10 SPEAKING CARDS – SAMPLE
Card 1
Describe a young child you know or know about.
You should say:
• What he or she looks like
• What he or she likes doing
• How that person has changed
And say what you think they might do in the future, and why.
I’m going to talk about my little son. He is five years old. He looks tall and chubby.
He has short dark hair and very bright eyes. He really enjoys going to the kindergarten
where he meets a lot of new friends and plays with friends at the same age. He is very
naughty and stubborn. He sometimes comes back home with some scratches on his
face. At home, he likes playing with his toys such as Lego puzzle, robots, trains or
planes ect. He is particularly interested in watching cartoons. He can spend hours
watching cartoons on cartoon network. His favourite one is Tom and Jerry. At the
weekend, my husband and I often take him to the zoo where there is fresh air and also
great chance for my son to look at animals.
When he was little, we were very worried that he was underweight because he was
very lazy eating. Luckily, he has a good appetite now and looks very chubby. We
don’t have to force him to eat any longer. So as a child, he has changed a lot. That’s
why we regularly go shopping for his clothes.
It is very difficult to say what he will do in the future. My son really likes doing
puzzles, so we guess that he might do something related to natural science. An
engineer or an architect perhaps
Card 2
Describe an old person you know or know about.
You should mention:
• What that person looks like
• What he or she likes doing
• How that person has changed since they were younger

And say if you think that person is happy to be that age or not and why.
I'm going to talk about my father because he has been a major influence in my life.
My father looks tall and rather thin. He has got thick eyebrows and a little mustache.
He has got very bright eyes. He was always a good role model for me as I was
growing up. He's hard-working, patient and understanding; he's also got a good sense
of humour and seems to get on well with everybody. Hopefully I've inherited some of
these traits. My father is now retired and has a lot of free time. He enjoys watching
TV especially news program, playing chess with my neighbours and taking care of his
grandchildren. My father loves travelling a lot, too. Therefore, my parents try their
best to explore one place each year. Last year, they went to Danang and they’re going
to Ninh Binh this year.
My father has changed a lot. He has some wrinkles on his face now. Despite his old
age, I think he is still enjoying his life now because I can see his smiles on his face
and he always has a very positive outlook on life. My father really sets a good
example for us.
Card 3
Describe a building that has made an impression on you.
You should say:
• What it looks like
• Where it is
• What it is used for
And say if you like that building or not and why.
Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu Quốc Tử Giám) is my favourite place which has
made a great impression on me. It is located on Van Mieu, Quoc Tu Giam Street.
Although located in the city centre, it is rather peaceful and quiet. It has a long
entrance and a lot of trees and grass alongside.
It is a national historic site. It was built in 1070 in Ly dynasty as a Temple to be
dedicated to Kongzi – Confucian. Seven years later in 1076, the first university of
Vietnam was built there for princes and Generals’ sons to learn.
Nowadays, it becomes the symbol of Hanoi and among the most frequently visited

destinations in the capital of Vietnam besides Hoan Kiem Lake and Hanoi Old
Quarter. It symbolizes Vietnamese traditional fondness for learning. Therefore,
students often come here to pray for their success before taking exams.
I really enjoy visiting the Temple of Literature because I feel proud of our forefathers
when coming here.
Card 4
Describe a place which you think is beautiful.
You should say:
• What that place is like
• How you can get there from here
• What kind of people usually go there
And say why you think it is beautiful.
I have been to many places of interest in Vietnam but I think Halong Bay is the most
beautiful one. It was recognized as the World Heritage Site in 1994.
Halong Bay is located in Quang Ninh province, about 150km far from Hanoi. It is
easy to get to Halong Bay, either by bus from Hanoi or private car. It normally takes
about more than three hours to get there. Those who come from Danang or HCMC
can take a flight to Hai Phong and then drive to Halong Bay.
As it is tourist destination with spectacular scenery, both domestic and foreign tourists
are attracted to Halong Bay. Halong Bay is not only beautiful in terms of natural
beauty but also in terms of local people’s lives. Coming here, tourists can go on a
cruise to see the Bay with thousands of limestone mountains rising from clear, blue
water and explore numerous caves such as Surprising Cave, Dau Go Cave… There is
also ample opportunity to visit an island. One more thing that makes Halong attractive
is that tourists can visit some fishing villages during their stay and see how local
people raise fish and pearl in their farms.
Card 5
Talk about one thing you are planning to do or might do next weekend.
You should mention:
• Where you can do that thing

• How you can get there
• Any equipment you need to do it
And say whether you are looking forward to doing that thing or not, and why.
Next weekend my family is going to my hometown. We are going by bus and when
we get home, we are getting around by motorbike.
Next Saturday, we are leaving home rather early to catch the coach at around 7
o’clock in My Dinh stadium. Then it will take us about 4 hours to get to my
hometown, so it’s time for lunch then. As we haven’t been home for almost two
months, in the afternoon, we would like to just stay at home and relax. In the evening,
we are getting together with some of my old friends in a café in the city. We are going
to chat a lot about our work, our life… Next Sunday, I am planning to visit my
grandparents and some of my relatives in the morning. In the afternoon, we are
intending to go fishing at the lake near my house. My husband and I really like fishing
so we have bought a fishing rod and left it home. This time, we are only preparing
some bait. We are coming back Hanoi early Monday morning.
I can’t wait to go back home now. I am sure that we will have a great weekend next
week.
Card 6
Describe an item of clothing that you often wear.
You should say:
• What it looks like
• When and how you got it
• When you wear it
And say how it compares to other clothes you have.
I’m going to talk about my favourite T shirt. My friend gave it to my on my last
birthday.
It is made in Vietnam by PT2000. It is short sleeved. It has round neck and no colar. It
is blue and there are some words “no pain no gain” printed on the front. I like wearing
it on informal occasions, for example, going out with friends, attending friends’
birthday party or going on a picnic… It perfectly matches my jeans and flat shoes so I

often combine them together.
Although I have many other pieces of clothing, I prefer wearing that T-shirt because it
is not only a gift from my best friend but it also reflect my personality as a “flexible
and active” person.
Card 7
Talk about a pet you have or have had.
You should say:
• What it looked like
• What its personality was like
• What you do or did with it
And say what kind of person a similar pet might be suitable for.
I used to have a dog when I was little. My family got it from my uncle.
It was just two months old and looked very cute. It was a Vietnamese small sized dog.
It had silky black hair and very big ears. We called it “Muc” which means “black” in
English.
At first, when it came to my house, it did not eat much so my parents were very
worried. A week later, however, it seemed to be familiar with the new environment
and ate well. My all family loved it a lot because every time we were away, it helped
us to take care of the house. As for me particulary, I loved it not only because it was a
houseguard but it was also a good friend to accompany. I often fed it after each meal
and sometimes I walked the dog in the afternoon. Every time, a stranger came to my
house, it barked very loudly. However, whenever I came home, it seemed to recognize
its owner so it waved its ears to welcome me and approached me. In my free time, I
taught it to stand on the front legs and it did a really good job. Unluckily, it died in an
accident.
Now I live in the city and there is not enough room to raise a dog but having a pet dog
is really fun for children, especially those in the city because it can be a friend and
helps children not to feel lonely.
Card 8
Talk about your favourite leisure activity.

You should say:
• how often you do it
• who you often do it with
• why you enjoy doing it
And say what kind of people you would recommend this activity to, and why.
I enjoy doing a lot of things during my free time such as listening to music, watching
movies and walking. Among them, I like walking most because of several reasons.
Firstly, it is a cheap leisure activity that almost everyone can do. The only thing you
need to buy is a good pair of trainers. Secondly, it is great to go for a walk with your
friends or partner in the early morning or late afternoon when you can enjoy the fresh
air and have interesting conversations at the same time. It really helps not only to
relax but also to improve your health.
I first took up the activity when a friend of mine living in the same neighbourhood
asked me to go with her. At that time, we went for a walk for almost everyday expect
rainny days. After one month, I felt really healthier and rarely did I get ill. Now my
husband and I go for a walk together every early morning in the park near my house.
Walking is really easy to take up and I think it is suitable for people of all ages,
especially those who live near the park or spacious area for walking.
Card 9
Talk about a birthday you remember well.
You should say:
• What you did
• Who you spent the day with
• Why you remember that birthday so well
And say if you’d like to have exactly the same kind of birthday again or not, and why.
My last birthday might be the most memorable one for me.
My husband organized a small party for me in An Lac restaurant near my house.
Some of our close relatives and friends were invited to come. Everyone gave me a
birthday card and a present. My husband ordered a big birthday cake for dessert.
Before the party began, my husband made a speech and I blew out candles. Everyone

sang “happy birthday” song. While we were enjoying dinner together, we chatted with
each other.
My last birthday was really unforgetable for me because at that time, my little
daughter was three years old. With not so clear voice, she read a poem about mother
that made me really moved. I would wish to have my birthday with my family and
close friends but of course I would rather hold my special day in another restaurant for
a change.

Card 10
Talk about the best weather you have ever experienced.
You should say:
• what it was
• when it happened
• what you did during that weather
And explain why it is the best weather you have ever experienced.
The best weather we have ever experienced was when my family went on a trip to
Halong Bay last Summer.
I still remember it was a clear and sunny day. There were no clouds and the sky was
blue. Our family set off at eight o’clock in the morning and arrived in Halong at
eleven thirty. When we got there, it was very sunny but luckily the gentle breeze
cooled us down. We checked in our hotel – Halong Plaza and had a short rest. After
that, we went out to a restaurant and enjoyed some fresh seafood together. In the
afternoon, we all wanted to relax in the perfect weather. Therefore, we decided to go
to Bai Chay beach for a swim. My little son was playing on the beach and building
sand castle.
The following day, we took a boat trip to explore the Bay. We were all surprised at the
spectacular view of the Bay with thousands of limestone mountains rising from clear
water. We then headed for famous caves in Halong such as Thien Cung and Dau Go.
It was so cool inside the caves that we didn’t want to get out. At noon, we went back
to the Harbor and had lunch in Cua Vang restaurant before getting back to Hanoi.

It was a short two day trip but our family had a great time together. The fantastic
weather contributed to our wonderful trip
