Unit 12: THE ASIAN GAMES
Period 4: Writing
Time allotted: 45 minutes
Class: 11B1 (Room: 17)

I. Aims: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- know the way how to use linking words in writing.
- write a paragraph describing the preparation for the Asian Games.
- know how to work in pairs or in groups.
II. Teaching Aids and Materials: textbook, posters, handouts.

Game: GUESSING
- T divides the class into two groups (Group A and Group B)
- T tells students that they will play game GUESSING
- T gives some instructions: I have a saying with 12 letters
numbered from 1 to 12. This saying means: “If you don’t try hard,
you won’t succeed”. Work in groups. Take turns to choose the
number and I will show the letter. The group with the fastest answer
will win the game.
- T uses the technique: STEP- BY- STEP to check the instructions.


- T lets students play the games and declares the winner.

Activity 1: Rearrange the sentences
- T gives some instructions: Work in group. Read the
handouts and rearrange sentences to have a complete paragraph in
3 minutes.
A. To prepare for my birthday party, I have a lot of things to do.
D. First of all, I have to decide where the party will take place,
such as in a cosy restaurant or just at my house.
B. And I also have to think about whom to invite, list them out and
deliver the birthday invitation.
C. Then I have to prepare the decorations for my party.
E. Finally, I have to think about food, drinks and also some games.

Activity 2: Write a paragraph
- T gives some instructions: Work in pair. Write a paragraph
describing the preparations for the Asian Games using following
information in 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, exchange your paper and
correct your friend’s paragraph.
- T uses the technique: STEP- BY- STEP to check the
instructions.
- T gives example for students.
Activity 2: Write a paragraph (work in pairs)
Example:
To prepare for the coming Asian Games, we have a lot of things
to do. First of all, we will build one more National Stadium and some
sports buildings and car parks. And we will widen the training areas
and the roads to the sports buildings. Then we have to equip all the
hotels and guest houses with modern facilities to welcome foreign
athletes and visitors. Finally, we need to recruit volunteers to serve the
Games- These people should be university teachers and students with
good English.
Note: use “ to be going to”/ “ will” + B.I
- T delivers the handouts (see appendix) and lets students 5
minutes write a paragraph.
- T reminds students to pay attention to using linking words in
their writing.

- T asks students to exchange their paragraph and correct the
paragraph.

Activity 3: Correction
- T divides the students into 4 groups; each group chooses a
group leader and a secretary.
- T gives some instructions: Work in group. Choose the best

paragraph of each group. Write it on the poster in 5 minutes and
stick the poster on the board.
- T uses the technique: STEP- BY- STEP to check the
instructions.
- T lets students 5 minutes write their paragraph in the poster.
- T asks students to stick the posters on the board, gives
comments and declares the best paragraph.
