MỘT SỐ NGUYÊN TẮC CƠ BẢN ĐỂ XÁC ĐỊNH TRỌNG ÂM TRONG TỪ TIẾNG ANH
(SOME RULES OF WORD STRESS IN ENGLISH)
Khi phát âm, mỗi từ trong TA được cấu thành bởi 1 hoặc nhiều âm tiết.
VD: Mum (1 âm tiết), mother (2 âm tiết), grandmother (3 âm tiết). Từ có 2 âm tiết trở lên phải
nhấn trọng âm và mỗi từ chỉ có 1 trọng âm chính (phát âm dài hơn, rõ hơn và cao hơn). Trọng
âm được nhấn vào nguyên âm, không vào phụ âm.
1/ Một số quy tắc nhấn trọng âm với các từ có 2 âm tiết:
a. Hầu hết các danh từ (DT) và tính từ (TT) 2 âm tiết có trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết rơi vào âm
tiết thứ nhất. VD: - Nouns (n): BROther; MONey; SHOWer
- Adjectives (adj): HAPpy; PRETty; SUNny
b. Hầu hết các động từ 2 âm tiết có trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2, trừ các động từ 2 âm tiết kết
thúc bằng “er, en”. VD: rePEAT, allOW, enJOY. Ngoại trừ: ANswer, Offer, LISten.

c. Một số từ 2 âm tiết, vừa là động từ, vừa là danh từ. Khi là danh từ trọng âm được nhấn vào
âm tiết 1, khi là động từ trọng âm được nhấn vào âm tiết thứ 2. Tuy nhiên có 1 số ngoại lệ
như:
- Verbs: reCORD, conTRAST, exPORT, deSERT, obJECT, preSENT, proDUCE, reBEL,
proTECT.
- Nouns: Record, CONtrast, EXport, DEsert, OBject, PREsent, PROduce, Rebel, PROtest.
Ngoại lệ (Vs & Ns): ANswer, PROmise, TRAvel, VIsit, rePLY, PICture.
2/ Một số quy tắc nhấn trọng âm với các từ ghép (2 từ đơn ghép với nhau):
- Hầu hết các danh từ ghép 2 âm tiết đều có trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết 1. VD: BLACKboard,
NOTEbook, ARMchair, TOOTHpaste, BOOKcase, MAILbox, RAILway, HOTdog,
PLAYground, HIGHway.
- Hầu hết các tính từ ghép có phần thứ nhất là tính từ hoặc trạng từ thì trọng âm chính rơi vào
âm 2, nhiều TT ghép bắt đầu bằng danh từ có trọng âm rơi vào âm 1. VD: old-FASHION,
well-DRESS, good-LOOKING, fast-CHANGING nhưng HOME-sick, HEART-broken,
LOVE-sick.
- Hầu hết các động từ ghép có trọng âm chính rơi vào phần thứ 2, VD: overWEIGH,
underSTAND, overFLOW, underSTATE.
3/ Một số trường hợp mà trọng âm của từ phái sinh từ một từ gốc có trọng âm giống
trọng âm của từ gốc:
a/ Một số từ có 2 âm tiết được tạo ra từ 1 từ gốc có 1 âm tiết. VD: art -> ARTist, drive ->
DRIVer, move -> reMOVE, come -> beCOME.
b/ Một số tiền tố và hậu tố mà trọng âm của từ gốc không bị thay đổi khi được ghép với
chúng dù từ mới được tạo ra là từ 2 âm tiết hay 3 âm tiết trở lên.
- Trọng âm của từ gốc không bị thay đổi khi ghép với các tiền tố như: under-, in-, im-, un-
VD: Underpay, unemPLOYed, imPOSsible.
- Trọng âm của từ gốc không bị thay đổi khi ghép với các hậu tố như:
-able, -al,-er, -or, -ul, -ing, -ize, -ise, -ish, -less, -ly, -ment, -ness, -ship, -ed.
VD: DRINKable, MUSICal, Employment, Courful, CHILDhood, RUNning, CIVilise,
CHILDish, TASTEless, FRIENDly, HAPpiness, FRIENDship, emPLOYed.
c/ Tuy nhiên, khi ta chuyển loại từ thì một số hậu tố hay đuôi từ lại chuyển trọng âm của từ

sang một âm tiết khác. Sau đây là một số quy tắc chuyển trọng âm trong các từ dài.
- Trọng âm thường rơi vào âm tiết trước cụm chữ: -ic, -ical, -ics, -sion, -tion, -tional, -cian.
VD: Educate -> eduCAtion; Music -> muSIcian; eLECtric -> elecTRIcian; DECorate ->
decoRAtion; inVITe -> inviTAtion; eCONomic -> ecoNOmic.
- Trọng âm thường rơi vào âm tiết trước cụm chữ: -ity, -aphy, -logy.
VD: PUBlic -> pubLICity, PHOtograph -> phoTOgraphy, NATional -> natioNALity,
CLImate -> climaTOlogy.

1. Mo t xỏc nh (definite article): THE
- Dựng trc danh t ch ngi hay vt ó c nhc n trc ú :

2. Mo t khụng xỏc nh (indefinite article) : a, an (trc danh t m c số ít)
Mạo từ bất định a, an đợc dùng với nghĩa một (cái, ngời, vật).
+ "A"dựng trc danh từ số ít đếm đợc bắt đầu bằng ph õm. Eg: a chair a key a dog a
boy
Hoặc những danh từ có cách đọc nh phụ âm. Eg: a university
+ "An" dùng trớc danh từ số ít đếm đợc bắt đầu bằng nguyên âm. (a, e, i, o, u)
Eg: an eraser an umbrella an orange an egg an apple an inkpot
Hoặc những danh từ có cách đọc nh nguyên âm. Eg: an hour

Nếu trớc danh từ có một tính từ xen vào giữa, việc lựa chọn a hoặc an phụ thuộc vào tính từ này:
Eg: a big orange an old house
- Khi cp ln u tiờn: I met a good person on the street.
- Trc ngh nghip ca mt ai ú: My father is a doctor.
- Trc i tng riờng l, cú ngha l mt : 60 kilometres an hour
- Trong cõu cm thỏn vi danh t m c: What a beautiful day! Such a pretty girl!
3. Khụng dựng mo t:- Trc tờn cỏc quc gia : Japan, China
Tr: The United States, The United Kindom, The Philippines, The Netherlands.
- Trc tờn cỏc ngụn ng, ba n, mụn th thao: French, English, breakfast, lunch, dinner,
football, volleyball
- Trc tc hiu, ngn nỳi, ao h: Queen Elizabeth, President Obama, Mount Everest
