I. Women rights = human rights + extra women’s rights
• Substantive rights of human beings.
Right to life
Freedom from torture
Freedom from slavery
Right to a fair trial
Freedom of speech (freedom of expression, the cornerstone of any democracy, is
ensuring that more and more women get their due in society).

Freedom of thought, conscience and religion
Rights debates
• Extra women’s rights
Sex discrimination at work (women cannot drive, are not allowed to work where
there are men and can only attend segregated schools and universities, woman
witness’s testimony is given half the weight of that of a male witness, a woman can
inherit only half as much as a man, and a female victim of an accident is entitled to
only half the compensation awarded to a male).


Maternity and childcare policy
Domestic violence (Women have to seek male approval for every act)

II. Women jobs = house wives & workers
Women are still likely to be responsible for double-jobbing, i.e. balancing between home and
work

- There are more women than ever before in the UK labor market.


(20 years ago men held 2.5 million more jobs than women. Today the figure is even. 73% of
women of working age are in work (84% for men). Over half of women with dependent
children aged under 5 are working).
- The needs of flexibility, planning, organizing, teamwork, multi-tasking – all skills and
attributes that come naturally to women.
- Take the advantages of gender and out-look.
- However out of the world’s 27 major economies, the UK is 23

in the number of women
entrepreneurs.
- Women have more power ( take part in politics)
• Professional and related jobs: scientist, engineer, etc
- Now, the number of women taking jobs in these field remains quite low but it
is increasing.
- Female researchers are also younger
- Women are well suited for in Information-oriented era (while men are were
well suited for the industrial era – because of strength)
• Service jobs
- Women’s participation in business and social activities are important.
- Britain more than half a million skilled workers will be needed to satisfy the
demands of the aerospace and transport industries
