Unit 8 Celebrations
Lesson 1(P.49) Getting started + Listen and read
A. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to
- get some information about Tet, Passover and Easter celebrations
- practice reading comprehension skill for details to complete a table
B. Language focus:
1. Vocabulary: slavery, sticky rice cake, joyful, parade, Jewish
2. Grammar: Relative clause
C. Teaching aids: Cassette, CD, pictures, poster.
D. Procedure:

1. Warm-up:
- Shows a picture of the Mid-Fall festival
and ask Ss:
(?) What can you see in the picture?
(?) When do these activites happen?
- Says: The Mid-Fall festival is one of the
most important celebrations of
Vietnamese people.
- Asks Ss to list the names of other
celebrations in VN and in the world.
II. Pre-reading
1. Getting started:
- Show the pictures p. 65 and the names
of the celebrations and ask Ss to work in
pairs to match the names with suitable
pictures.


- Check in public.
- Give feedback
- Show the pictures of a village teacher,
Pssover, and Easter to lead in the content
of the passages p.65-66
2. Vocabulary:
- Use different techniques to teach some
vocab.

* Check vocab. : What and Where
3. True or False statements:
- Give Ss some statements and ask them
- Look at the picture and asnwer the
questions:

- Look at the pictures and work with a partner
to do the task.
- Give the answer:

II. While-reading
1. Listen and read to check the
prediction
- Ask Ss to listen to the tape for the first
time to check the prediction.
- Check the answer
- Give feedback.
2. Table completion
- Gets Ss to listen to the tape for the
second time and complete the table p.66
with the missing information in groups
of three
- Check the answer by collecting the
posters from 3 groups and give feedback
3. Comprehension questions:
- Asks Ss to work in pairs to answer the
three questions:

a. What do Vietnamese people think
about Tet?
b. When do Jewish eat the special meal
called the Seder?
c. In which condition on Easter can
young children get chocolate or sugar
eggs?
- Check in public and give feedback
4. Grammar: Relative clause
- Asks Ss some questions to elicit the
model sentences.

-> Tet is a festival which occurs in late
January or early February.
- Give the second example:
* The boy is friendly. He sits next to me.
-> The boy who sits next to me is
friendly.
- Explain the use of relative pronouns:
Which and Who.
- Asks Ss to find two more examples
from the passages.
III. Post-reading
- Asks Ss to work in groups od three Ss to
discuss about what happen in some
celebrations they know.
- Give feedback

- Sum up the lesson

V. Homework
- Read the statements and give their ideas
- Listen and check the prediction and find the
correct information for the false statements.
- Give the answer
- Work in groups of three Ss and listen to fill
in the table the information missing on a
poster
- Give the asnwer:
- Work in pairs to answer the questions

Vietnamese people
