<b>ABSTRACT </b>

This study emphasizes the importance of incorporating a new learning technique into learning in pronunciation practice class, which will help students become more interested in learning, particularly self-study.

The goal of this study is to gain knowledge of how far the shadowing technique can help improve pronunciation for English-majored sophomores (from the participants' perspectives) at Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City (IUH). Data was collected from 70 participants through observation, questionnaires, and interviews.

The researcher designed the study as a homework assignment, that students need to shadowing 10 videos within 10 weeks. This technique, according to the study's findings, can help students improve their pronunciation, particularly intonation. As a result, up to 70% of students expressed extreme satisfaction with this shadowing technique. Furthermore, when asked if this technique should be used more widely in the teaching and learning process at IUH, 94% of students agreed. Keywords: English-majored sophomores, IUH, pronunciation, shadowing technique.

<b>1.1 RATIONALE </b>

Pronunciation is a crucial aspect of speaking and it influences the meaning of an utterance (Aprianoto & Haerazi, 2019). Indeed, clear pronunciation allows speakers to be confident when sharing ideas and opinions with others (Zaigham, 2011). Nonetheless, having a standard pronunciation is not always easy for everyone, especially for EFL students; hence, it appears that teaching pronunciation is consistently focused on by teachers.

According to Goodwin (2001), teaching pronunciation has three goals: the first is to allow students to comprehend, the second is to improve students' confidence in speaking, and the third is to assist learners in monitoring their way of speaking based on environmental input.

However, when looking at the traditional classroom, it can be seen that knowledge is rather heavy on theory; learning time is sometimes tiresome dues to passively absorbing knowledge; and students, in particular, have few opportunities to practice on their own. This is also true in pronunciation practice classes, where teachers explain almost the fundamentals of pronunciation before allowing students to practice.

Take pronunciation practice classes in 2020 and 2021 at the Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh city as illustrations. The pupils in these classes are stretching from 40 to 45 students; with such many students, teachers are unable to approach and correct the mistakes of each student individually. Moreover, class time practice is obviously insufficient because the class time is only 60 periods to cover 52 lessons from the coursebook. Therefore, if students want to perfect pronunciation, they need to spend more time practicing outside of class.

This raises the question of whether there is a technique of learning pronunciation that is both effective, enjoyable as well as allowing students to devote more time to practice. As a result, the shadowing method is discovered. To further clarify whether this learning method is truly appropriate for students, the author conducted research: “The impact of using shadowing technique to improve pronunciation - from the English-majored sophomores’ perspectives”.

The researcher aims for 4 outcomes as below.

The study's initial goal is to emphasize the significance of pronunciation, particularly in the English speaking and communication.

The second goal is to introduce a new learning pronunciation technique (shadowing), to English learners in order to enhance pronunciation abilities.

Furthermore, the researcher wants to know if shadowing can help students improve their pronunciation.

The final goal is to obtain students' perspectives on the shadowing technique when it is in use. Then, speculate on better approaches to teaching and learning pronunciation.

<b>English-1.4 SCOPES OF THE STUDY </b>

Even though this study took the researcher a considerable amount of time and effort, objective influences stills had an impact on. They are as follows:

Since the researcher is merely a fourth-year student, an intensive experiment or a direct assessment of student improvement is difficult to conduct. Moreover, the researcher cannot administer the study methodically (set 2 groups apart, one is a controlled group where the shadowing method is used, whereas the other group does not). Because of these constraints, the researcher is supposed to do research in just a group of students, then solicit students’ viewpoints.

The key aspect of speaking is pronunciation. Therefore, its definitions have been proposed by several researchers. Here are some perspectives:

Cook (1996) defined pronunciation as the production of English sounds (as cited in Pourhosein Gilakjani, 2016). Likewise, according to Yates (2002 as cited in Pourhosein Gialkjani, 2016), pronunciation is known as the sound production to convey meaning. Going into more details, pronunciation is described as a way to speak a word, in particular one widely acknowledged or understood, according to Otlowski's (1998) research.

Taking into account all of the definitions provided above, it is possible to conclude that pronunciation is the sound production of a language that conveys meaning and is generally acknowledged.

<b>2.1.2 The definition of the shadowing technique </b>

Shadowing is a pronunciation technique utilized extensively for many years; thus, numerous definitions were born to define it. At first, shadowing was originally used to train interpreters. Nonetheless, in the current decades, it has been introduced in teaching for EFL learners. According to Tami (1997), the shadowing technique is more than just a passive practice in which students track the heard speech and vocalize it as clearly as possible while also listening. To add to the definitions, Luster (2005, as cited in Hamzar, 2014) stated in one of his research papers that "shadowing" involves repeating what speakers say and is also an excellent way to teach English. He also provided a few shadowing descriptions:

• Shadowing is not listening and repeating.

• Shadowing is not listening while you are reading. • Shadowing is not memorizing and then shadowing.

Because shadowing and dubbing are sometimes used interchangeably in Vietnamese, it is critical to distinguish between the two concepts.

If the shadowing technique can be defined as the prompt process of verbal expression repetition, while repeating is a task (Shiota, 2012), dubbing means “replacing the original track of a film’s (or any audiovisual text’s) source language dialogues with another track on which translated dialogues have been recorded in the target language” (Chaume, 2012).

When you watch a video, for example, and you begin to imitate the speaker's speech, you are practicing shadowing. Dubbing, however, the original language of the film will be removed and translated into the audience language.

From the definitions and illustrations above, the reader can distinguish differences between shadowing and dubbing.

Learning styles play a vital role in an individual having an effective learning life (Ozerem & Akkoyunlu, 2015). According to (Learning-styles-online.com, 2021), there are seven learning styles, those can be seen as hereafter:

<b>2.6 THE PREVIOUS STUDIES </b>

In Foote and McDonough's study "Using shadowing with mobile technology to improve L2 pronunciation" in 2017. Over the course of eight weeks, 16 participants used iPods to practice shadowing for a short conversation. Hence, in all aspects of their speaking skills, the results of this study showed the participants improved (Foote & Mc Donough, 2017).

In “Enhancing the Students’ Pronunciation using Shadowing technique at Senior High School Students” research. In this study, 70 students were chosen randomly at the senior high school and assigned to two groups: experimental or control class. shadowing technique is an excellent approach for teachers to use in the classroom (Salim, Terasne, & Narasima, 2020).

The goal of the study “The effect of Shadowing on EFL learners’ oral performance in terms of fluency” was to see if there was a relation between shadowing and the fluency of EFL learners' oral performance. For a month, forty Intermediate level students participated in the study as either an experimental or control group. The result showed that there was a strong link discovered between shadowing and the fluency of learners' L2 production. (Zakeri, 2014).

<b>3.1 RESEARCH SITE </b>

This study is being carried out at the IUH's Faculty of Foreign Languages of Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City. Without a doubt, this is a venue that fits this thesis. Indeed, the university provided sufficient means and tools to assist me in completing my thesis successfully. Further, IUH is quite close to my accommodation, which is very convenient for observing and learning more about student psychology. The Faculty of Foreign Languages is an appropriate location for me because the participants are affiliated with this Faculty, which will help me successfully complete this thesis.

<b>3.2 PARTICIPANTS </b>

Students from the DHAV15 classes, or, English-majored sophomores from the Faculty of Foreign Languages (FFL) of the Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City (IUH), are taking part in this topic. Hereafters are 2 reasons explain why these students are chosen:

Firstly, these sophomores had already finished the pronunciation practice course and were familiar with the tricky aspects of the course. Furthermore, when enrolling in the course, students have opted for their best approach learning styles in improving their pronunciation.

<b>3.3 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY AND RESEARCH METHODS </b>

<b>3.3.1 Research methodology </b>

The most effective strategy for completing this thesis is to combine quantitative and qualitative methodologies. As the researcher can get a quick collective view using the quantitative method alone, however, we cannot witness students' improving process – a crucial step. As a result, the qualitative method will aid and complement the quantitative method in gaining a more in-depth understanding of students' opinions.

<b>3.3.2 Research methods </b>

For this study, the researcher employed a questionnaire and an observation method.

It is no longer contentious to state that the questionnaire is very quick to install and captures a great amount of data, in addition to being simple to analyze.

The observation method has been greatly beneficial. Through observation, the author gains a better understanding of students' pronunciation abilities. However, the author does not analyze it; rather, she wants to know whether or not this method has been applied correctly at this language level. Furthermore, by observing through the Flipgrid, the author was aware of the difficulties that students face as a result of observation via Flipgrid. For example, when there are a large of students who were unable to submit their work, submitted very little, or submitting too many videos for a single post.

The final method is conducting the interview method to learn more about students’ perspectives of this shadowing technique.

At this point, the researcher begins to read through and take notes about some topic-related papers. At this procedure, moreover, the instruction directed the researcher to use the Flipgrid platform, which allows observing the students' practice from a distance.

Following that, the researcher carefully selected 10 videos from the VOA Learning English: Let's Learn English series for practicing.

After gathering the essentials, the researcher realized that she would need the assistance of her supervisor to instruct the participants in using the shadowing technique as well as training them how to upload videos to Flipgrid.

The researcher would then upload the ten videos in turn, conducting observations and comments to encourage students in continuing their work.

VOA Learning English Chanel - Let's Learn English Level 2 is designed for intermediate English learners by Certified American English teachers. The course includes teaching in speaking, vocabulary, and writing.

These videos mentioned are about business, behavioral science, developmental psychology, fine arts, and nutrition. And these are the same topics covered in Speaking 3.

<b>3.4.2 Stage 2: Operation </b>

At this time, the research will begin, with students uploading one video to Flipgrid each week until the tenth film is submitted. However, 10 videos are divided into two sections. The first segment consists of five one-minute videos that assist students to get acquainted with it. Following that, the next five videos are each 5 minutes long and allow students to obtain more practice with the shadowing technique.

<b>4.1 FINDINGS </b>

Following the implementation of the observation, questionnaire, and interview methods, the researcher will analyze the acquired data and provide comments. The researcher conducts data analysis with two main methods: questionnaire and interview.

The two pie charts 4.1 depicts how long participants have been studying English. Overall, more than 94 percent of students believe they have studied English for more than 5 years. Besides that, as can be seen in the graph 4.2, the majority of students enrolled in speaking 3 class are mostly second-year students (DHAV15), accounting for roughly three-quarters of the total. While the remainder of the graph represents the percentage of third-year students (DHAV14).

As a result, the proportion of second-year students remains the highest, and they have studied English for at least 5 years.

Charts 4.3 and 4.4 illustrate the students’ favorite in four English language skills. As seen in chart 4.3, students preferred the most with the speaking skills (nearly a half). Meanwhile, around 40% of participants opt writing and listening skills for their least favorite, as can be seen in chart 4.4. Thus, students are very interested in learning speaking skills among 4 English skills.

Pie charts 4.8 and 4.9 show the importance of pronunciation in communication as well as the frequency of students’ self-practicing. According to chart 4.8, nearly one hundred percent of students believe that pronunciation is an important or extremely important factor. As a result, graph 4.9 shows that more than two-thirds of students practice pronunciation on occasion; notwithstanding, a quarter of students practice this aspect frequently. In short, students also spend more time practicing this skill on their own when they realize the crucial of pronunciation.

There are 3 main problems that students have encountered during students’ self-studying pronunciation. They are having no instructor, no partner to practice with or the impact of mother tongue gain the highest chosen (roughly 50% each). Moreover, other difficulties are having no motivation, repeatedly mispronouncing leading to boredom, or unable to find appropriate materials also interrupt students’ self-study (around 30% each).

These problems are mainly due to the fact that students have no one to learn with or no instructor to promote their learning; while other difficulties are primarily linked to learning styles in which students want to find their motivation.

Watch Television programs or movies; lookup dictionaries, listening and identifying and learning through songs are used the most by students, accounting for approximately 77%, 63%, 61% in turns.
