THE ERA OF JIANG ZEMIN
Willy Wo-Lap Lam
This book is the Western world’s first in-depth look at Jiang Zemin – one of the
most influential leaders in the world, in terms of his personality, philosophy, and
statecraft. Readers will understand developments in China in key arenas such
as politics and leadership issues, economic policy and social problems, as well
as new ideas and trends for the new century. The book affords readers a rare,
behind-the-scenes glimpse at Communist party politics in action. The author
draws on interviews with hundreds of cadres, civil servants, academics, diplomats,
businessmen, and other China experts. Perspective observations and a well-
argued analysis of the Chinese reality are drawn from these first-hand
investigations, thanks to the author’s two decades of experience as a China-
watcher.

REWRITING THE RULES

The Malaysian Crisis Management Model
Mahani Zainal Abidin
In this book, Dr Mahani, as a member of the Working Group of the National
Economic Action Council, provides readers with an insight into Malaysia’s
management of the Asian Crisis and its attempt at rewriting the rules. She
explains how the NEAC came to drive the fast recovery, through new and well-
deployed policies. This book examines the pertinent macroeconomic issues
leading to the decision to boost Malaysia’s domestic economy and peg the
ringgit. It also looks into the possibility of replicating these measures in other
countries.

WHEN ASIA MEETS CHINA IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM
China’s Role in Shaping Asia’s Post-Crisis
Economic Transformation
Chi Lo
This book is the single most far-reaching treatment on the complex subject of
Asia’s future economic changes. It is a provocative thesis with a forward-looking
manner on Asia’s macroeconomic challenges under the shadow of
China’s economic clout. Various themes are knitted together elegantly within

the time-tested general equilibrium framework to arrive at a new economic
paradigm of chronic deflation, profit squeeze, and constrained economic
growth that Asia is moving into. The book uses strong analytics to refute certain
conventional thoughts about Asia and China, and instigates thinking outside
the box.

THE MAKINGS OF AN ASIAN
ENTREPRENEUR
Kenny Yap
This book was written with the intent of having the chapters
read independently, so that readers could choose to start
at any chapter they like. Kenny The Fish gives an honest
account of how the Yap family survived many setbacks,
overcoming their problems together and became more
united as one family. Kenny shares his many experiences
in running a family business that has spanned over 12
years.
Kenny’s greatest challenge in writing this book was the
chapter, Striking a Balance, an art that requires much
logic and practice. Our whole life is about balancing
things – once they become more balanced, life would
be easier. Kenny talks about networking to succeed – the
fact that no school teaches networking but sometimes,
it is not what you know, but who you know. People learn
from one another in order to progress but we can learn
from other species too, especially fishes.
The brilliant use of different types of fishes to describe life
and business philosophies in general, coupled with Kenny’s
10 candid and interesting Fishy Quotes, make this book
an inspirational and enjoyable read.

EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS IN
SINGAPORE
Fourth Edition
Tan Chwee Huat
During the past two decades, several books discussing
issues related to employment relations in Singapore have
been written. But, most of them deal with only one or two
specific topics. This book covers all the major issues in
employment relations in Singapore using a tripartite model
based on Dunlop’s conceptual framework. It is written
mainly for students who need to know the basic issues in
employment relations. Human resource managers, trade
unionists, trainers, and public administrators will also find

it a useful reference.
The book discusses important issues such as the main
participants in the tripartite system, main employment
laws, collective bargaining, wage reform, flexible wage
system and wage negotiation, the impact of recession,
productivity and quality management, skills and
employability, and employment relations in Southeast
Asian countries. This new edition has also seen the inclusion
of the Code of Responsible Employment Practices, SARS
relief package, the Tripartite Guidelines on Managing
Excess Manpower, and the Tripartite Taskforce on Wage
Restructuring.
