IV. READING COMPREHENSION :
A. Read the text carefully and then choose the correct answer :
In the Middle Ages the hospital had a simple function: it was the gateway to
death. At its best, it led to a gentle and easy death, as a release from pain; at its worst, it
was the place where the sick were robbed of a flickering last hope and drowned in their
own despair.
To the modern hospital, the problem of death is of minor concern. The moden
hospital is haven for the sick, a source of knowledge of disease, and above all, a laboratory
where the sick are studied for their sakes, and the death for the benefit of the living. Far
from acting as a gateway to death, it is the window opening on an active scene of life.
It is true that the modern hospital merely performs duties that medicine has
performed throughout the ages according to its dim contemporary light: it must relieve the
pains of the suffuring and the dying, it must heal wounds and stop the ravages of disease.
What distinguishes it from its prdecessors, however, is not so much its greater efficiency
but the qualitative difference of its work.
