When industrialization began, little thought was given to its ecological effects on the environment. Raw,
untreated sewage allowed to pollute our river and seas. Animals were killed for profits to the point of extinction.
The loss of trees through uncontrolled deforestation caused erosion and unstable climate.
Acid rain was caused by the poisonous gas which man sent into the atmosphere. Chemicals in pesticides
killed animal life. Herbicides destroyed plants. As a result, the balance of nature was disturbed.
It is only now that we are waking up to the problem. More natural, organic farming is advocated.
Legislation controls the disposal of waste products into our air and water. Wildlife organizations are becoming
more militant in their fight for animal rights. Replanting policies in some parts of he world mean that our forests
should in the future be sustainable.
We can only hope that growing public awareness and enlightened legislation will produce a world which is
safe for us and will provide a good quality of life for future generations.
1. Did the ecological effects of industrialization on the environment receive much attention at first?

2. What happened when poisonous gases were sent into the atmosphere?

3. Why was the balance of nature disturbed?

4. What helps to sustain our forests in the futures?

5. What will growing public awareness and enlightened legislation hopeful result in?

The Secrets of a Very Long Life
There are several places in the world that are famous for people who live a very long time. These places
are usually in mountainous areas, far away from modern cities. Hunza, in the Himalayas, is where many people
over 100 years of age are still in good physical health. Additionally, men of ninety and women of fifty still have
babies. Scientists think that these people have these benefits: a healthful unpolluted environment with clean air
and water; a simple diet high in vitamins, fiber, and nutrition, but low in fat, cholesterol, sugar, and unnatural

chemicals; and physical work as well as other activities in the fields. The Caucasus Mountains in Russia are
also famous for the longevity of its inhabitants mostly farmers. One reason for the good health of the people
might be regular exercise in the moderate climate: the temperature is about 70 Fahrenheit all year long. In
addition, the water from mountain streams is high in minerals a very valuable resource for people,
vegetables, fruits, and wildlife.
6. Men over 80 years old in Hunza can be new fathers.

There are many sources of pollution in our modern world. At present, the most serious sources are acid
rain, car exhaust fumes and oil spills.
Factory chimneys give out smoke that contains sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. These gases combine
with the moisture in the atmosphere to form sulfuric acid and nitric acid. When it rains, these acids dissolve in
the rain and make it acidic. Acid rain is believed to be the worst pollution problem of all. It has harmed aquatic
life by turning limestone in the rocks to neutralize the acid rain naturally. One remedy is to pump limestone into
the acidic lakes. However, It is not possible to do this on a large enough scale to save all the lakes.
Car exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide and lead which are highly poisonous. In big cities, the exhaust
fumes build up and pose a health hazard to human beings.
Pollution of the sea by oil threatens marine life. Much of the oil comes from ships that clean their fuel tanks
while at sea. Offshore oil wells also discharge vast amounts of oil into the sea. Pollution of the sea can also be
caused by oil spills. An oil spill may occur as a result of accidents involving oil tankers.
41. What are the most serious sources of pollution?
42. Why is smoke from factory chimneys harmful to our environment?
43. What does this in ( However, it is not possible to do this) mean?
44. What do car exhaust fumes contain?
45. What sources cause pollution of the sea?

It is very important to have healthy teeth. Good teeth help us to chew our food. They also help us to look
nice. How does a tooth go bad? The decay begins in a little crack in the enamel covering of the tooth. This
happens after germs and bits of food have collected there then the decay slowly spreads inside the tooth.
Eventually, poison goes into the blood, and we may feel quite ill.
How can we keep our teeth healthy? Firstly, we ought to visit our dentist twice a year. He can fill the
small holes in our teeth before they destroy the teeth. He can examine our teeth to check that they are growing
in the right way. Unfortunately, many people wait until they have toothache before they see a dentist. Secondly,
we should brush our teeth with a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day-once after breakfast
and once before we go to bed. We can also use wooden toothpicks to clean between our teeth after a meal.
Thirdly, we should eat food that is good for our teeth and our body: milk , cheese, fish, brown bread , potatoes,
red rice, raw vegetables and fresh fruit. Chocolate, sweets, biscuits and cakes are bad, especially when we eat
them between meals. They are harmful because they stick to our teeth and cause decay.

Đoạn I:
A recent investigation by scientists at the U.S Geological Survey shows that strange animal behavior might
help predict future earthquakes. Investigators found such occurrences about ten kilometers from an area where
a fairly recent earthquake took place. "Some birds made strange sounds and flew about wildly, dogs barked and
ran around uncontrollably".
Scientists believe that animals can sense these environmental changes as early as several days before
the disaster.
In 1976 after observing animal behavior, the Chinese scientists were able to predict a terrifying earthquake.
Although hundreds of thousands of people were killed, the government was able to evacuate millions of other
people and thus keep the death toll at a lower level.

§o¹n II:
There are many sources of pollution in our modern world. At present, the most serious sources are acid
rain, car exhaust fumes and oil spills. Factory chimneys give out smoke that contains sulphuric dioxide and
nitrogen oxide. These gases combine with moisture in the atmosphere to form sulphuric acid and nitric acid.
When it rains, these acids dissolve in the rain and make it acidic. Acid rain is believed to be the worst pollution
of all. It has harmed aquatic life by turning many lakes into lifeless bodies of water. Car exhaust fumes contain
carbon monoxide and lead which are highly poisonous. In big cities, the exhaust fumes build up and pose a
health hazard to human beings. Pollution of the sea by oil threatens marine life. Much of the oil comes from
ships that clean their fuel tanks while at sea. Offshore oil wells also discharge vast amounts of oil into the sea.
Pollution of the sea can also be caused by oil spills.
