1. ĐƯA RA LỜI KHUYÊN VÀ ĐỀ NGHỊ - GIVING ADVICE &
MAKING SUGGESTIONS
Thông thường ta đề nghị bằng cách đặt câu hỏi như sau:
Why don’t you move the bin to the rubbish instead of carrying
the rubbish to the bin?
Ta có thể chấp nhận lời khuyên kiểu này bằng cách nói:
Why don’t you use the internet to find out?
Good. I hadn’t thought of that.
GRAHAM
Why don’t you advertise in the newspaper? Put a photograph of
your brother there. Somebody might recognise him.
ANNE
Good, I hadn’t thought of that.
Một cách đưa lời khuyên khác là nói: If I were you…
Nghe băng và nhắc lại.
If I were you…
Sau đó bạn đưa ra lời khuyên
If I were you I would stop smoking.
GRAHAM
If I were you, I’d report your brother missing.
Khi đưa ra đề nghị hoặc bảo ai làm việc gì, sẽ lịch sự hơn khi nói

Cách nói thân mật: I reckon
I think you should go to the police.
I reckon you should go to the police.
Khi đưa ra lời khuyên ta thường nói should hay ought to.
I think you should go to the police.
I think you ought to go to the police.

GRAHAM
I think you should go to the police.
Trái nghĩa với should là should not hay shouldn’t.
You shouldn’t smoke.
ANNE
But he says I shouldn’t look for him.
Để xin lời khuyên, bạn nói should trước tiên.
Should I buy that car?
ANNE
Should I tell my parents about the letter?
2. HAVE TO, MUST & SHOULD HAVE
Khi chỉ có 1 lựa chọn duy nhất ta nói have to hoặc must.
You have to water the plant or it will die.
You must water the plant or it will die.
Đối với những việc không bắt buộc, ta nói should.
You should fertilise plants to make them grow well.
Ta nói should have cho những việc ta nghĩ sẽ tốt trong quá khứ.

I should have turned the oven off!
Dùng nói để thể hiện sự tiếc nuối.
I should have studied more.
I should have stopped smoking years ago.
3. WOULD & WILL
Dùng will cho những việc ta dự định làm hay sẽ làm.
I will go on holiday next week.
Would là một dạng của will, dùng cho các việc ta ước, hay tưởng
tượng sẽ xảy ra.
I wish it would stop raining.
It would be good to be very rich.

Would được dùng trong những yêu cầu lịch sự như:
I would like a drink.
Để làm ai cảm thấy tốt hơn về điều sắp xảy ra, ta nhấn mạnh will.
I’m sure everything will be all right.
