Winter in Hanoi is my favorite season. In winter, it’s cold and dry. We must wear

the temperature may goes down under 15◦C. Although winter is the coldest season in the
year, we consider it warm season because we only feel warm distinctly in the cold
weather. Moreover, the contrariety between coldness and warmth in winter give us lots of
different emotion. Winter is also a season of many delicious food such as: hot - pot, grill
batata, boil maize, etc. Eating ice - cream in winter is interesting because we can feel
frosty from sense of taste. Specially, in winter, we have Noel festival. Formerly, Noel is a
festival for Catholic. However, nowadays Noel is more popular. It is time for everyone to
go out and admire fantastic beauty of the Noel night.
2/ What are the differences of the weather of North an South in Viet Nam?
Vietnam is a peaceful and beautiful country which is in tropical climate. The
weather of North and South has distinct differences.
North has 4 seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. In Spring, it is warm,
drizzly and humid. The warm climate in Spring is good for trees to bud and for hundred
kinds of flowers to show their colors. In summer, it is sunny and hot. The degree may go
up to 39◦C. The hot - tempered weather make us feel unhealthy and sometimes crazy. In
autumn, it is cool, breezy and rainy. Winter is the coldest in the year because of North East monsoon. It is cold, frosty and dry.

South only has 2 seasons: rainy season and dry season. In dry season, it is sunny
and dry. In rainy season, it is humid because it is rainny much and there are usually lots
of heavy rains.

1/ Write about your worst illness or injury.
When I had a baby, I had a flu. I got this illness from my colleague. I feel tired
because I kept sneezing, had a bad headache, a sore throat, a cough and a high
temperature. Hence, I had to stay in bed all day. Besides, I must take medicines and take
a rest for several days. On these days, my husband took care of me carefully. He spent
much time talking to me and telling me some humorous stories in order to give me
cheerful emotion. Moreover, he himself cooked some foods I like and replaced me on


caring of my baby. At that time, I really wanted to be healthy again so that he did not
worry about me.
2/ What do you often do to stay healthy?
- Go to bed early and wake up early to keep comfortable spirit.
- Have a suitable and sanitary diet such as: little meat and much vegetable to get
enough necessary nutriment and avoid obesity.
- Drink much fruit juice everyday to get many essential vitamins for my body.
- Wash my hands by soap before eating to keep sanitariness.
- Do exercise, walking every day, travel to relax.
- Live optimistically.
- Have a check - up twice a year to detect my diseases early so I can treat them
timely.

3/ What kind of healthy food do you often eat?
- Cereals, fruit and vegetable include many kinds of vitamins, necessary
nutriments and fibrous matter. They also contain mineral nutrients and little calorie. So,
we can avoid obesity. Besides, they are good for our stomach because they are easy to be
digested /’daidzest/
- Yohurt: contains many useful bacteria which stimulate appetite and help us have
a smooth skin.
- Milk and dairy product, and some meat such as: fish, chicken, beef, shrimp give
us protein, calcium.
4/ What are the bad habits for health?
- Smoking cigaretes is one of the bad habits for health because smoking causes
many dangerous deseases such as: lung cancer, , heart desease, pulmonary desease,
sterilization...
- Listening to loud music by headphone make us decrease hearing.
- Skipping breakfast make us not have enough energy for the day so you can feel
very tired.
- Going to bed as soon as we finish a meal make us have a stomache.
- Wearing high heels will hurt our spine.

1/ What form of discipline did your parents use when you were a kid. Do you agree with
their discipline?
When I was 8 years old, I attend to grade four. I was said that I was clever but
lazy. I didn’t study concentrately and usually played truant to go out. Therefor, at the
final exam, I get a bad point in maths. I was afraid that my parents would know my bad
exam result. Then, I said them that I get good points. However, at the parental meeting,
my teacher let my parent know about that. My parents felt ashamed and very angry with
me. Afterwards, my father gave me a spanking for my lies, my mother lectured that the
lie was so bad and I should be honest with my parents. At last, I had to write a review. In
my review, I must show my remorse and promise my advance to them. Since then, I
studied hard in order not to make my parents disappoited. I think my parents associate
harmoniously in educating me. They let me know right from wrong so that I would not
go wrong again.
2/ What are the works that the husband and wife should do together in the family?
In the family, it is important to manage all works suitably. There are some works
which husband and wife shoud do together.
Firstly, they should earning money together in order to make sure that material
lives is always adequate.
Secondly, they should take care of the children together because the children need
their parents’ care and education to develop their body and their mind in balance.
Specially, it make the family have a strong attachment.


Finally, they should together give a big decision because a big decision can
change their life. Husband and wife must discuss to have unanimous solution.
However, in the family, there are some difference between husband’s role and
wife’s role.
Husband shoud share housework with his wife because: there are a lot of
housework, and wife is as busy as husband. Moreover, sharing housework make equality
between husband and wife’s responsibility. Besides, husband should look after the

children, give them discipline if they are wrong, and teaching them some living skills
such as fix smt, obeying rules, determination, etc. Next, husband should have generousity
and understanding about his wife’s characteristics to sympathize her defects.
Wife shoud have knowledge about housework because in the family, wife is
usually major in doing housework. Therefore, happiness of the family depend on her
skillful hands. Besides, wife should teach the children some characteristics such as
patience, tolerance, politeness so they would have good behavior. In addition, wife
should reconcile family’s relationship harmoniously by gentleness and understanding to
make cheeriness in the family. Finally, wife should pay attention to her beauty and
health, always refesh herself in order to be beautiful in husband’s feeling.
3/ What can a husband/a wife do to keep a happy family?
Marriage is the new beginning for husband and wife. And the family’s life always
have many complicated problems for them to solve. It is not easy to keep a happy family.
However, it is possible if husband and wife raising a family together.
- Should be faithful so that they can make reality for the partner.
- Should have patience and generousity to sympathize with the partner’s defects.
- Should be humorous to make cheeriness in the family.
- Manage money suitably to make sure the family lives is adequate and to save
money for necessary situations.
- Should refresh themselves and spend time making some romantic and
unexpected events so they can have unforgetable time. As a consequence, their love is
deeper and deeper.
4/ Should parents hit their children when they don’t obey? Why? Why not?


In my opinion, parents should not hit their children when they don’t obey. There
are several reasons for it.
- The worst risk of hitting the children is that parents could hurt the children’s
body, specially serious injuries such as: bone fracture, leg or arm fracture and nervous
hurt.

- Hitting the children / Caning /keining/ may make severe psychological wounds
in the children. Their self - respect may be hurt. They also may be timorous, and get
depression. So they restrain their desire and may be reserved in sharing their feelings
with parents. Then, parents don’t understand their thought, that make distance between
children and parents.
- Caning make the chilren close with violence because they learn the way to solve
everything by violence from their parents. Some children will be used to caning and are
not scared to caning. They will be more stubborn
- Hitting the children / Whipping /’wiping/ only make them stop bad action
momentarily but don’t help them know right from wrong so that they would go wrong
again. Some better ways are lecture or having a informal conversation with them, that
leads to a good result and avoid violence.

Lesson 4: Giving opinion
1/ All motorbike rider should be require to wear helmet?
Yes, because of some reasons:
- Helmets have protective effect so they will protect us agaist/from brain injury
when they get road accident.
- Helmets also have the effect like a hat. They can help us shelter from the rain
and shade from the sun.
- Some types of helmet are very beatiful, so they can help us look better.
2/ Smoking should not be allowed indoors in public places?
Yes and there are some several reasons for it.
- Smoking is harmful for our health. Smoking causes many serious deseases such
as: lung cancer, heart dease, bronchitis, sterilization,etc.


- Smoking make smoker to be an opium addiction. Therefore, he will spend much
money on cigarettes. As a consequence, his income is decreased.
- Smoking sometimes leads to a big fire such as: house fire or forest fire, that

make a serious damage for the family and society.
- Smoking causes many environmetal problems because it give hazardous rubbish
out evironment. For example, cigarette ash can not be used again and they need many
years to disintegrate.

I never think it is OK to steal. Although we can have some suitable reasons, we
must not steal. Theft in any situation is guilty and evil. Moreover, if we make serious
result, wea are taken to prison. After that, our life will have many bad changes. For


example, people don’t want to be close to us and it is difficul for us to find a job because
no bosses want us to enter his company.
2/ Is it acceptable to kill a person?
Yes, in dangerous situation for us. For istance, a man want to kill us or do smt which can
kill us.
3/ What are some popular teenage crimes? What are some reasons for increasing teenage
crimes?
Some popular teenage crimes:
- Killing other people to rob money, jewelry, personal property.
- Theft, shoplifting
- Fraud to get money, to appropriate personal property.

- Opposition to people who are on active service.
Several reasons for increasing teenage crime:
- Lack of caring and education from the family. For example, parents only pay
attention to earning money and don’t have time to take care of their children. The
children are left to do whatever they want. Besides, some parents pamper/indulge their
children too much or usually hit them, hurt their self - respect.
- The way of school educate the children only give discipline, don’t pay attention
to personality, living skills, knowledge about the law, don’t help the children know about

right and wrong.
- Their family don’t combine with school and society in education the teenages.
- A result of illiteracy.
- unwholesome living environment. For instance, some people who live closely
with the children induce them to do bad things or have bad behavior.
- loose management from local government.
- Having sereve/bad psychology wounds because of parents’ divorce. The
children may be disgusted with the broken family and then they have evil thought about
society.

1/ When/At what age do Vietnamese people often start dating? Where do they often
date?
Vietnamese often start dating at their twenties. At this age, they are emotional so
that they are easy to be fall in love with a opposite sex. Many people at this age have a
the first love. For them, love is romantic, passionate and giving body and soul to the
other.
They usually date at some places of entertainment such as parks, cinema,
restaurants, cafe,etc. They often creat unexpected and romantic events and give presents

for the partner. They also talk about their friends, humorous stories, praises, sweet things.
2/ Why do people say: Love is blind
- We normally can’t explain why we love someone.
- When we love, we do not care about some defects of our partners.
- We do smts which other people consider stupid or too romantic.

- faithfulness to make me believe in his honesty.
- have responsibility for the family so he always pay attention to me, to family life
and raising our children.

4/ Why do many people get divorced these days?
Divorce is the major concern of many families and there are several reasons for
this issue.


- First of all, divorce is a result of unfaithfulness. For instance, husband or wife
has an external affair with somebody. Hence, they do not pay attention to the family and
raising the children. Then, it leads to contradiction between husband and wife.
- Another reason for divorce is low finacial status. For example, the lack of
money causes the poor living standard and depressed spirit. Thus, they usually blame the
responsibility onto the other that may lead to disputation and conflict between spouses.
- The last and the most important reason is selfishness. For example, husband or
wife does not share feeling with each other and only think about himself or herself. As a
consequence, they do not sympathize with the other’s defects. Inconclusion, the three 3
main causes of divorce are unfaithfulness, low financial status and selfishness.
5/ Do you believe in love at first sight?
I do not believe in love at first sight. I will explain it in a simple way:
- We know that apperance and personality in many situation are not suitable. For
example, a good - looking person may have bad behavior or a plain person may have a
good personality. So, our feelings at first sight can disappear when we understand about

them.
- Love need more than a sight. Although love is a strong affection, it is patience
and understanding. So we must have time to understand somebody’s characteristics.
However, I do not deny the first feeling doen not become true love. Our first emotion
might to become a love if we understand the good characteristics of the other, have a
caring and sencerity.
6/ What do you think is the most important thing for a marriage to stay together?
To begin a marriage, husband and wife need a sencere love. But to stay together
until old age, they must have forgiveness to sympathize with the other’s defects and
mistakes. No one is perfect so they can get wrong several times in their life and need to
be sympathized from the partners. Moreover, if they have forgiveness, every family’s
troubles would be solve in gentleness anf they always keep cheeriness in the family.

1/ What is the most serious environmental problem in Vietnam? Give example and give
solution.
The most serious environmental problem in Vietnam is water pollution, specially
lakes and rivers are being polluted by industrial waste dumping and household rubbish,
waste water from the families. For example, the pollution of To Lich river has cause from
waste dumping from families and factories which do not have safe disposal. Another
example is pollution of Thi Vai river which is caused by toxic waste dumping of Vedan
in Dong Nai. Vedan factory broke the law and dump hazardous rubbish out Thi Vai rivers
without safe disposal.
The water pollution has bad influence to our health and to development of society.
In my opinion, we need some solution to solve this problems:
- Reduce the water waste by saving water use in the families, by application high
techno in manufacture and have safe disposal system for factories.
- Reuse the water waste by making biogas from industrial waste and family’s
water waste. Biogas is used in cooking in many families, and also is a kind of fertilizer
for some trees.
- Recycle by using the water waste for trees without make environmental
pollution.
- Having passed law to control the amount of dumping by factories.

2/ What is the most serious environmental problem in Hanoi? Give example and solution.


In my opinoin, the most serious environmental in HN is air pollution. Exhaust
from industrial park and vehicles such as motorbikes, cars is filling the air with carbon
dioxide (CO2). And dust from building/construction sites and transport is also a cause for
air pollution in HN. For example, in Khuat Duy Tien street, Pham Hung street, Le Van
Luong, Kim Giang, Nguyen Trai, the air pollution is the worst and is increasing. Dusty
concentration is as from 3 times to 11 times as standard.
The air pollution in HN have serious influence to people’s health (cause lung
desease), economy and climate change. So we need some useful solution to solve.
- Plant many trees to reduce dusty concentration because trees can absorb dust.
- Must cut down on the use of vehicles by encouraging people to use public
transportation or bicycle. All vehicles must have special filters to reduce their exhaust.
- Move industrial park to far from the city.
- Government must have many laws to ensure that factories use filters to reduce
the pollution coming out of their smokestacks.
3/ Why is 3R important? Give 3 ways to recycle waste.
3R is important because of many reasons:
- We can save energy because less energy is used in daily lives and to
manufactured new products.
- We can save natural resources such as: woods, water, minerals
- We can prevent the pollution because we can reduce dumping waste out the
environment.
3 ways to recycle waste:
- Recycle your remaining paper products such as glossy magazines, printed flyers,
glossy newspaper Ads, envelopes, and computer printing paper, phone books, paper
packaging and old letters... We can use them to make bags, craft items, to pack the wares
and so on.
- Recycle plastic products by using it and my imagination to make some beautiful

and useful things.
- Give my old computers, printers or cell phones to some else who may need
them.


Lesson 8: Travel and tourism
1/ If you were given one week free time and a lot of money, where would you go on
holiday?
If I were given a week free time and a lot of money, I would go to Da Lat - the
city of Eternal Spring - on my holiday. There are several reasons for my choice.
- At first, Da Lat have a temparate climate all year around which make me feel
more relaxed and healthier.
- Secondly, Da Lat is famous for its many historical sites, cutural sites and scenic
sites such as: Bao Dai Summer Palace, Truc Lam pagoda, Linh Son pagoda, Domain De
Marie church, Valley of Love, Prenn fall, Cam Ly fall, Xuan Huong lake, Lake of
Sorrow, Gold stream, pine forest, and so on.
- Finally, Da Lat has many kinds of beautiful flowers and delicious foods. The
local claim that Da Lat is Vietnam’s botanical garden in the middle of a pine forest.
Many beautiful flowers such as roses, orchids, hydrangeas / haidreindzơ/, fuchsias /fju:
Shơ/, white narcicuss and many fruit, vegetable come from this part of the country.
2/ Talk about your most memorable trip.
One of the most memorable trip in my life was to Sapa with my husband for 2
days on New Year vacation in 2010.
On the first day, we arrives Sapa at 7.30 a.m when it was very nice as it was cold
and slightly sunny, the fog covered the top of moutains which was really amazing. After
that, we had a delicious breakfast at a restaurant near the church and took a stroll around
the town with eager feeling. In the afternoon, we sauntered to Rose Valley. It was a
wonderful place which had about one million rosebushes with a mass of colour and many
houses on stilts overlooking Lao Chai valley. Sweet fragrance of roses created a subtle
charm for this resort. Therefor, we felt to be lose into the heaven and never got tired of

looking at wonderful lanscape. Also, we took lots of photos there. In the evening, before
eating baked food, we had taken a spa bath, that made us relaxed and comfortable.
On the second day, we visited Ham Rong moutain, an admirable beauty. The most
famous attraction of HR was many types of beautiful flowers, specially wild orchids. The
highest location of HR was cloudy yard overlooking Sapa town and Fansipan moutain. It
was wrapped by bobbing clouds. In the afternoon, we came back Lao Cai city.


After leaving Sapa, this area put/left great impression about its natural beauty and
cutural characteristics. In the next few years, if we have a chance, we surely return there.
3/ What are some places in Hanoi that are worth visiting?
a. Old Quarter
- Firstly, it is Old Quarter which has unique/original architecture includes the old
houses and many pagodas (Cau Dong, Kim Co, Thai Cam), temples (Ma May, Ba Chua,
Nhan Noi), historical sites.
- Secondly, it is famous for its unique cultural characteristics with a lot of
traditional trade villages such as silk trade, jewelry, cotton products, drums products and
so on. Coming there, tourists can discovery cultural characteristics of Ha Noi in the old
days.
- Finally, it is a symbol a Thang Long history, culture and architecture in bygone
days. Specially, it express Hanoian’s soul, crystallise quintessence from every areas in
Viet Nam.
b. Temple of Literature
- Firstly, it is first national university of Viet Nam which reveals the Vietnamese
spirit of study in the past. Throughout its hudreds years of activity in the feudal,
thousands of Vietnamese scholar graduated from this university.
- Secondly, it is such amazing place in Ha Noi. Temple of Literature is not only a
temple but also a huge compound with many beautiful gates, courtyard, museum and so
on. Some attractions include Turtles Steles, Well of Heaven Clarity, Lake of Literature
and Constellation of Literature Pavillion.

Lesson 9: Helping the poor

What are the 2 most effective way to reduce poverty in Vietnam?
In my oinion, the 2 most effective ways to reduce porverty in VN are
infrastructure development and educational improvement.


- Government must develop infrastructure such as school, public buildings, roads,
hospitals and so on in order to give poor people a safer environment in which to live. It
allows them to work more efficiently. Moreover, infrastructure development will attract
foreign investors so that many people will have jobs. Hence, they can earning money to
raise the living standards for themselves and their family. Also, they can avoid society
evils - one of the factors make poverty.
- Government must improve education to enhance people’s knowledge. Then,
they can find better jobs with high salary or they can have good business knowledge or
can themselves find the private ways to get out poverty.
