Sore throat
Most sore throats are caused by an infection which treatment with antibiotics
cannot cure. But with simple remedies the patient normally gets better in 4 or 5
days.
Tonsillitis (= viêm họng), however, usually starts with a sore throat which
causes pain on swallowing. With children - and some adults - there may be a fever
and the patient is obviously not feeling well. It may be possible to see white spots
on the back of the throat. The neck may also swell, both of which are the normal
response to infection.
Sometimes a sore throat may occur with the common cold and with influenza
there may be dryness of the throat, pain on coughing and loss of voice.
Treatment:

Aspirin: To help relieve the pain on swallowing and (if there is one ) the
fever. Use aspirin tablets dissolved in water so that the patient
can gargle before swallowing. Repeat the treatment every 4
hours.
Drink: Encourage the patient to drink plenty.
Food: Food should not be forced on a patient who does not want to eat.
Steam: If there is pain in the throat on coughing, breathing in steam may
help.
Children:
Young children, who may not be able to gargle, should be given aspirin
dissolved in water every 4 hours in the right dose for their age.
At 1 year: A single junior aspirin.
At 5 years: Half an adult aspirin.
At 8 years: One whole adult aspirin.
When to see the doctor:
If the sore throat is still getting worse after 2 days.
If the patient complains of earache.
If the patient's fever increases.
If the patient or parent is very worried.

Birth of the computer
Most people think of computers as very modern inventions, products of our
new technological (0). But actually the idea for a computer (46)
worked out over 2 centuries ago by a man (47) Charles Babbage.

Babbage was born (48) 1791 and grew up to be a brilliant
mathematician. He drew up plans for several calculating machines (49) he
called "engines". But despite the fact that he (50) building some of these
he never finished any of them. Over the years people have argued (51) his
machines would ever work. Recently, however, the Science Museum in London
has finished building (52) engine based on one of Babbage's
designs. (53) has taken six years to complete and more (54) four
thousand parts have been specially made. Whether it works or not, the machine
will be on show at a special exhibition in the Science Museum (55)
remind people of Babbage's work.

Child education in english hospitals
Surprisingly, no one knows how many children receive education in English
hospitals, still less the content or quality of that education. Proper records are just
not kept.
We know that more than 850.000 children go through hospital each year,
and that every child of school age has a legal right to continue to receive
education while in hospital. We also know there is only one hospital teacher to
every 1.000 children in hospital.
Little wonder the latest survey concludes that the extent and type of
hospital teaching available differ a great deal across the country. If found that half
the hospitals in England which admit children have no teacher. A further quarter
have only a part-time teacher. The special children's hospitals in major cities do
best; general hospitals in the country and holiday areas are worst off.
From this survey, one can estimate that fewer than 1 in 5 children have
some contact with a hospital teacher - and that confact may be as little as 2 hours
a day. Most children interviewed were surprised to find a teacher in hospital at all.

They had not been prepared for it by parents of their own school. If there was a
teacher they were much more likely to read books and do maths or number work:
without a teacher they would only play games.
Reasons for hospital teaching range from preventing a child failing behind
to keeping a child busy, and the latter is often all the teacher can do. The position
and influence of many teachers was summed up when parents spoke of them as
"the library lady" or just "the helper".
Children tend to rely on school friends to keep in touch with school work.
Several parents spoke of requests for work being ignored or refused by the school.
Once back at school, children rarely get extra teaching, and are told to catch up as
best they can. Many short-stay child-patients catch up quickly. But schools do
very little to ease the anxiety about failing behind expressed by many of the
children interviewed.
1. The writer of this article points out that
A. Every child in hospital receives some teaching.
B. Not enough is known about hospital teaching.
C. Hospital teaching is of poor quality.
D. Many children pass through hospital each year.
2. Hospital teaching is provided
A. For the whole of the usual school day.
B. In every children's hospital in the country.
C. For a small propertion of children.
D. By full-time teachers.
3. Most children interviewed in hospital
A. Successful in getting the co-operation of parents.
B. Unable to get help from other hospital staff.
C. Unable to provide a proper teaching program.
D. In a position of great influence in the hospital.
5. Some children in hospital are able to keep up with their school work because
A. The nurses try to teach them.

B. Their friends help them to do so.
C. Teachers from the school come to the hospital.
D. Their parents bring them books from the library.

Holidays that don't cost the earth
