Topic 1 (Nguyễn Tuấn Anh) DESCRIBE YOUR FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL AS A
CHILD
My first day at school is a day I will never forget. I went to school for the first
time when I was only seven years old but I can recollect all the happenings on that day.
The day before my school opened, my father asked me to keep my books ready.
The next morning, I woke up very early. Then I bathed and dressed myself
neatly. Then my father took me to school. In the school I saw a number of new boys
and girls waiting in the corridor. They were all like me in the school for the first time. I
was then taken to a classroom.
For sometime, I found myself helpless, but it did not take much time for me to be
friendly with other students. After two periods, they began to tease me, I was much
annoyed. During the recess time, all my classmates gathered around me. One pulled my
shirt while another pulled my ear. A third boy challenged for a fight. I was frightened
and began to cry. My teacher seeing me crying came to me and asked me why I was
crying. When I told him my “story”, the teacher punished the boys, and from that time
onwards they stopped bullying me. We had no lessons on the first day. But lessons
started from the second day. I was really happy to be in school on the first day. It was
indeed a memorable day.
Topic 2: Your favourite hobby and why you enjoy it
Everybody has his or her own hobby. For me, my favorite hobby is reading
books.
My father was not only a writer but a researcher as well. He had a great
collection of books on many fields: literature, science, art, fiction and non-fiction. After
his death, I inherited the most valuable treasure which has been preserved carefully up
to now.
As I have a large collection of books of my own now, I usually spend hours
reading and thinking about facts described in each kind of books. Sitting comfortably in

an arm-chair in the library with a book open on my knee, I recall my father who was
absorbed in his reading, perusing the poems of John Keats, William Words Worth,
Chateaubriand and Lamartine. I still hear his sonorous voice reciting rhythmical lines of
poems in Kim Van Kieu’s story while his face was radiant with ecstasy and raptures.
Through books I see many countries rise and fall. Kings and Presidents pass
before my eyes and I can follow the history of nations. Each book has a story to tell me
of remote countries and strange people.
I am greatly indebted to books indeed. For me a good book is not only a true
companion but also a well-experienced teacher guiding me through my life. It has the
miracle to relieve my suffering and my hardship and reveal to me strange and new
horizons.
Reading books broadens my mind and improves my knowledge. Instead of
indulging myself in futile entertainments, I am often keen on reading books which are
always a source of comfort and relief to me and I am determined to preserve my
father’s valuable treasure for my posterity.
In a few words, the reading of books contributes to the moral and intellectual
formation of a man’s personality.
Topic 3. How to be happier?
Happiness is something everyone wants to achieve. While on the surface
people may seem to be looking for money, recognition, or other things, what they
actually seek is happiness. Unfortunately, many people never reach the level of
happiness they desire.
While I can’t claim to be the happiest person in the world, I do learn something
about it. So here I’d like to share 20 ways to find happiness in your life.
But, before we start, we should agree on something: our happiness is our
responsibility. Your happiness is yourresponsibility. Don’t blame outside condition or
other people if you’re not happy. While things around you could change and go bad, it
is you who decide how you will respond to them. You candecide to be happy.
With that in mind, here are 20 ways to find happiness in life:
1. Stop comparing yourself with others

Comparing yourself with others won’t do you any good. You will either feel
proud when you are above, or feel jealous and frustrated when you are below. None of
them brings true happiness. So stop comparing yourself with others and simply be your
best.
2. Count your blessings
There are so many things we should be grateful for, but we often forget them.
When you realize how blessed you are, you will certainly be happier.
We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t
have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.
You can start with some simple things we take for granted.
3. Find your inner voice
To find true happiness, you must first find your inner voice. Slow down and take
some quiet time for soul searching. What will make your life meaningful? What is true
happiness for you? By knowing what your heart says, it will be easier for you to align
with it.
4. Reconnect with your childhood dreams
Your childhood dreams can give you clues about your true calling. So discover
them and reconnect with them. Get them back into your life. Childhood dreams are
important.
5. Help someone
Giving is an essential key to happiness. While we often think that we will be
happier when we receive, the truth is we are happier when we give. This is also one of
the most difficult things to apply.
You can apply this by finding someone in need and lending a helping hand. The person
could be your family, friend, or even a stranger. You could also donate to a charity.
Happiness is like a kiss…you must share it to enjoy it.
6. Spend more quality time with your loved ones
Relationships give us happiness more than any material in the world. So spend
more quality time with your loved ones. In such moments, be sure that you devote your
attention to them. Divided attention (with your work, for example) will decrease the

quality of the time.
There is only one happiness in this life, to love and be loved.
7. Apply the five languages of love
Love is an important way to happiness, and the five languages of love is a helpful
concept to help you apply love. By understanding yours and others’ languages of love,
you will be able to build better relationships.
8. Appreciate nature
The beauty of the nature can give you peace. Go out and see how beautiful the nature is.
Watch how the birds sing and the sun shines, and let you be happy once again.
9. Pray or meditate
This is one of the most effective ways to calm your mind and get inner happiness.
When you feel overwhelmed, a session of praying or meditation could help you clear
your mind.
10. Know yourself
You will be happier if you understand who you are. Taking personality tests or
drawing a simple life map could help you recognize who you are.
11. Say thank you
Sometimes we are so accustomed to people around us that we forget to thank to
them. So take a little time to do that.
12. Smile
Smiling is a very simple thing to do, and yet it has great effect. There mere act of
smiling can brighten your otherwise dark day.
13. Listen more than you speak
You will feel happier not only by understanding yourself, but also by
understanding the people around you. One simple way to do that is by listening more
than you speak. Try to understand what the other person means before speaking out
your thoughts.
14. Stop judging others
Judging others will give you bad feeling toward them and there’s nothing good
about that. Instead, you should look at the positive side of them. Sometimes it’s easier

to see the others’ weaknesses, but looking at the positive side will brighten their day
and your day.
15. Focus on what you can control
Trying to change things beyond your control will only frustrate you. Recognize
what you can and can’t control, and focus solely on the things you can control. For
instance, you can’t change how people around you behave, but you can change yours.
So focus on changing your own behavior instead of changing theirs.
There is only one way to happiness and that is to cease worrying about things
which are beyond the power of our will.
16. Forgive yourself
Have you done mistakes in the past? We could be intimidated by our past
mistakes that we can no longer live to our full potential. But you aren’t perfect, and
neither is anyone else. So forgive yourself and release the burden.
17. Forgive others
Besides forgiving yourself, you should also forgive other people who did wrong
to you. Not forgiving them will only hurt you. Again, you should release the burden so
that you can find happiness.
To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love. In return, you will receive untold
peace and happiness.
18. Accept yourself
You may have some personality traits that you don’t like. For instance, perhaps
you are an introvert and you wish you are an extrovert. Or you wish you were born in a
different background. This is one thing you can’t control, so just accept yourself as you
are. You are unique, and that’s something you should be grateful for.
19. Know how to deal with problems
Problems will always come your way, so your happiness depends not on whether
or not you have problem, but on how good you deal with them. Knowing how to stay
calm and how to overcome failure will be helpful.
20. Be a promise keeper
You will find happiness if you stay true to your heart and one way to do that is by

being a promise keeper. The more you keep your promise, the more you will be aligned
with your conscience and the happier you will be.
While I’m still far from perfect in applying them, I can attest how these ideas increase
my happiness.
Topic 4 (Đỗ Văn Hanh). Describe the best friend .
In our daily activities we often get in touch with the others and from these relations we
meet some people whose interests, characteristics and behaviors are similar to ours and
we choose them as our friends.
To me, one of my best friends is Nam. Nam is only over eighteen but he is well
developed; so he is thought to be twenty or more. He has black hair, a broad forehead, a
straight nose and bright eyes. He is very good-looking. He has a kind heart and is easy
to get on with everybody. We have been friends for a very long time. The deeper our
mutual understanding becomes the more we feel closely attached to each other. “Birds
of a feather flock together”, Nam and I are keen on learning. We are the best pupils in
our class. Nam is always at the top. He is good at every subject, but he never shows
pride in his abilities and always tries to learn harder.
Nam’s family is not rich enough. His parents are retired workers. Realizing the
hardships of his parents, although he is absorbed in his study, he often spends most of
his spare time doing useful things to help his parents in their old age. He gets up early
in the morning to have enough time to deliver newspapers to subscribers before going
to school. After school in the afternoon, he repairs bicycles and motorbikes. Therefore
the money he gets from his manual job is sufficient for his school fees and for his
parents’ presents. I like Nam very much because of his honesty and straight
forwardness. He is always ready to help his weak friends in their study; as a result, lots
of friends, thanks to his whole-hearted help, have become good ones.
In my relation with Nam, I have got precious experience: thirst for learning,
patience to overcome difficulties, helpfulness and filial piety.
Topic 5. Why is it necessary to learn English
Today, there are many people all of the world study English. Most of people
think that maybe english becomes their second language. But have you ever wondered:"

Why do we need to learn English". Why don't we searching about it?
First, English helps you to improve friendship and maybe
include our knowledge around the world. Nowadays, many people have a wider
friendship around the world. So learning English is an important way to communicate
with friends from another countries. Absolutely, learning English can help you to make
more friends, we can exchange with a lot of people, improve our relationships. From
that, we can learn more, open our knowledge world. Every year, there are lots of
teenagers go overseas to learn for themselves, to improve every important, to bring
every new thing from another countries to our country.
Second, English helps you to connect our country to the
world or we can learn more about another countries's tradition. Learning English, we
can introduce every beautiful things, places, to internaional friends from another
countries. Foreigners wil be curious and they will travel to our country. On the contrary,
we can understand more special traditional foods, cultures, from another countries. I
think it's great so we need to learn English
Finally, we can find jobsmore easily. Today, all companies need their wokers
know at least on language, especially English. In some international companies, every
person have to know English well. So we need to learn English in other to have a good
job for you.
You can see. Learning is very important way to climb on our future stepladder. I
hope that people wil learn English for themselves and for their future
Topic 6 (Nguyễn Thị Hương) . Do you like to live in an old house or in a modern
flat
Living in old house or in a modern flat has different advantages and
disadvantages. But, I like to live in a modern flat because:
It is enough big to all of my family. A modern flat can comfortably sleep up to
us. We can use such modern devices as: TV sets and modern tv stand, hi-fi systems,
vacuum cleaners, washing machines, microwave ovens, electric irons and many others.
They are help in our daily life.
The flat is furnished with full kitchen and bathroom with shower and is not

lacking all amenities necessary for relaxing after an intense day. The kitchen is fully
equipped with utensils and all kitchenware needed to prepare meals. Around mordern
flat has many plant and flower, it makes us feel comfortably in life.
Topic 7 (Ngọc Minh) The difference between weekend and weekday
I am a high student. I often go to university every day from
Monday to Saturday. It is weekday. I am very busy with my studies.
Sunday is my holiday.it is my weekend.
Weekday mainly refers to the traditional working days of the week which usually
starts from Monday and ends on Friday. Weekday is
monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday and priday. Weekend on the other hand,
refers to the days of the week (usually Saturday and Sunday)where most workers
take a break from their work to pursue other personal, domestic and
social activities. Some workers do work on weekends as well.
In terms of activities they are the same because things done on weekends can be
done on weekdays. weekend is a good time for me. It refreshes my mind
after a week's hard work.
Topic 8(Bích Ngọc): Describe the house/flat where you live.
Hi all. Today, I’ll introduce my house to you.
I live in a house which is a big house. There are a lot of people who live in my
house. My house has about 20 rooms. People in my house are from a lot of places in
Viet Nam. My house has 5 floors. In the fifth floor, we use to sun-cured a lot of clothes.
And, in the first floor, we use to hold our motobikes.
And about my room, it has a bedroom and a bathroom. My bathroom is quite
clear and airy. I work at a small table in my room. There are a computer, a desk lamp
and somethings which I need to use in my small table.
My house is quite comfortable and conmodious and I quite like it.
Topic 9 ( Mr Thắng)
HOW COULD YOU TTRACT TOURIS TO YOUR TOWN
My Town is Ha Noi capital
Undergoing 1,000 years, witnessing all ups and downs of Vietnam history, Hanoi – a

dynamic capital of Vietnam is one of the “most-wanted” destinations which keeps
inside many of the historic and cultural vestiges for every foreign tourist who have
chance to travel to Vietnam. It is also a pride of Vietnamese people in general and
Hanoians in particular.
Hanoi is embraced by two rivers in the Northern Vietnam: Red River and Day River. It
is said that its name was derived from the meaning “the hinterland between the rivers”.
It was the trace of ancient rivers inside that made many beautiful and romantic lakes for
Hanoi capital. Lakes are the lung of Hanoi which plays an important role in making the
climate equable for all parts of a city. Also, they are the favorable place of interest for
every visitors and Hanoians, especially in summer.
“Hanoi 36 pho phuong” is another familiar phrase for the name of Hanoi. In the past,
each street specialized in a particular trade. That explains why Hanoi has the name of
36 districts. At present, although many of the streets no longer have the products for
which they were named, some still keep its trade for earning people’s livings. All streets
are gathered in Hanoi Old Quarter – which is situated near Hoan Kiem Lake in the heart
of Hanoi.
“A City of Peace” – Hanoi is worthy a center of politics, economy, culture and tourism
of Vietnam – one of the most interesting and safe destinations of foreign tourists to
Vietnam
Topic 10. Talk about an important city in your country
Hanoi is a city of four million people, including a population of approximately
5,000 expatriates, located in the North of Vietnam. Like many Asian cities, Hanoi is a
study in contrast; a vibrant and charming place filled with life lived out on the streets.
Bicycles and cyclos vie with buses, cars and the ubiquitous motorbike in the narrow
streets. Birds call from bamboo cages hung outside of homes and shops, amid the calls
of the street vendors, the beeping horns and the excited chatter of the Vietnamese
people. Spices, grilling meats, jasmine, and gardenia mingle with the smell of exhaust
from diesel buses. The weather, hot and humid in the summer, is cold and damp in the
winter.
Living in Vietnam is interesting, challenging, exciting and different in so many

ways from life in the West. But each of the sights, sounds, smells and temperatures that
greet you when you open your door are all evocative of South East Asia,
are usually pleasant and are all part of life in Hanoi.
Vietnam is a developing country but not, by any standards, an underdeveloped
country. Infrastructure, in terms of roads, telecommunications and electricity, are well
developed and reliable. There has been, and will continue to be, an increase in the last
few years in the availability of consumer goods and imported food stuffs, with a
number of new supermarkets and even a shopping mall and a cinema that shows
English-language films. Everything you’ll need for living, household use and school
items are becoming more and more widely available and there continues to be an
increasing number of leisure opportunities, such as fitness clubs and sporting facilities,
restaurants and bars, and cultural events.
Living in an ancient culture, visiting new and interesting places, meetingand
getting to know many different people, all add to the very positive aspects of life in the
capital city of Vietnam. Most Vietnamese people are extremely helpful when you find
yourself in a difficult situation where you may need directions or help. Many services
are not only inexpensive but easy to access - people will come to your home to collect
money for your bills, shine your shoes, teach you a new skill or even give a massage.
However, don’t expect that things will function the same way as in your home country,
or even the country you are leaving. Vietnam has its own way of doing things, some of
which will be a blessing to you and some of which will cause frustrations. A sense of
humour, much patience and a consciousness that you are here as a guest in this country
are definitely all required.
Your life in Vietnam will no doubt be a change to you. You will need to find
accommodation - which could be an apartment or house in the Ciputra housing estate
where the school is located or a house built for expatriates in the Tay Ho District - and
it will generally be very spacious. You may employ domestic staff for cooking,
cleaning and caring for your children. You may drive a motorbike (with a helmet) or
catch taxis for transportation. Your diet will change as you adjust to the many
wonderful tastes ofVietnamese food. You will need to find ways of negotiating in the

Vietnamese language or through an interpreter when things go wrong - from the water
pump in your house breaking down to difficulties over bargaining in the shops. Many
of the expatriates you will meet in your stay here have been through the same
experience of settling-in to life in Hanoi. They are a great resource when trying to
make the many day-to-day decisions that must be resolved during the settling in
process.
A good way to settle in is to make connections with the local Vietnamese
community. Many people are pleased to support your efforts in making contact and
there are ways of becoming connected to the local Vietnamese community, notably by
participating in community service activities through the school, charitable groups or
arts activities. The expatriate community is also an active one, with many opportunities
for socializing, playing sport, becoming involved in community work, or even joining a
drama group or a band. Your life here in Hanoi can be varied, colourful and rich.
The advantages and disadvantages when living in Ha Noi
Do you like living in Ha Noi ?? To me, I want to live in Ha Noi when I am young
but when I am old, I want to come back home town. Life in Ha Noi can be ideal lives
for you, not for others. Living in Han Noi has got its own advantages as well as
disadvantages.
Ha Noi is the capital of Viet Nam so if you live in Ha Noi, you have many
oppotunities to learn and develop yourself. It can be very easy to approach high-grade
services. There are educational, medical and transport facilities. Essential things are
easily available because there are big markets. The employment prospect are also better.
You can also have many chances to get a good job and earn money. For those who seek
entertaiment, Ha Noi has cinema houses and entertaiment centres. All other facilities
like banking, postal and telephone are easily available in Ha Noi. Beside that population
has high cultural background so you can accept progressive culture easily.
However living in Ha Noi also has many disadvantages. Ha Noi is very noisy and
crowded so life is very stuffy and narrow. Sometimes you feel very tired and angry.
There is hurry and bustle of a city. Beside that there are many polution problems in Ha
Noi such as air polution, water problem and trafic problems Living in Ha Noi must

spend a lot of money for services. Expenditures for lives are very expensive so it is
difficult to you save money. So I think that people must cramble for their life in Ha Noi
and life in Ha Noi is very tired.
To live in a big city or village depends on many factors. It depends on one's
occupation and preference. Although you live wherever, in Ha Noi, big city or a village,
each also has advantages and disadvantages.
Topic 11. What do you think fashion today
"Fashion" is the name given to the style of living among the upper classes and the rich.
Therefore, the certain styles of houses, furniture, foods and drinks, times of meals,
amusements, polite customs, and especially dress, are called "fashionable".
Fashions in all things are constantly changing. Certain games and amusements, styles of
furniture, rules of etiquette, foods and drinks, come into fashion and go out of fashion.
What was fashionable in the days of our fathers is no longer fashionable to-day. This is
especially true of fashions of dress which always means the latest fashion.
All that we do today has got to be fashionable and the latest to the list is whether you
are modern, the way you communicate, the way you present yourself everything ought
to be fashionable today. Though fashion in the past was related to the designerwear –
clothing, footwear, accessories and others the scope of the word has increased gradually
and now it covers everything that you can name of. From the kind of furniture, the kind
of cellphone, the kind of clothing, the kind of jewellery, the format of your letter
writing, the language you use on the email, the kind of cars, the way you wear make-up,
the shades you use for your clothes and your make-up to the way you place your
furniture’s in your house everything now go around fashion.
Today, fashion is a good mean of culture communication. Many countries all over the
world can understand each other by fashion in some ways. It can be said that fashion is
possibly the only mantra the whole world chants in unison today.
Phạm Minh Tuấn
12. Your favorite way of relaxing
My favorite way to relaxing is music. Why do I relax by music? Let me tell you why.
There are many way to relaxing as: Walking, swimming, reading, Watching the film, do

exercise but I choice music to relaxing because music can listen whenever, anywhere
when I am stressed. When I fell bad and stress then music is the source which change
my mood become better. It helps me to clear my head and forget all everything.
And the second reason that is I very like music. I like listening classical music,
instrumental music, love song
13. what do you thinkof the weather in Viet Nam
Vietnam is a tropical climate country. This country is devided into three regions : the
Northern ,the Middle and the Southern. I living in the Northern of VN and I talk about
the weather in the Northern of VN.
In the Northern of VN , there are 4 seasons : Spring,Summer, Autumn and Winter.
Spring is the most beautiful season in the year . Tet or New Year 's Eve ,which is
celebrated in Spring ,is the most important holiday.People decorate their house with
Peach-pot or apricot-pot.This holiday lasts 7 days.
Summer is hot and humid. 30/4 , 1/5 ,19/5 are holidays in this season. Autumn is the
season of falling leaves. I love this season because it is dry and cool. And Hand-in-
hand, walking with your girlfriend/boyfriend is Romantic. on 15/8 ,Mid-Fall is the
holiday for children in this season. Finally ,it is Winter. It which makes everyone close
together. Close to your girlfriend/boyfriend What do you think ? Cold but warm
,right ?
I like the weather in the northem of VN.
Topic 14 (Hải Yến): what forms of transport are the most suitable for cities? Why
I’m an office staff and every day I go to work at 8 o’clock and come home at 5:30,
which are the city’s rush hour. There are a lot of cars and motorcycle, all of them want
to go fast. Ha Noi is very densely populated and the most popular transportation is
motorcycle. I think if you want to move easily and quickly in this city, motorcycle is
the most appropriate . When you use a motorcycle, you will move faster and less tiring
than bike. In addition, motorcycles are also more useful than bike if you want to carry
bags.
Buses are also transport of many people, but when you go to somewhere by bus, you
have to wait quite long. Besides, there is a lot of theft on the bus. You will have to

careful to avoid losing the bags
If you own a car, this is great, it will protect you from the rain or cold. A car will be
more useful than a motorcycle if you go on the highway. But if you move in the city,
cars will bring a lot of inconvenience, such as car will move very slowly in the rush
hour, can’t go on the narrow roads, and very difficult to find a parking
Because of all that, I saw the motorcycle is the most suitable form of transport in the
city
Topic 15 (Trịnh Thị Liên)
do you think bicycle is still popular in the future? why? what are the benefits of
cycling to work?
Bicycles are vehicles with two wheels appear early 19th century in France. From its
inception bicycle has become an indispensable means of transport of persons.Today,
with the development of science and technology means turns are modern inventions
such as: Motorcycles, cars, airplanes
However cycling is one indispensable means in the present and the future.
Cycling helps to protect the environment because no emissions, in addition it also helps
people in good health. Some people also consider cycling as a hobby for recreation and
exercise the body.
A country filled with good cycling movement is Dutch, although the country scientific
and technical development.
I wish that Vietnam will become a national movement cycling development.
Topic 16 Give some advantages and disadvantages of travelling by airplane?
I am a person who loves to travel very much. I used to go to many interesting
places in my country. Most of it were done by bus, motorcycle and plane.
There are so many advantages and also disadvantages of making a trip by plane.
Firstly, the most important advantage of using plane to travel is its fastness. It just takes
some hours to move from HCMC to Ha Noi. For a car, it will be some days. People can
do a lot of things in the time saved by using plane instead of car.
Secondly, traveling by plane is very safe. It is difficult to find a plane accident in the
news but easy for a road accident. Flying in the sky without many barricades doesn’t

have some problem such as digging road, “crazy bus driver” or congestion. Traveler
will have a good sleep by using plane.
Finally, it is a convenience of traveling by plane. Nowadays, it is very easy to
find a flight to everywhere in the world. With the development of aeronaut, people will
have a lot of choices for their trip nowadays.
Beside its advantages, there are also many disadvantages of traveling by plane.
To begin with, traveling by plane is very expensive. People just have to pay about 600
thousands VND for a car from HCMC to HN. It is about 3 millions VND for a plane.
Making a trip by plane is not really a good choice for people who don’t have a lot
money.
In addition, it will be unavailable for many people to travel by plane. In a very high
height, airsickness will happen easily and it’s very terrible for all of traveler.
To sum up, traveling by plane has not only advantages but also
disadvantages. However, in nowadays, time is the best property. That’s why using plane
to travel is really a good choice for traveler around the world.
Topic 17 Which season do you like best in a year? Why? Which activites can you
take part in the season?
I was born in the North of Vietnam, where there are four clear seasons: Spring,
summer, autumn, and winter. Each season has its own charms and attractions. For
example, spring is the season which offers beautiful flowers and warm weather;
summer is the season of nice holidays when we can enjoy lots of outdoor activities such
as picnicking, camping, swimming, fishing etc Autumn is so beautiful with its ideal
weather while winter can give us such delight as gathering by a fire to chat or tell each
other funny stories. As far as I am concerned, I like autumn best because of the
following reasons:
During autumn, which lasts more or less from late July to early October, it is
sunny most of the time. The Autumnal sun is often splendid, dying nature yellow. The
weather is also ideal because it is not too cold or too hot. Then the coldish northwesterly
wind, which blows gently, thrills everyone with the breath of autumn. The leaves of the
trees turning yellow or red put a gorgeous coat of colours on nature. Autumn is such a

wonderful season that many poems and songs have been composed to sing the praises
of the season. Autumn is also a season which reminds me of my first day at school,
when my mother took me by the hand and led me to school for the first time.
Last but not least, autumn is the time when I can enjoy my favourite fruit and
dish which are the Japanese persimmons and the green rice flakes. These are found only
in autumn.
Topic 18: Many people say that it is better living to eat than eating to live. Do you
agree? Give reasons to your answer?
All people eat to live. I have no doubt about the accuracy of that fact. I will
conclude by sharing my personal views on this topic.
What do I mean when I say, “eat to live”? For me, this refers to the biological
sense inherent in the concept. All humans need to eat in order to survive. Once you stop
eating, you will die. To avoid this fate, you and I eat food and drink water. Sometimes,
my eating has nothing to do with my biological survival. I’m eating because of some
other reason outside of simply staying alive. In sum, “eat to live” is a biological
understanding whereas, “live to eat” is psychological, social, and emotional.
What if you could make your point about how unhealthy eating fast food is for
your body? Would you do it, even at the risk of your own health? Most people would
not, but in the movie, “Supersize Me”, a man decides to eat at McDonald’s three times a
day. In fact, all his meals are at McDonald’s. Over the course of the movie, we watch a
healthy young man suffer extreme physical problems related to obesity, such as high
blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, and even heart disease. The man’s doctor in the
movie is visibly distressed over the effects caused by, “living to eat” at McDonald’s. As
the movie ends, you are relieved that the man is still alive.
In conclusion, all of us eat to live. We don’t want to die due to lack of food and
water, so we eat to stay alive. Personally, I can only say that eating has a very important
role to play in my life. I eat to live, and for me, this is the way that benefits my health.
Still, I know that as long as food is a way to have a successful life, or prove a point
about how eating fast food is bad for you.
Topic 19: More should be done to protect the natural features, such as lakes and

rivers, of the world. How far do you agree with this statement?
Natural features of environment are important and value of to human in one form
or the other. However, the advancement of modern civilization has had a great impact
on our planet's natural features. So, protect them is very essential today. There are many
ways that one can protect natural features. All you need to do is to look around and see
what natural features you are using and find out ways to protect them. We know we
need clean drinking water in order to live. But rivers and lakes – freshwater ecosystems
– provide much more. They water our crops, give us fish to eat, light our homes and
bring us joy. Most of the people use water from rivers and lake to drink and water the
plants and trees. If the rivers or lakes are polluted, people and trees will be died for
deseases or lacking of pure water.
Yet around the world we are crippling the ability of rivers and lakes to support
people, plants and animals. Scientists predict that by 2025 more than two-thirds of the
world’s population could face water shortages.
We can change course. We can balance across our many needs better and
preserve nature’s ability to provide for future generations, too. We have new
knowledge, new tools and a growing community of people committed to saving our
water.
Topic 20: How would you compare your living standards to those of your
grandparents?
My grandpa always says that our lives now are greater than theirs when they
were young and I should enjoy and cherish my life instead of complaining much. There
is no doubt that in most of aspects our lives are indeed better than our grandparents’
when they were young.
The first reason I want to mention is that the economical situation of our family is
far better than our grandparents’. At that time, people were usually worried about food,
and once someone killed himself for lack of money. Few people can afford to attend
university, while now most of people are able to go to university thanks to the
development of economics. Besides the tuition of university, we can spend more money
on our hobbies which is unimaginable in our grandparents’ time. My grandpa was really

like reading when he was young, but he couldn’t buy his favorite book for his family
was poor.
The second reason is that nowadays we can live more convenient and easier lives
with the help of science and technology. Without those equipments, it must have taken
our grandparents lots of time, which should have been used to rest, to do those boring
things. What’s more, we can communicate with others quicker with the Internet, while
people had to communicate with friends in other cities by writing letters which was
very slow and a little expensive before. In a word, our lives really get better as the
science and technology developing dramatically.
However, the fact that more and more young people now are suffering mental
illnesses because of the pressure at work can be easily left out. There was less
competition when our grandparents were young. Though people were not rich at that
time, everyone have a relatively stable job. In contrast, nowadays even college
graduates are hard to find jobs. To make a living, people must work hard to avoid being
fired. Therefore, they feel much depressed and even lose their hearts. However, through
remedy many people can recover from those emotional problems and regain self-
confidence. And with the help of some relevant policy, people’s pressure may be
decrease gradually.
Considering all the analysis above, we may safely come to the conclusion that
with the development of economics, science and technology our lives are better than
our grandparents’ when they were young though nowadays more young people have
some emotional problems.
