1. INTRODUCTION

1.1. Reason for choosing the topic

In today's era, the era of scientific, technical and information explosion, the

trend of globalization and integration between countries also poses a veryimportant task for our country's education sector. Above all times, languagedifferences are a heavy barrier to cooperation and absorption of scientific, technological and cultural advances between countries and peoples. Manycountries around the world are using English as their national language, andEnglish has been chosen as an international language. Therefore, the Ministry ofEducation and Training has introduced English into Vietnam's educationalprogram from the elementary level. However, the ability of Vietnamese studentsto communicate in English still not proficient and not commensurate with thelevel compared to other subjects. I think creating a communication environmentfor students to practice is a necessary method to improve their foreign languagelearning ability. However, time in class is limited with a lot of contentknowledge and a large number of students, so conducting extracurricularsessions both enhances the spirit of love for the subject and consolidates theamount of knowledge in class.

Creating a comfortable atmosphere for communication is extremely useful toovercome the above difficulties. In order to improve the effectiveness of Englishteaching in high schools and practice communication skills for students, I chose

the topic of Experience Initiative: “The role of extracurricular activities in

promoting and improving language skills of 11th grade students at highschool.”

1.2. The aim of the study

- Develop a process for organizing extracurricular activities- Design some English extracurricular activities

- Organize some extracurricular sessions for students

thereby determining the content of extracurricular activities.

1.4. Research Subjects.

- System of basic and in-depth knowledge about "language skills" in English 11.- Documents on extracurricular activities in learning, developing communicationskills, developing thinking, improving understanding of subject knowledge as

- Methods for designing extracurricular activities in teaching and learning aboutreading comprehension, listening, speaking, and grammar skills of Englishgrades 11.

1. 5. Research methods

- High school textbooks

- Use the form of conversation with teachers and students to investigate teachingand learning to create interest for high school students as well as applyextracurricular activities.

- Conduct research on relevant documents to serve as a theoretical and practicalbasis for the topic.

- Find information in books, newspapers, internet...

1.6. Purpose of writing experience initiatives

To help students overcome difficulties in learning foreign languages effectively,I have tried to research and study written documents on methods, along withpractical experiences in the teaching process. I have drawn some goodexperiences in teaching methods and creating excitement for students in English.I hope my experience will be a small document for my colleagues to refer to.What students like most about class is being able to regularly apply Englishcommunication in many different situations right in class so that students canthink well and react quickly. The teacher's enthusiasm combined with interestingtopics help students overcome both psychological and language barriers to keepthe classroom atmosphere vibrant and exciting.

“ The lessons are very interesting and the extracurricular activities are

exciting, making students excited about learning English. After the course, thestudents not only speak English fluently, listen well, read correctly and write inthe correct style but are also much bolder in communicating with each

other. Extracurricular activities are good opportunities for students to apply

English in practice and are also an opportunity for teachers to see the abilities of

each student in the class."

With the motto "To learn is to be able to use", applying applied teaching and

learning methods. Because of that, we must create opportunities for students sothey can apply and practice what they have. To attract students, teachers mustprepare meaningful, realistic and attractive activities. Most of our students learnbut cannot use it because they do not have a broad vision and do not realize theimportance of English for future work.

2.1.1. Status of research and organization of "extracurricular activities" inthe world.

Every year, of the more than 30,000 applications students submit to each topuniversity such as Harvard, Stanford, Yale, UCLA, almost half of them haveachieved impressive TOEFL, SAT, and academic average scores. So how doesthe admissions committee select the most deserving students?

After reviewing scores, the admissions committee will read students' essays, interviews, and extracurricular activities. With one of the two required essays, students must write about the meaning and influence on their personality anddreams. If score factors can be predicted because each school publishes theaverage scores of admitted students, these essays and extracurricular activitiesare considered the "hardest" to predict. But to really give weight to theseactivities in essays and interviews, the following elements need to be achieved:

- Enthusiasm and passion of students

- The growth and development of students' personalities through eachchallenging step of the activity

- Leadership qualities, dynamism, courage to promote own ideas andwork in groups

- Long-term, persistent commitment of students to growing andcontributing to each activity

Speaking about comprehensive education, Rabowle (1494-1533), a Renaissancethinker and educator, once emphasized, "Education must include intellectual, moral, physical, aesthetic content... In addition to studying at home, there arealso visits to factories and shops, contact with writers and parliamentarians, especially once a month teachers and students go to live in the countryside for aday."

Makarenco - a famous Russian pedagogue in the early 20th century, also said: "Ipersistently say that educational issues and educational methods cannot belimited to teaching issues, even more so. so that the educational process is onlycarried out in the classroom, which should be in every square meter of ourcountry... Meaning that under any circumstances, we must not think thateducational work is only carried out in the classroom. ”

2.1.2 Status of research and organization of "extracurricular activities" inVietnam.

HUNA - Extracurricular classes help improve children's thinking and creativity.Extracurricular activities - certainly not a strange phrase to Vietnamese schools, parents and students Nam. However, whether extracurricular activities can trulybe effective in improving the quality of teaching and learning is still a difficultproblem.

Trang 6

In developed countries around the world, building collaborative researchnetworks and improving capacity to implement extracurricular educationalactivities is an important issue. In traditional classrooms that are currently verypopular in Vietnam Nam, teachers are considered information providers, knowledge is only transmitted in one direction from teacher to student, whichhas also been causing boredom. . New teaching methods need to combine bothplay and learning elements to help children be more excited when participatingin learning while also appreciating children's proactive element. Those whodirectly teach in high schools are very interested in how to promote students'initiative and creativity, arousing passion and interest in extracurricular learningin the current situation.

Extracurricular activities in school not only help students be active and healthy, but also create a friendly learning environment between students, between classand class, and between students. with teachers. Extracurricular activities can becarried out in different forms depending on each school. Some schools haveestablished cultural, arts and sports clubs to encourage students to participate. Some schools organize extracurricular activities during holidays, New Year, andtraditional school days. Extracurricular subjects can include: Swimming, volleyball, badminton, cooking...

2.2. Theoretical basis of the topic.

2.2.1. Learn about ''Extracurricular Activities''.

In order to improve the quality of teaching the subject, recently, on

research forums, conferences and seminars, people have discussed a lot aboutthe issue of innovating teaching methods. The pressing concern for those whodirectly teach in high schools is how to promote students' initiative andcreativity, improve the effectiveness of aesthetic education, and arouse passionand interest. Study subjects in the current situation.

To solve the above situation, it is necessary to combine and innovate teachingmethods for both curricular and extracurricular activities, but first of all, theremust be a correct concept of the importance and meaning of extracurricularactivities.

Extracurricular activities according to the concept of innovating teachingmethods are an active, useful and effective form of self-study, connecting theclassroom with real life, expanding and prolonging the field of reflection andevaluation. about lessons for students; Promoting the positivity and creativity oflearners, checking the quality of teaching during regular hours. Extracurricularactivities, therefore, are both educational and aesthetic activities, "Contributingto creating a cultural lifestyle and the ability to enjoy arts and culture forstudents. Through extracurricular activities, Students have balanceddevelopment in intelligence, morality, physical education and aesthetics" (Phan

2.2.2. Effects of extracurricular activities.

Through outdoor games and group discussions, children will practiceleadership skills, including the skills to define vision and goals, motivate teams, plan projects, and have ideas. perseverance to overcome challenges. Moreimportantly, your sharing sessions on how to pursue and create extracurricularactivities will help students after the program determine where to start their ownactivities.

Therefore, although parents or students can find extracurricular activities, if theabove factors are not met, it will be difficult for students to become "special"with their abilities.

Following the process of innovating teaching methods in high schools in recentyears, the innovative content often focuses on curricular hours, whileextracurricular forms are less focused on implementation. Are students'extracurricular activities not important and do not play a role in improving thequality of teaching and learning of the subject? It is time to redefine the positionand role of extracurricular activities, promoting the creativity and excitement ofstudents.

2.2.3. Theoretical basis

Foreign language is one of the linguistic skills in the process of communication.Like the skill of learning Vietnamese when you were a child, because thelanguage that is absorbed through listening is spoken. Learning from textbooksfor an entire school year will make students bored and stressed. When teachingcontent in textbooks, teachers often have to logically follow the order of thecurriculum content and arrange it orderly as prescribed by the Ministry ofEducation; Teaching and learning between teachers and students often repeatsthroughout the entire school year. To create a new atmosphere, a new space, wemust change the space and time for children, so that they have the opportunity tofreely think and escape the pressure of studying. That's why I boldly created anumber of extracurricular classes in a semester. Extracurricular lessons aredecided by teachers in terms of time and space for students, depending on theconvenient location of the school. Furthermore, participating in extracurricularswill help students become more active and bolder. Just doing it 2-3 times asemester will help students become interested in learning English, giving themthe opportunity to apply what they learn in class. Therefore, when teachingforeign languages, in addition to general tips applied to receptive skills, teachersalso need to have specific tips for students' extracurricular activities.

To have a quality extracurricular activity session, teachers need to follow thefollowing basic teaching tips:

Trang 8

2.2.4. Clearly define for students to understand extracurricular Englishlearning.

Why is learning English a difficult task?

When students study, the teacher imparts knowledge, they get used to justlearning grammar and doing exercises. In addition, teachers also emphasizelanguage expression through exercises, so forming habits that are difficult tochange in language learning. Therefore learning foreign languages becomesmore difficult. When studying, students face the following difficulties:

- Unable to control own language volume.

- Improve reading and writing skills to participate in exams.- Lessons have many new words, lazy to study.

- not paying attention to pronunciation, intonation, and tone.

- Students who do not listen and speak often will not recognize the words theyknow.

So how can we help students expand the scope of their foreign languagelearning, so that an English lesson is less stressful and becomes moreinteresting? Is that something that many teachers are wondering about?

Do students feel confused when having to speak English? Are you embarrassedbecause your pronunciation is bad? Or do you still make many grammaticalerrors when speaking?

Do you have difficulty trying to understand native speakers? Or do you feel likea failure because you can't understand the language of the characters in themovie easily?

Will our students never learn English well? Are you sad because you havestudied English for many years but still cannot speak English easily?

To improve the situation and answer the above questions is the task of ourteachers.

High schools want to create a diverse and rich environment, and they also valuelearning outside the classroom (from the surrounding environment andcommunity) as much as learning in the classroom. Therefore, they need studentswith different interests and extracurricular activities to contribute to thehundreds of clubs and programs at school. On the other hand, it is these well-rounded students who will make the best use of college opportunities to grownot only academically but also socially, culturally, and personally.

Extracurricular activities are activities outside the regular curriculum, usuallyvoluntary rather than mandatory. You can participate in extracurricular activitiesin class/school or in society with many different options: Sports, Culture, Arts,Volunteering, Organizations... Extracurricular activities play an important role.

in adding skills and life experiences to you, helping you become a morecomprehensive and interesting person. Extracurricular activities in the Englishsubject are not simple, teachers have to prepare many visual tools to helpstimulate students' curiosity and interest in this subject.

2.3. Measures to create an effective English extracurricular activity:

- Allow students to choose topics or content pre-limited by the teacher. This attracts students' attention to the topic and makes them interested in thelesson

- Introduce the topic, context, situations, and content related to the activity:explore what students know and do not know about the content of the topic, arouse curiosity, create interest in content of the article to be discussed.

- Explain some necessary words and structures: however, there is no needto introduce all new words, so let students guess the meaning of the word incontext. If students don't understand the meaning of a word, I will explain itwith a definition or give an example.

- Prepare specific requirements, tasks and roles for each extracurricularactivity.

- When conducting activities, using visual aids, pictures, illustrations, movies, music or playing the role of characters in a story. The accompanyinginformation will be of great help in clarifying the context and suggestingdiscussion content. Pictures are a means to test students' understanding.

- Conducted in three stages: before, during and after extracurricularactivities. Divide the process into steps: for example, watching a video clipdepending on the topic, I divide it into three parts

+ Discuss main ideas, answer guiding questions, compare predictions.+ View details of that video.

+ Discuss and follow my request about the recent clip.

- Exploit the differences in the answers of pairs and groups, compare the resultsand discuss after answering.

- Ensuring the quality of the activities.+ Good quality radio tape and projector

+ The teacher works at an average speed, pronounces accurately, and gives clearand detailed instructions.

2.4. Types of extracurricular activities.

Trang 10

Participating in theseactivities will help you discover yourself and discover qualities other thanacademic intelligence. So, if you haven't participated yet, now is the time tothrow yourself out there and discover yourself.
