Read the following passage and choose the best answer for each question.
The problem of the use of our natural resources may be divided into four parts. These deal
with trees, soil, water and minerals. In a sense, the first three are closely related, for water is a
great destroyer of soil, and trees are its great protectors. Trees need both soil and water to
grow. And water, to be of any real use, needs to be kept by soil and trees. Minerals are apart.
They exist where they are because of the changing physical nature of the earth. Man has no

control over the creation of the minerals, and once a particular supply has been used up, it is
gone forever.
Conservation programmes have been instituted by most governments to prevent these four
essentials from reckless waste and to start the long process of repairing earlier damage to
forests, soil and water supply.

Read the passage carefully and then choose the best answers:
Women in Britain are better off today than they used to be. At the beginning of the 19th
century, women seem to have almost no rights at all. They could not vote, or even sign a
contract. Their marriages were arranged by their parents. They were once kept at home and if
they were allowed to work, they were never given responsible jobs. It is strange to think that,
as far as we know, most women were happy with that situation.
Today the position is quite different. Women now can vote and choose their own
husbands. In 1970, a law was passed to give them an equal share of property in the case of
divorce, and in the same year the Equal Pay Act gave them the right to get equal payment
with men for work of equal value.
Despite these changes, there is no doubt that there are still great differences in status
between men and women. Many employers seem to ignore the Equal Pay Act. It is also more
difficult for a woman to get promotion than a man does.
There is sex distinction in England although it has not been as serious as it was. More and
more women go out to work, earn more money, get high positions in the society, and live
independently. However , there are two great problems to solve. The first problem is men's
attitude. They always think that women are lower in rank and are the weaker sex. We do not
know exactly how long it will take them to change their mind. And the other problem which is
much more difficult is women's attitude. They should be ready to struggle to change their fate.
41. At the beginning of the 19th century ,___________.
A. British women were better off than today.

C. Women seemed to have almost no rights at all.
B. British women had the right to vote.
D. British women had the right to choose their husbands.

B. In 1970, a law was passed to give British women the right to share property equally in
the case of divorce.
C. The Equal Pay Act gave British women the right to get equal payment with men for
work of equal value.
D. Women cannot get promotion as equal as men.
44. What is men's attitude?
A. They consider women to be equal to them. B. They always look up women.
C. They consider women the stronger sex.
D. They consider women the weaker sex.
45. What should women do to eliminate sex distinction?
A. They should suffer with pleasure.

Fill in each numbered blank with ONE suitable word:
Nonverbal communication, or "body language", is communication by facial expressions,
head or eyes movements, hand signals, and body postures. It can be just as important to

nonverbal signals. For example, take the differences in meaning of a gesture----(48)------- is

very common in the United States: a circle made with the thumb and index finger. To an
American, it means that everything-----(49)----- OK. To Japanese, it means that you are
talking ---(50)------- money. In France, it means that something is worthless. Meanwhile in
Greece, it is an obscene gesture. Therefore, an American could unknowingly offend a Greek
by using that particular hand signal.

Read the passage carefully and choose the correct answer.
Almost every language in the world has dialects and American English is no exception.
At the present time there is an interesting study which is on American speech habits. This
study has shown that different words are frequently used in different parts of the country to
denote the same thing. For example, in the east, Americans use the word "soda" to denote a
soft drink. In some parts of the west, a soft drink is "tonic". Such differences are usually a
source of conversation and sometimes misunderstanding happens.
Speech and life all over the world have often changed. New words are being used when
new discoveries are made and new concepts are formed. Usage determines what is correct and
what is incorrect. Fifty years ago, it was incorrect to say "It's me." But today it is acceptable
simply because most Americans say that instead of "It's I." People change, so language
changes. What is wrong today may be right tomorrow.

Education is another area of social life in which information technology is changing the

learn about their field. Through their computers and the wonders of virtual reality they can
participate in lifelike simulated experiences. Consider the following scenario of the future of
education made possible through developments in information technology.
For children over the age of 10, daily attendance at schools is not compulsory. Some of the
older children attend school only once or twice a weekly to get tutorial support or instruction
from a teacher. For the most part, pupils are encouraged to work online from home. Students
should complete a minimum number of study hour per year; however, they may make up
these hours by studying at home at times that suit their family schedule. They can log on early
or late in the day and even join live classes in other countries. In order to ensure that each
student is learning adequately, computer software will automatically monitor the number
hours a week each student studies on line as well as that student's learning materials and
assessment activities. Reports will be available for parents and teachers. The software can
then identify the best learning activities and conditions for each individual student and
generate similar activities. It can be also identify areas of week achievement and produce
special programs adjusted to the students' needs.

It is a disturbing fact that today many different kinds of wild animal throughout the world
are in danger of extinction. The reasons for this are many and varied, but we must largely
blame pollution, pesticides, the disturbance of the animals’ natural environment and man’s
greed and thoughtlessness.
Industry has grown enormously and it has become common practice for factories to
dispose of waste matter in streams and rivers, causing great loss of life. Modern agricultural
methods include the use of pesticides which effectively control insects classified as pests, but
which also destroy many that are not. An increase in population has meant more building—
and with it the destruction of much of the countryside that provides habitat for wild animals.
To satisfy man’s selfish desires the polar bear in North America is under threat, hunted by
sportsmen; in Borneo and Sumatra the orangutan has become part of a smuggling racket; in
South America the chinchilla is almost extinct because its fur is in demand; whales are
massacred world-wide for the oil and food. These are only a few of the species under threat.
But the problem is receiving world-wide recognition, and some action is being taken. To
name a few examples - sewage pollution in the River Thames has been greatly reduced; and a
ban on trading in some furs has been agreed; and organisations like Friends of the Earth do
valuable work in this deserving cause.
