RESPONDING TO
ERRORS
Larry Andrew
*Problem:
- Have you ever heard or seen the
sentences like this:
+ He gave the book to Tom and I.
+ He given the book to Tom and me.
-
In our English classes , the students
often write or speak unconventional or
unlikely construction.
-
This happens even in classes of native
English speakers.
-
The unconventional expressions seem
to loom larger in the eyes of some in
the English class.
* Teacher’s behaviour:
+ Some become concerned,
compelled to correct every mistake.
+ Some ignore every mistake.
*What about you?
Think of it and share your idea later.
*The writer’s advice:
+ Resist the temptation to correct
every error , spoken or written.
+ Especially, with older English
learners: resist their request for you to
correct whenever they make a mistake.
* The writer’s suggestion:
- Always provide for your students ,
in your writing and speaking:
+ The most appropriate model of use,
most commonly used in yourcommunity.
+ direct instruction and corrective
feedback with the items carrying the
greatest social stigma in society.
*For example:
+ He gave the book to Tom and I. (1)
+ He given the book to Tom and me. (2)
the writer’ s idea:
+ Sentence 1:
- He wouldn’t spend time on devising
activities to help students distinguish between I
and me
He submits that: 50% of the native English
speaking public can t make the distinction.’
I and me are used interchangeably today in
the objective position.
( This is commonly used in your community)
-
If I and me distinction is important to you,
model the appropriate use.
Sentence 2:
- He would discretely attend to this error
right away .
This construction will be stigmatized
(This is the greatest social stigma).
*Conclusion:
Our job is not to prepare English learners
in our image, but in concert with the
English- speaking culture they will live in.
