The Five Themes of Geography
The story of people is also the story of
where they live. When scientists talk about
Earth, they think about five themes, or
main ideas.
Location
Every thing on Earth has
its own place.
Place
Every place has features
that make it different from
other places.

Looking at Earth
The shape of Earth is
shown best by a globe.
A globe is a model of
our planet.
On a map of the world, you can see all
the land and water at once. A map is a
flat drawing that shows where places are.
Name the seven continents and four
oceans you see on the map.
Much of the world is
covered by large areas
of water called oceans.
A continent is one of
seven main land areas
on Earth.

What is your address?
I5
Your Address
You live on the continent of North
America in a country called the United
States. Your address names the city and
state in which you live.

View from Above
Does your neighborhood have a school,
a grocery store, a library, a fire station, a
park, and a bank? These are places that
people share in a neighborhood. You can
learn about a neighborhood by looking
at a photograph.
How does a photograph taken from
above help you study a neighborhood?

You can also learn about a neighborhood
by looking at a map. Mapmakers draw
symbols to help you find places on the map.
A map symbol is a small picture or shape
that stands for a real thing. The map title
tells you what the map shows.
How is this map like the photograph?

How is it different?

Reading Maps
Maps are used to show
many different kinds of
information. This is a map
of the United States. On

this map, you can use the
map key to find our national
capital, or our country’s
capital. You can also use the
key to find each state’s
capital and borders. A border
is a line that shows where a state
or country ends.
Locate the state of North Carolina
on the map. What is the state
capital? Name the states that
border North Carolina.
An inset map is a
smaller map within
a larger one.
