number one: Having a poor range of vocabulary words Example:
11

Trang 14
+ So how do society's more privileged members deal with social injustice during a deadly pandemic? (Have some new words I do not know their pronunciation) + It is because we have had years of tax cuts, loopholes and lax prosecution of tax fraud.
- Factor number two: Do not know the linking sound in speaking Example:
+ It’s scary not knowing when there is an end in sight.
+ Coinciding with the end of lockdown, anger spills over.
- Factor number three: Be distracted from many things (do not concentrate)
- Factor number four: Time for listening practice is not enough
Example: The contrast existed long before the pandemic, but the coronavirus has amplified it, and cemented the gaping division in society. (after three times I can hear and write down this sentence)
- Factor number five: Fast speed of speakers
Example: It makes me wanna go where I can go tutor kids that can’t be tutored or don’t have laptops or don’t have parents who can help educate them. It makes me want do really do more. (I have to speed down when I listen to this sentence
TASK 2: THREE – MONTH SELF-STUDY PLAN-Measureable goals:
+ Level up to 6.5 IELTS LISTENING
+ Try to keep listening habit daily to expand not only listening skill but also speaking skill and vocabulary range

Trang 15
minutes per day

Trang 17
-Ways to measure my progress
+ By taking the online tests on some common websites (study4, IELTS online test, YouTube, etc.)
+ Participating in some challenges on Facebook and trying to finish the test + Through some tests that teachers gave me
-Listening techniques, I use
+ Note-taking: I will choose a short video/recording (3-4 minutes) and then I
listen to it carefully, using a pen to write down all the things I have heard by some signal, or symbol to catch as much information as I can. Besides, I can follow the book I have instead of finding them by myself.
+ Dictation: Listening to a recording, after each sentence of the speaker, pause it
and write the full information speaker said. If I do not hear clearly, repeat it and listen.
+ Watch a lot of short videos on social media in English with my favoritetopics: I love Taylor Swift, and some well-known people in the US&UK, I try to
watch their music videos, films, and interviews to understand them more. The first time, I just listen comfortably, and then I turn on the English subtitle to mix between listening and reading. Finally, I use Vietnamese subtitles and find the meaning of each new word in the video.
15

Trang 18
+ Listening and repeat it after some days: If I hear a video (a long video), I will divide it into some short parts from 3 to 4 minutes and watch it every day. On the first day, I listen to a part of the video, afterwards, I listen to the old part and the new part tomorrow and then carry on with the rest.
-Tips for maintaining motivation:
+ After each good result I get; I will give myself a little gift to maintain my enthusiasm for learning
+ Practicing whenever I feel comfortable and ready for it. Do not cramp a lot of knowledge or force me to listen when I’m exhausted
+ Watching motivating videos to push me more every day
+ I think about my idol, my celebrities, and try to understand what they said, what they sing. Besides, I try my best to maintain my persistence like them to get through all hardships.
