U.S. Distributors by the Number

Introduction
Going into Toronto, out of 337 films showing, 56 have U.S. distributors attached. As buyers buy
throughout the Fall Festival and Market Season, this number will change, so stay tuned for more
reports. For a comprehensive report on current U.S. Distributors A – Z for the year 2011, use the
link provided. New U.S. distributors are still popping up like mushrooms!!
Since U.S. still represents up to 30% of the market (the largest market share of any country), it
plays an important part in worldwide marketing. Predictably, SPC and IFC have the most films in
the festival, each with 7 titles for now.
There is also the competition among the Producer Reps for titles to represent. Producer Reps used
to be knowledgeable individuals who could help producers make deals with U.S. distributors. Over
the past few years the talent agencies have entered this area on behalf of clients and only a few
individuals have continued in this sphere. Among the Producer Reps, CAA is leading the pack with
12 films, one of which already has U.S. distribution.
This fairly new development of agencies representing the producers causes some conflict for
international sales agents who must plan the worldwide strategy for film sales and now have to
consider how best to incorporate the U.S. sales into their strategy even, if the sale no longer is under
their control.
This report tracks these numbers in order to help professionals map out their own strategy for their
films when considering how to make the most of the Toronto Film Festival if their film is favored
enough to be selected for this major world event on the international film circuit.
