includes a CD-ROM to make printing the books quick and easy.
The workbook/CD-ROM set also includes four pages of
reproducible upper and lower case letters, blends, digraphs, and
diphthong cards for extra letter-sound practice. You can also use
the cards to make simple words.
For more fun, have students color the black and white pages
while they practice saying the words with each letter/sound,
blend, digraph, or diphthong. Students may also take these
Mini-Books home for practice and fun with their homework
partner.

Alphabet Activities
• Trace letters (upper and lower case).
• Match upper case letter cards to lower
case letter cards.
• Circle words that begin with the
same letter.
• Match words to pictures that begin with
the same letter.
• Write a word on the board, and leave
out the initial letter/sound. Have children
fill in the missing initial letter/sound in
the word.
• Create a letter web. Have children write
or glue pictures of words beginning with
a selected letter of the alphabet in a web.
Example:
• Group pictures of words that begin with
the same letter (e.g., bat, ball, and boy).
• Have children create their own
alphabet books.
• Cover tables/desks in cling wrap. Have
students use shaving cream to trace upper
and lower case letter shapes in the cream.
Children can smooth out the cream, and
write new letters. Also, have students say
the letter’s sound as they do this task.

• Create a word wall. Have children tell
you words that begin with each letter/
sound of the alphabet. Write the words
on note cards, and tape them to the
word wall under the appropriate letter.
• Go for a “Sound Search.” Have children
go for a search around their classroom
for objects that begin with the sound of
a certain letter. Record what the children
find on the board. You can make this
activity more exciting by putting the
letters of the alphabet in a grab bag.
Children reach in the grab bag and pull
out a letter to begin their search.
• Go through books and have children
listen/watch for words that begin with a
particular letter of the alphabet.
• Put on a Show and Tell for alphabet
letters. Have children bring something
with them to class that begins with a
particular letter of the alphabet.
• Count down the first 26 days of school
with an alphabet countdown. Select
one letter of the alphabet each day
(starting with A and going to Z). Focus
all reading books, play activites, snacks,
etc., around that letter. For example,
“Hh” day may include eating hot dogs
for lunch and playing Hide-and-Go-Seek
at recess. After you have completed

each letter of the alphabet, have an
Alphabet Celebration.
