1. In Japan, both men and women go to university and they study arts, or subjects such as English, literature.
But very few women study science, medicine or engineering. In engineering classes of thirty or forty
students there may be only one or two women. Men and women both go to University in order to get
good jobs: men want to work for a big company, be successful, earn a lot of money and support a family:
women, on the other hand, want to work for a big company because they have a better chance of meeting
a successful man and getting married. This is changing, however, and Japanese women are beginning to
look for a job because they like it rather than because they hope to find a good husband. Men have a job

for the whole of their lives and usually stay with the same company. A women may work for up to ten
years, but after that she usually marries. Most women are married by the age of 27, then they stay at home
and look after the children. A man might not mind if his wife goes to work, but she must look after the
children.
2. Greater numbers of today’s women are successfully managing to combine careers outside the home with
the traditional roles of wife, mother and homemaker. Many women took the obs of the men who were
drafted into military service during World War II. Women proved themselves to be capable, dependable
workers. Women workers do not yet receive equal treatment in the job market, either in the area of hiring,
or in the area of the salary. Perhaps one of the reasons for the disparity in pay between men and women is
that most of women in the United States work in low paying jobs. Women are now working as
corporateexecutives, officers in the armed forces, politicians, lawyers, and even as construction workers,
plumbers, police women and astronauts. Women are no longer willing to accept the idea of being second
class citizens in her homes, in their marriages, at work, or in school.
