Passage 1
Coffee is a favorite hot drink in most countries. An old story says that coffee was
first discovered in Ethiopia. The people who took care of their sheep noticed that the
sheep stayed awake all night when they ate coffee beans and leaves.
People first used coffee as a food, then a kind of wine, and then medicine. Coffee
became a drink about 700 years ago.
People took coffee to Arabia in the thirteenth century. From there it went to
Turkey, Europe, and the Americas.
In 1963 the United Nations helped organize an International Coffee Agreement.
Countries that export coffee agree on the price. This agreement helps Brazil and the
other exporting countries get a fair price.

One of the smallest countries in the word is San Marino, which is high in the
mountain of Italy. It is also the oldest because it was founded 1,500 years ago. San
Marino covers 61 square kilometers and has over 17 thousand people. Its coins and
stamps are eagerly bought by collectors.
Another popular small country is Andorra, the mountain state of 11 thounsand
people between France an Spain. Anyone who collects the stamps of Andorra soon
notices a strange thing about them. Some stamps are printed in Spain. Other stamps are
like French stamps. The reason is: for 700 years, the state has been under the joint
protection of France and Spain, and these two countries have separate postal services
in Andorra. You can find two post offices standing next to each other, but selling
different stamps.

A recent survey has shown that the busiest shopping street in the world is not in
London, New York, or Paris, but in Warsaw. This lovely place to shop is called Nowy
Swiat, which means New World. In Nowy Swiat, the buildings aren’t too tall. There are
statues, palaces, attractive houses, exclusive cafes, and high-class restaurants. There are
no neon lights, no loud music, and not many tourists.
It is now possible to buy almost everything in Warsaw. There are a lot of shops
from the West, but the interesting thing is that Polish manufacturers are now producing
high quality goods. They are good because they are not mass produced.
Nowy Swiat also has a lot of small shops, specialist shops, and chic shops. It

dosen’t have the huge department stores that sell the same things everywhere.
