FOR HOME AND GARDEN

[EXTRA]
4 MONTHS OF
CALENDARS
With tips to inspire
you through
the winter

I love that first brisk, truly wintry
day. It reminds me that it’s time for
family, friends, festivity, food, and
all other good things the holiday
season will bring. In January,
I’m eager to set my resolutions in
motion—and organization always
seems to make it to the top of the
list. This year we’re sending you a
special issue to enjoy throughout

the winter season, from holiday
preparation in November to
spring planning in February. We’ve also included foldout
calendars for each month, which will certainly help us
with plans to organize our homes, offices, and lives.
Visit us online and in the store, and tell us about your
resolutions for your home and garden. I hope this
holiday season brings you joy, contentment, and
a renewed spirit for the New Year!

UNWIND & DESIGN Address Plaques
Invite friends over
for a fun-filled
afternoon making

a unique
address plaque.
Good To Know
For a cottage look, you could
hang this address plaque
from a garden gate using
picture wire, or prop it up
on a potting bench.

Step 1: Paint a thick
basecoat on the front
and sides of the board
using a foam brush.
Allow 15 minutes for
paint to dry. Spray on
a clear topcoat in a
well-ventilated area or
outdoors. Allow 5 to 10
minutes for paint to dry.
Step 2: Remove the tiles
from the backing, and
lay out a border design
for the address plaque.
Step 3: Using a glue
gun, affix the tiles to the
board. (Add the glue to
the board, rather than
to the tile, to prevent
messy glue strings.)
Step 4: Secure each

house number using
a hammer and the
hardware included with
the numbers.
Step 5: Attach a picture
hanger to the back of
the board at the top
and the bottom for
added stability.

Pinching pennies? Bringing
your bath into this century
doesn’t have to mean
breaking the bank.

The secret to getting a custom look
for less is in the details. Dressing up
the existing cabinetry gives this vanity
an updated look without construction
costs. New wallpaper adds texture
to the walls.
1 Accessories are the most noticeable
detail, so they’re not the place to skimp.
The same light fixture and towel ring, as
well as similar switch plates, were used
in both the steal and splurge versions.
2 Replacing the existing faucet
changes the look of the vanity without
replacing the countertop and sink.
This sophisticated lever-handle faucet
resembles a historic water pump.
3 Painting a warm mocha glaze over
the ivory-colored doors adds depth
and personality, and it’s an inexpensive
alternative to buying new cabinetry.
Aged-bronze mushroom knobs
coordinate with the new faucet and
continue the antique feel.

Have more room in your
budget? Take the same
style a step further.
Personalized upgrades and
custom construction can produce
a one-of-a-kind vanity. Special-order
cabinetry, a new sink and countertop,
and a tile backsplash create this
signature look. Premium wall paint in
a muted taupe shade provides a nice
backdrop for the accessories and tile.
1 A harlequin-pattern tile backsplash
gives the vanity character while keeping

a classic look; bronze accent tiles
complement the new accessories.
The coordinating mirror was installed
with a tile border that ties the mirror
and the backsplash together.
2 Topping the vanity is a bone-colored
under-mounted sink and a durable
earth-tone quartz countertop. Changing
the countertop made it possible to
accommodate a distinctive widespread
faucet in a striking bronze finish.
3 The new high-end cabinets—featuring
pre-glazed doors and classic rectangular-
styled door panels—contribute to the
bath’s upscale appearance. Antique-finish
pulls complement the bronze accessories
and enhance the elegant look.

Bath Budget Basics
As you’re deciding how much to invest, consider these tips.
when it pays to
renovate
■ Your vanity is poorly constructed.
Buying new cabinets may be better
than trying to work with existing ones,
especially if the materials are worn or you
have to contend with water damage.
■ You’re not happy with the floor
plan. Starting from scratch can be the
best option to get the layout you need.
■ You want to keep up with the
neighborhood. If most homes in
your area feature high-end finishes,
prospective home buyers may expect
them in your home.
when it pays to
update
■ You want to keep your existing floors.
Because flooring often doesn’t extend
under the vanity, changing the cabinetry’s
size may reveal unfinished floors. It’s safer
to update your existing vanity.
■ You already have a neutral base.
Timeless shades of white and beige are

easier to update by simply accessorizing.
■ You don’t want to outshine the
neighborhood. If most homes in your
area haven’t been updated, or were built
with similar finishes, you may not get a full
return on a splurge when it’s time to sell.

A simple shelf for
frames personalizes
the room. Here’s how
to make your own.
Step 1: Determine the desired
height for the ledge, and lightly
mark a line on the wall. Locate
and mark the wall studs on the line.
Step 2: Using 2-inch screws, attach
the nailing strip (1 x 2 board) to the
wall at the stud locations, with
the 1
1
⁄2-inch side against the wall.
Step 3: Attach the ledge (1 x 3
board) to the nailing strip with glue
and 4d nails, so that the
3
⁄4-inch
side is flush against the wall.
Step 4: Attach the stop moulding
to the face of the ledge with glue

and brads; the bottom of the
moulding should be flush with
the bottom of the ledge face.
Step 5: Attach cove moulding
with glue and brads to the
corner where the nailing strip
and ledge meet.
Step 6: Fill all holes, and sand
smooth. Prime, paint, and let dry.

Shape up
your entry in
three steps.
1
Define the area.
To set their entryway
apart from the surrounding
space, the homeowners chose
crimson accents and beaded-
board paneling painted in
a warm shade of ivory. Any
type of wall treatment or
color scheme can define an
area for a special purpose,
such as organization.
2
Consider unexpected

items. Designed for
use in a garage, the track
system on the lowest level
holds movable hooks that
are perfect for hanging heavy
items, such as textbook-filled
backpacks. The homeowners
also used other garage
accessories on the track,
including two bins to contain
small items and a mesh basket
to hold sports equipment.
3
Incorporate multiple
storage solutions.
Along with the track system,
the homeowners added a
boot tray on the floor and two
rows of hooks on different
levels. The upper-level hooks
are attached to a painted
1 x 4 board. The lower-level
hooks on an adjacent wall, as
well as the track system, are
at suitable heights for kids.

This plan is for three shelving units.
Adjust the quantities and dimensions
as needed. Cut and label the parts as
needed, using the Cut List as a guide
and adjusting for fit.
Step 1: Cut all pieces, and lay
out the shelving units as shown
in Figure 1.
a. Rip the entire sheet of plywood
into four strips measuring 11
1

wide x 96 inches long.
b. From the strips of plywood,
cut nine pieces to 30

c. From the 1 x 2, cut three
pieces to 30

attachment bars.
d. Sand and then apply one coat
of primer and one coat of paint to
all pieces. Allow each coat to dry.

e. Lay out the ends where the
shelves will be attached per Figure 1.
On the ends, mark the locations of
the shelves and the placements
of the drilled holes (see Figure 2).
Step 2: Assemble the shelving

units as shown in Figure 2.
a. Using a #10 countersink bit,
predrill the holes for the screws.
Drill the holes so that the head of
each screw will be
1
⁄4 inch below
the surface of the plywood.
b. Attach the shelves to the ends
using glue and screws.
c. Apply glue to the end of a
3

dowel, and place it into the recess
to cover the screw. Use a handsaw
to cut off the excess dowel, and
sand smooth with the face of the
plywood. Repeat for each screw.
d. Using glue and nails, affix the
attachment bar to the underside
of the top shelf and the ends.
Step 3: Finish the shelving units.
a. Fill the exposed edges of the
plywood using wood filler. Let dry,
and sand smooth.

Good To Know
This project also would be
perfect in a bedroom. For a
unique look, consider installing

one or more shelving units
to serve as a nightstand
or side table.
b. Apply a coat of paint to the filled
edges of the plywood, and let dry.
Then apply a coat of paint to the
entire shelving unit, and let dry.
c. Locate wall studs, and attach the
units to the studs by drilling through
each attachment bar using 2
1

screws (be sure to use a level). Space
multiple units with a 9-inch gap
between them. Each shelf can hold
no more than 60 pounds. Note: Use

DECORATING Holiday Entertaining
Trimminga small
space takes ingenuity,
and this chic urban
loft is a huge holiday
success. “I can see my
entire apartment from
any corner, so I wanted
decorations that unify
the space,” says this
homeowner. By decorating her apartment with gold
ornaments, sparkling lights, and tabletop trees, she
set the stage for a hip, yet elegant, holiday gathering.
Whatever the size or location of your home,
you can bring a similar style to your décor. For
example, using ornaments of one color on a tree
allows for variation of shapes, sizes, and textures
without causing a visual overload. Let this space
inspire you to create your own glittering holiday
home—whether you’re surrounded by bright

city lights or twinkling stars.
