I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND
My name is Mary, and I came from Taiwan. Back there best friends always walk hand because holding
hands is our way of showing friendship. Now that I have been here for several years. I know that the friend
of the same sex, and even mothers and teenage daughters, seldom go hand in hand, but I didn’t know that
when I first came to America.
My first year in the United States, I met a girl who had been my classmate in Taiwan. We were excited that
we had met again on the other side of the earth, and of course, we became best friends. No one really knew
about us being best friends because we weren’t in the same class. Then one day, we were walking hand in
hand down the street to get some ice cream. A classmate saw us and seemed very surprised to see us like
that. She told us that in the United States, if people walk hand in hand, others will think they are lovers.
Friends usually don’t hold hands. After that we never went hand in hand in public, but only we were in our
own houses or among Chinese people.
