In the morning of December 26, 2004 a magnitude 9.3 earthquake struck off the northwest coast of the
Indonesian island of Sumatra. The earthquake was the result from complex slip on the fault under the
oceanic portion of the Indian plate slides struck Sumatra, part of the Eurasian plate. The earthquake
deformed the ocean floor, where the overlying water up into a tsunami wave. The tsunami wave
devastated nearby areas where the wave may have been as high as 25 meters tall and killed nearly
300.000 people from nations in the region and tourists from around the world.

Long ago a lot of people thought the moon was a god. Other people thought it was just a light in the
sky. And others thought it was a big ball cheess!
The telescope was made. And men saw that the moon was really another world. They wondered what
it was like. They dreamed of going there. On July 20, 1969, that dream came true. Two American men
landed on the moon. Their names were Neil Amstrong and Edwin Aldrin.
The first thing the men found was the moon is covered with dust. The dust is so thick that the men left
footprints where they walked. Those were the first marks a living thing had ever made on the moon.And
they could stay for years and years.There is no wind or rain to wipe them off. The two men walked on the
moon for hours. They picked up rocks to bring back to earth for study. They dig up dirt to bring back.
They set up machines to find out things people wanted to know. Then they climed back into their moon
landing craft. They were off on their long trip back to earth. Behind them they left the plains and tall

mountains of the moon. They left the machines they had set up and they left footprints that may last
forever.

Environmental pollution is the most serious problem facing mankind today. Air, water and soil
are necessary to the survival of all living things. Badly polluted air can cause illness, and even death.
Polluted water kills fish and other marine life. Pollution of soil reduces the amount of land that is
available for growing food. Environmental pollution also brings ugliness to man’s naturally beautiful
world.
