told that there were many applicants for it, so she prepared herself. When the day came,
she arrived half an hour early. There were six other people waiting to be interviewed.
They looked more confident than her. She began to feel even more nervous. One by one,
the others were called. Each of them came out looking satisfied . Susan was the last one to
be called into the interview room. She thought by then that she had no chance of getting

the job, so she felt relaxed as she walked in; she felt that she had nothing to lose. The three
interviewers were all very serious and they didn’t seem to be interested in her. She forgot

The United Nations (UN), international organization of countries created to
promote world peace and cooperation. The UN was founded after World War II ended in
1945. Its mission is to maintain world peace, develop good relations between countries,
promote cooperation in solving the world’s problems, and encourage respect for human
rights.
The UN is an organization of countries that agree to cooperate with one another. It
brings together countries that are rich and poor, large and small, and have different social
and political systems. Member nations pledge to settle their disputes peacefully, to refrain
from using force or the threat of force against other countries, and to refuse help to any
country that opposes UN actions.
UN membership is open to any country willing to further the UN mission and, abide
by its rules Each country, no matter how large or small, has an equal voice and vote Each
country is also expected to pay dues to support the UN. As of 2004 the UN had 191
members, including nearly every country in the world.
The UN’s influence in world affairs has fluctuated over the years, but the organization
gained new prominence beginning in the 1990s. It was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in
2001. Still, the UN faces constant challenges. It must continually secure the cooperation of

Many years ago, people often said “a woman’s place is in the home ”. But

Americans do not feel that way any more. Today, women make up about 43 percent of the
America labor force. There are about 45 million working women in the United States, and
a large number of them are married women with children. In 1980, for the first time in the
nation’s history there were more working wives than household wives. Looking back to
1940, we can see a picture of some very rapid change. In 1940, only 15 percent of married
women held jobs.
Today, most young women choose to work even when they have young children.
Why do they work? The most important reason is that they need to earn money. But
another reason is that women today are better educated and they have more opportunities
to work in various professions than women had earlier.

D/ Women have better schooling nowadays.
46) The word “ rapid ” in line 5 is nearest in meaning to ______
A/ significant B/ valid C/ quick D/ slow
47) What can be inferred from the passage?

Water polo originated in England during the 1870s and soon became popular in the
United States. It was first played in the Olympic Games as a men’s exhibition sport in
1900. In 1904 it became a men’s medal sport, but only the United States fielded a team. In
1908 it was contested internationally at the Olympics. Over the succeeding decades water
polo became especially popular in Europe.
From approximately 1920 to 1946 the United States departed from the international
rules for water polo by adopting for play a loosely inflated ball that could be gripped in
one hand and carried toward the goal. Opposing players usually attempted to seize the ball
carriers, wrestle them under water and render them helpless from loss of breath. This
rough style of play virtually disappeared by 1946. Since that time traditional water polo

has grown rapidly in North America, especially as a college sport . It is particularly
popular in southern California and other parts of the West.
Women have played water polo since the Game’s early days, but participation was
not widespread until the 1960s. In 1961 United States Water Polo established a national
club championship for women. It has hosted one for men since 1890. Women’s water polo
became an Olympic medal sport at the 2000 Games in Sydney, Australia.
