Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of communication.
Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When there is a language
barrier, communication is accomplished through sign language in which motions stand for letters, words, and ideas.
Tourists, the deaf and the mute have had to resort to this form of expression. Many of these symbols of the whole
words are very picturesque and exact and can be used internationally; spelling, however, cannot. Body language
transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or unintentionally. A wink can be a way of flirting or
indicating that the party is only joking. A nod signifies (biểu thị) approval, while shaking the head indicates a negative
reaction. Other forms of nonlinguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with the
fingertips), signal flags. Morse code (mã Mooc-xơ), and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide, warn,
and instruct people. While verbalization is the most common form of language, other systems and techniques also
express human thoughts and feelings.

It is very important to have healthy teeth. Good teeth help us to chew our food. They also help us to look nice.
How does a tooth go bad? The decay begins in a little crack in the enamel (men răng) covering of the tooth. This
happens after germs and bits of food have collected there then the decay slowly spreads inside the tooth. Eventually,

poison goes into the blood, and we may feel quite ill. How can we keep our teeth healthy? Firstly, we ought to visit our
dentist twice a year. He can fill the small holes in our teeth before they destroy the teeth. He can examine our teeth to
check that they are growing in the right way. Unfortunately, many people wait until they have toothache before they
see a dentist. Secondly, we should brush our teeth with a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day-once
after breakfast and once before we go to bed. We can also use wooden toothpicks to clean between our teeth after a
meal. Thirdly, we should eat food that is good for our teeth and our body: milk, cheese, fish, brown bread, potatoes,
red rice, raw vegetables and fresh fruit. Chocolate, sweets, biscuits and cakes are bad, especially when we eat them
between meals. They are harmful because they stick to our teeth and cause decay.

Small white blossoms appear on the leaves, making the coffee plant look like it’s covered with snow. After a few days,
the Fragrant blossoms (hoa thơm) fall off the plant, and small berries begin to grow. The berries change from green to

dark red in about six months. Underneath the berry skin there is a green bean. When the berries are ripe, they are
picked, and the bean inside is removed. This is the bean that produces coffee. Coffee beans are picked by hand, one by
one. Then they are dried and prepared for market. Coffee beans are shipped all over the world. When they reach their
destination, different coffee beans are blended together to produce different kinds of coffee. Then the beans are
roasted, ground and packaged in air-tight cans and bags to keep the coffee fresh. Different countries prefer different
blends (pha trộn). In Turkey and Arabia, dark coffee is preferred. In the United States and Canada, the coffee is not so
dark. Coffee is also prepared and served differently all over the world. In some places, it is made very thick and strong

Today’s cars are smaller, safer, cleaner, and more economical than their predecessors(tiền nhân), but the car of
the future will be far more pollution-free than those on the road today. Several new types of automobile engines have
already been developed than run on alternative sources of power, such as electricity, compressed natural gas,
methanol, steam, hydrogen, and propane. Electricity, however, is the only zero-emission (emit –v- nhả, thải) option
presently available. Although electric vehicles will not be truly practical until a powerful, compact battery or other
dependable source of current is available, transport experts foresee a new assortment (phân hạng) of electric vehicles
entering everyday life: shorter-range commuter electric cars, three-wheeled neighborhood cars, electric delivery vans,
bikes and trolleys. As automakers work to develop practical electrical vehicles, urban planners and utility engineers
are focusing on infrastructure systems to support and make the best use of the new cars. Public charging facilities will
need to be as common as today’s gas stations. Public parking spots on the street or in commercial lots will need to be
equipped with devices that allow drivers to charge their batteries while they stop, dine, or attend a concert. To
encourage the use of electric vehicles, the most convenient parking in transportation centers might be reserved for
electric cars. Planners foresee electric shuttle buses, trains, buses and neighborhood vehicles all meeting at transit
centers that would have facilities for charging and renting. Commuters will be able to rent a variety of electric cars to

suit their needs: light trucks, one-person three-wheelers, small cars, or electric/gasoline hybrid cars for longer trips,
which will no doubt take place on automated freeways capable of handling five times the number of vehicles that can
be carried by freeway today.
Câu 41: The following electrical vehicles are all mentioned in the passage EXCEPT
A. vans B. trains C. planes D. trolleys(xe đẩy)
Câu 42: The author’s purpose in the passage is to
A. criticize conventional vehicles B. support the invention of electric cars
C. narrate a story about alternative energy vehicles D. describe the possibilities for transportation in the future
Câu 43: The passage would most likely be followed by details about
A. automated freeways B. pollution restrictions in the future
C. the neighborhood of the future D. electric shuttle buses

A pilot cannot fly by sight alone. In many conditions, such as flying at night and landing in dense fog, a pilot
must use radar, an alternative way of navigating (định vị). Since human eyes are not very good at determining speeds
of approaching objects, radar can show a pilot how fast nearby planes are moving. The basic principle of radar is
exemplified (minh họa) by what happens when one shouts in a cave. The echo of the sounds against the walls helps a
person determine the size of the cave. With radar, however, the waves are radio waves instead of sound waves. Radio
waves travel at the speed of light, about 300,000 kilometers in one second. A radar set sends out a short burst of radio
waves. Then it receives the echoes produced when the waves bounce off objects. By determining the time it takes for
the echoes to return to the radar set, a trained technician can determine the distance between the radar set and other
objects. The word “radar”, in fact, gets its name from the term “radio detection and ranging”. Ranging” is the term for
detection of the distance between an object and the radar set. Besides being of critical importance to pilots, radar is
essential for air traffic control, tracking ships at sea, and for tracking weather systems and storms.
Câu 51: What is the main topic of this passage?
A. The nature of radar. B. History of radar. C. Alternatives to radar. D. Types of ranging.

A. argumentative B. explanatory C. humorous D. imaginative
Câu 56: According to the passage, the distance between a radar set and an object can be determined by____
A. the time it takes for a burst of radio waves to produce echoes when the waves bounce off the object
B. the term “ranging” used for detection of the distance between an object and the radar set
C. the time it takes for the radio waves to produce echoes and bounce off the object
D. the time it takes for the echoes produced by the radio waves to return to the radar set

Smallpox (đậu mùa) was the first widespread disease to be eliminated by human intervention (can thiệp). In
May, 1966, the World Health Organization (WHO), an agency of the United Nations was authorized to initiate a
global campaign to eradicate smallpox. The goal was to eliminate the disease in one decade. At the time, the disease
posed a serious threat to people in more than thirty nations. Because similar projects for malaria and yellow fever had
failed, few believed that smallpox could actually be eradicated but eleven years after the initial organization of the
campaign, no cases were reported in the field. The strategy was not only to provide mass vaccinations but also to
isolate patients with active smallpox in order to contain the spread of the disease and to break the chain of human
transmission. Rewards for reporting smallpox assisted in motivating removed from contact with others and treated. At
the same time, the entire village where the victim had lived was vaccinated. By April of 1978 WHO officials
announced that they had isolated the last known case of the disease but health workers continued to search for new
cases for additional years to be completely sure. In May, 1980, a formal statement was made to the global community.
