2. Activity 1: Ask Ss to read the passage carefully and then choose A, B, C or D.
* Everyone suffers from disease at sometime or another. However, millions of
people around the world do not have good health care. People are very afraid of unknown
things, especially diseases. People have all kinds of ideas about how to prevent and treat
diseases. Some people think that if you eat lots of onions or garlic, you won’t get sick.
Others say you take huge amounts pf vitamins. Only a few doctors go out into the streets of
the poor areas to educate the people. Only a few doctors and some nurses vaccinate people
and supervise them to make sure they take their medicine. Most people who help the poor

people with their health problems are volunteers.
How can you use all this information for your own good health? When someone
you know becomes ill, try to avoid physical contact with that person. If you get sick
yourself, keep your towel and dishes separate from everyone else’s. Try not to touch things
that belong to others. However, you don’t want people to think you are impolite. Wash your
hands often I you are ill or if anyone around you is ill.

* No one knows who invented pencils or when it happened. A Swiss described a
pencil in a book in 1565. He said it was a piece of wood with lead inside it. Lead is a very
heavy metal. Pencils weren’t popular, and people continued to write with pens. They used
bird feathers as pens. Then in 1795 someone started making pencils from graphite and they
became very popular.Graphite is a kind of coal. Today people make pencils in the same
way.
Two Hungarian brothers, Ladislao and Geory Biro, invented the ballpoint pen that
we all use today. They lelf Hungary and started making ballpoint pens in England in 1943
during World War II. English pilots liked them. They couldn’t write with fountain pens in
airplanes because the ink leaked out.
