Hetty Green was only child in a rich family. She was born in Massachusetts, the USA, in
1835. Her father was a millionaire. Her mother was often ill, and so from the age of two her
father took her with him to work and taught her about stocks and shares. At the age of six she
started reading the financial newspapers and she opened her own account at a famous bank.
Her father died when she was 21 and she got $7.5 million from him. She went to New York
and started doing business in Wall Street. She made money so easily that people called her
“The Witch of Wall Street”. However, she saved every penny, eating in the cheapest
restaurants, and living in a small house. She became one of the richest and most hated women

in the world

Passage 2
I have learnt a few simple rules for traveling.
First, you should check your departure times. Once I arrived at the airport a few minutes before ten. I
thought the plane left at 10.50. But the clerk at the desk told me that the departure time was 10.15 and
that I could not get on that flight.
Secondly, you should have some money of the country you are going to. A few years ago I flew from
London to Oklahoma in the States. I arrived there at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed.
I took a taxi to the hotel and the taxi driver refused angrily when I paid him in British pounds. I had
to borrow a few dollars from a clerk at the hotel.
The last rule is to know the weather of your destination, which may be very different from the
weather at home

Passage 1
One of the smallest countries in the world is San Marino, which is high in the mountain of
Italy. It is also the oldest because it was founded some 1,500 years ago. San Marino covers
61 square kilometers and has over 17 thousand people. Its coins and stamps are eagerly
bought by collectors.
Another popular small country is Andorra, the mountain state of 11 thousand people between
France and Spain. Anyone who collects the stamps of Andorra soon notices a strange thing
about them. Some stamps are printed in Spain. Other stamps are like French stamps. The
reason is: for 700 years, the state has been under the joint protection of France and Spain, and
these two countries have separate postal services in Andorra. You can find two post offices
standing next to each other in a village, but selling different stamps.

Dear Dennis

I just wanted to say thank you for putting me up before I caught the plane last week. It was a lovely
evening, and I enjoyed meeting your friends, Peter and Sarah. I managed to get to the airport with
plenty of time to spare. I even tried to get an earlier flight, but it wasn’t possible.
I had a wonderful holiday in Spain. I just loved driving through the countryside, and I often stopped
to walk round a mountain village. I met my friends, Bill and Sue, and they invited me to have a meal
with them. They wanted me to stay with them, but I couldn’t, as I had already booked a hotel.
The weather was fantastic. The sun didn’t stop shining all the time I was there. Leaving Spain was
very sad. It made me want to cry.
