Topic 1: You agree to meet your English- speaking friend tomorrow but now you can’t go. Write
an email to him or her to apologise, explain why you can’t meet and suggest meeting another
day.
Start with: Dear Ann/ Tom; End with: Nguyen Phan
Dear Ann
16
By right we’re meeting each other tomorrow. But my apologies, I’ll not be able to see you. I
will be having a formal year-end meeting at my company. The meeting is about the reflection
and review of our company’s progress this year so it is really important. Besides, I will be in
charge of the whole programe like doing presentation and setting up visualiser. I’m really sorry

that I can’t see you. I’d appreciate if you understand and I’m sure we will have another chance
to meet up soon. Perhaps we can meet on New year’s Day if you are free on that day. It will
definitely be exciting and we will have fun time together, talking and enjoying ourselves.
Lots of love
Nguyen Phan
Topic 2: Describe your ideal house
Iam a nature lover. Thus, I want my house to have great view with alot of trees around. And
I can breathe in clean and fresh air. This kind of environment around my house would be
pleasant. Moreover, the rooms should have good ventilation so that I can feel comfortable. In
addition, I want a balcony in my house so that in the morning I can go there and enjoy the
sunlight shining into my house. To have all these conditions, my house should be located in a
peaceful and quiet area, perhaps in the outskirt of the city and far from traffic roads. On top of
that, I want to see my house painted in blue beacaus this colour symbolizes peace. Finally, it
would certainly be excellent if the security of my house is good. There should be security guard
all day and night watching over our house.
Topic 3: Write about your typical day at work
I am a sale manager in charge of business so my working day is very flexible that depends
on the customers, projects and time. But basically, my working day includes the following
tasks:
In the morning I often go to the office at 8:30 and the first important work to be done is to
swipe my ID staff card. From 8:30 to 9:00 is the time to open the computer, drink water and
chat with colleagues. Then I check and answer emails from 9:00 to 9:30. From 9:30 to 10:00 is
usually used to check which things have not been resolved yet and arrange emergent things to
17
solve first. From 10:00 to 12:00 is flexible time, I can meet customers, have group meeting and
department meeting at the company, or read jobs related and useful documents, etc. From 12:00
to 1:30 is for lunch and rest. I have lunch at the company or occasionally have lunch with
customers. Then I have a short sleep at noon in the company. Working hours of the afternoon
are from 1:30 to 6:00. From 1:30 to 2:00 is time to surf the internet to update information and
other issues related to my job. I often meet customers from 2:00 to 4:00 at the coffee or the

customer's office. Time from 4:00 to 5:00 is for checking and solving the remaining things that
have not been solved yet. From 5:00 to 6:00 is the time to check and reply to emails and read
documents. My working day ends at 6:00 pm. Before leaving the office, I always remember
doing one thing very similar in the morning is to swipe my ID staff card.
Topic 4: Do you think teenagers should work? Why (not)?
In my opinion teenagers should work but they just work out of learning hours at school. The
problem is that what they do, how they can manage their time not to affect their learning.
Their working makes them more dynamic. They can open up their vision rather than being
constrained within the family and school. In working environment, they can meet more people
and get more new friends.
With the working, they can have experience and prepare well for their future. It helps them
know how the working environment is and what they need to prepare. Then they have the
appropriate learning plan. In the working place, they can apply what they have learned into
practice. The working helps them expand knowledge, especially of social knowledge. It helps
them learn the working skills and how to treat other people in society.
The income from working also helps them do things they love without depending on their
parents. With the money they earn, they can join the helpful courses and purchase their favorite
things. It also helps them realize the value of money that their parents have worked hard to earn
by even blood and tears. However, they must choose appropriate and lawful jobs. They should
plan for their learning and working that does not affect their learning because the learning is
still the most important in their age.
Topic 5: Write a passage about an important city in our country?
Nha Trang- a coastal city and capital of Khanh Hoa province, is an excellent destination for
travel and entertainment.
With such natural gifts as the postion, landscape, climate, together with its rich background
in culture and humanities, Nha Trang is fully capable of developing many diverse forms of
tourism. When you arrived in Nha Trang, you can join tours to visit interesting places in the
city such as Tram Huong Tower, Po Nagar Cham Tower, Long Son Pagoda, Place of Emperor
18
Bao Dai, Oceanographic Institure, Fairy Stream, Yangbay Waterfall, Hon Chong Rocks Also,

you can bath as well as sunbathe on beautiful and pristine beaches with fine and clean sand.
Beside you can travel around islands off the coast such as Monkey Island, Silkworm Island,
Ebony Island, Swiftlet Island, Tri Nguyen Aquarium and especially Bamnoo Island (Hon Tre
Island) which located off Vinpearl Land. Vinpearl Nha Trang is known as the largest and
unique tourism and recreation complex. A great number of cultural- entertainment events have
been held in Vinpearl Land, especially major Viet Nam and World Beauty contests such as
Miss Viet Nam, Miss World Vietnamese, Miss Earth and Miss Universe Except enjoying
beauty contests, you can participate cultural parties such as Sea Festival which are held
biennially or attend fairs. With everyone who loves sport, can plays sporting activities such as
scuba diving, water skiing, sailboat racing There are many resorts, amusement and water
parks which satisfy this demand, particualarly theme park on Hon Tre Island. In addition, when
you go to Nha Trang on holidays, you can enjoy music programs ans fashion shows at City Hall
and Vinpearl Land.
In conclusion, with multiform and rich natural conditions, Nha Trang has become one of the
most important tourist hubs of Viet Nam and attracted more and more tourists home and
abroad.
Topic 6: Write a passage about your hobbies.
My hobbies are reading and painting. First of all, reading books not only helps you to
acquire knowledge and develop your vocabulary, but also strengthens your memory and shapes
your behavior. I started reading when I was 7. I like reading novels, medical books and short
stories. At this time, I am reading a famous novel called “Great Gatsby”. My second hobby is
painimg. Colors of paintings make me feel like I am in a fairy tale. I prefer to use water color to
illustrate what I love. I often draw the landscapes and the floral paintings. My favorite artists
are Salvador Dali and Van Gogh. In conclusion, I think reading and painting are both wonderful
hobbies that you should enjoy in the free time
Topic 7: Write a passage about one of your unforgettable holidays (xem kỹ)
Last year I had a very interesting and unforgettable holiday with my family. It was five-day
holiday in Bangkok. We flew there by air and stayed in a hotel near the river. The hotel was
comfortable, but quite expensive. We liked the food very much but we didn’t like the weather-
it was very hot. There were a lot of tourists there, they were from different countries. My

children were fond of talking with them in English. The city was enormous so we didn’t walk
very much. We travelled on the new overhead railway. It was very fast and comfortable. We
19
visited a lot of temples and we watched the boats on the river. We visited some fantastic street
markets and bought a lot of souvernirs. We had very happy days there. It was our unforgetable
holiday.
Topic 8: Write about some things exciting you like to do for relaxing
I am a state employee, I have to work 5 days a week, so I’m very busy. After the work,
reading is one of activities I like to do for relaxing. I read story books, magazines, newspapers
and any kind of material that I find interested. This hobby got started when I was a little girl. I
wanted my parents to read fairy tales and other stories to me. But they got fed up and tired of
having to read the same stories again and again. I started to read simple fairy tales and other
stories by myself. Now I read anything that is available. Reading enables me to learn about so
many things that I do not know. I could learn about ther wounders of the world, space travel,
human achievements, animals, world news and other fascinating things of our world.
Topic 9: How to make your life happier
In this era, life is busy and fast-pace. Therefore, peole tend to get stressed quite easily.
Thus, people hope to find ways to cope with stress and stay happily. I have my own ways to be
happy. For me, a weekend entirely spent with my family is the best way to get away from stress
after every working week. We as a family do a lot of things together to relax and have fun. We
may go shopping at a suppermarket or going to an amusement park. It is truly entertaining or
we also enjoy gardening because it’s very relaxing. Sometimes, we change our weekend
activities by meeting up with friends. We usually eat out together or watch nice movies.
Additionally, on special occasion like birthday of anyone in my family, I invite some of my
friends and relatives to come over to my house for birthday celebration. These are some tips to
have a happy life. Happiness is also very good for health. That’s why I’m really comcerned
about how to stay happily.
Topic 10: what do you think of TV program today?
One can watch a variety of program on TV today. Moreover, the programs are high-quality
and enjoyable. The news programs are really informative. They provide hotly discussed issues

and regularly update about important information to TV viewers. Besides, the news program
also inform viewers about new governments’polices so they can keep up with the changes in
their countries. The entertainment programs are also great. People can enjoy nice movies of
various types such as actionfilms, comedies or horror films. A lot of movies are good and they
help people relax, especially after a tiring day at work. A part from movies, game shows are
very fun and viewers can also learn some new things from the shows. In conclusion, the TV
20
programs today are terrific and much better than in the past. The number of programs is greater
and better in quality.

Hotels are changing their wasteful habits and getting involved in the move to save the
environment. At major hotels throughout the world, (1) guests are being greeted by shampoo and
mouthwash in glass dispensers instead of elaborate plastic bottles. They are discovering recycling bins
in their (2) rooms, and are encouraged to use towels more than once before they are washed.
21
This green movement, is becoming increasingly popular among (3) tourists who look for service
providers with an enviromental conscience. The business of eco-tours is (4) increasing rapidly. Travel
agents are booking clients on “Save the Rainforest” expeditions and similar trips where the emphasis is
on protecting the (5) would.
The tourists on these trips are (6) given lectures on the effects of the loss of our planet’s natural
wonders and what they can do to reverse the trend. They do not need (7) much convincing. The
travelers on these excursions (8) are already committed to environmental protection. In fact, a two-
year study of litter in Antarctica found (9) that the entire collection of litter left by visitors to the
continent could be put in one small sandwich bag. Compare that amount of litter (10) with what the
average traveler finds strewn on the streets around a hotel, even an environmentally sensitive hotel.

My name’s Charles. I’m 15 years old, and I live (1) at home withe my mother, my father and my
younger sister. I like the area where I live because there are so (2) many cafés, restaurants, shops and
cinemas. During the week I go to school. I’m working very hard at the moment because we have

exams soon and I want to (3) pass them. However, on Saturday morning I have a part-time job. I wash
cars for my neighbours. I don’t (4) earn much money for this, but I usually have enough to spend on
the things I like doing. Last year I took (5) up photography, so I spend most of my money on cameras
and computer software.

It’s very cold today. In fact, it’s (1) absolutely fzeezing. I hope it is better on Friday, because our

everyone tells me they are great fun. We are going to look for old objects that are buried under the
ground. This is (4) much more exciting than it sounds, because some of these things can be quite
valuable. For example, a boy I (5) met at a party last year had found an ancient coin worth £1,000! I
was (6) surprised that something so small could be so valuable. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to
find these things, because some of them can be (7) as deep as two meters underground and we (8)
must use special equipment to find them. It would be great to find something very valuable, like a box
of Roman gold, but we would probably be satisfied (9) with an old plate or something like that. Of
course, we (10) might not find anything, bit at least we get a day off school!

SALLY
After two weeks of worry, a famer (0) in the north of England was very happy yesterday. James
Tuke, a famer who (1) keeps sheep, lost his dog, Sally, when they were out (2) working together a
fortnight ago.
“Sally was running (3) ahead of me”, he said, “ and disappeared over the top of the hill. I
whistled and called (4) but she didn’t come. She’s young, so I thought perhaps she’d gone back to the
farmhouse (5) on her own. But she wasn’t there. Over the next few days I (6) spent as much time as I
22
could looking for her. I afraid that I would never see her (7) again. Then a neighbour said she’d heard
an animal crying while she was out walking near the (8) edge of a cliff. I rushed out and found Sally
on a shelf of rock halway down. She was thin and (9) weak but she had no (10) serious injuries. She
was really lucky!”

RUNNING SHOES

Running is now very popular (0) both as a sport and as a way if keeping fit. Even if you only run
a short (1) distance once or twice a week, you (2) need to make sure you wear good shoes. (3) There
is a lot of choice nowadays in running shoes. First of all, decide how (4) much you want to (5) spend
on your shoes. Then find a pair which fits you well. Be prepared to (6)try different sizes in different
types of shoe. Women’s shoes are made narrower (7) than men’s and, although most women will find
a woman’s shoe which suits them, there is no (8) reason why a woman can’t wear a man’s shoe. The
same is true for a man- (9) if a woman’s shoe fits you better, then wear it. Take you time in the shop. If
you (10) make a mistake and buy the wrong shoes, your feet will let you know.

A WELSH FESTIVAL
Wales has a (0) population of about three million. English is the main language and only twenty
year per cent speak both Welsh and English. Every year (1) in August there is a Welsh-speaking
festival. It (2)takes place in a different town each year so everyone has the chance for it to be near
them. Local people (3) spend years making plans for when the festival will be in (4) their town. Each
festival is (5) attended by abou 160,000 people. They travel not only from nearby towns and villages
(6) but aslofrom the rest of the British Isles and (7) even from aboad. There are concerts, plays and (8)
competitions to find the best singers, poets, writers, and so on. Shops sell Welsh music, books,
pictures and clothes as (9) well as food and drink. The festival provides a chance for Welsh-speaking
people to be together for a whole week, with (10) the Welsh language all around them.

FURTHER A EDUCATION
Around the age of sixteen you must make one of the biggest decisions (0) of your life. Do I stay
on at school and hopefully go on to university (1) later? Do I leave and start work or begin a training
(2) course? The dicision in yours, but it may be (3) worth remembering two things: there’s more
unemployment (4) among people who haven’t been to university, and people who have the right (5)
skills will have a big advantage in the competition for jobs.
23
If you decide to go (6) straight into a job, there are many opportunities for training. Getting
qualifications will (7) help you to get on more quickly in many careers, and evening classes allow you
to learn (8) while you earn. Staring work and taking a break to study when you’re older is (9) another

possibility. This way, you can save up money for your student days, as well as (10) getting practical
work experience.

STARTING A BUSINESS
Nearly 450,000 businesses are started in Britain (0) year. One third (1) these stops trading
during the first three years.
Starting a business is never easy (2) so many things are outside your control. If you are thinking
about working for yourself, you (3) start by thinking about the qualities you need to (4) a business.
Be hard with youself. If you have a weakness, it is better to find out now (5) than later when your
business could be in danger. Ask yourself (6) you are a good organiser. Is your health (7) ? are you
good (8) making decisions? Do you have any practical experience of the business you want to start?
Are you prepared to work long hours for very (9) money? If you can’t (10) yes to most of these
questions, perhaps you should think again about starting up in business on your own.

THE FIRST WOMAN SCIENTIST
Hypatia was (0) born in Alexandria, in Egypt, in 370 A.D. For many centuries she was (1) the
only woman scientist to have a place in the history books.
Hypatia’s father was director of Alexandria University, and he (2) made sure his daughter had
the best education available. This was unusual, as most women then had few (3) opportunities to
study.
After studying in Athens and Rome, Hypatia returned to Alexandria (4) where she began
teaching mathematics. She soon became famous (5) for her knowledge of new ideas.
We have no copies of her books, (6) but we know that she wrote several important mathematical
works. Hypatia was also interested in technology and (7) invented several scientific tools to help with
her work.
At the (8) time many rulers were afraid of science, and (9) anyone connected with it was in
danger. One day in March 415, Hypatia (10) was attacked in the street and killed.

SAMUEL PEPYS
The most famous diary (0)in English was written by Samuel Pepys. It gives a detailed and

interesting (1)description of everyday life in England (2)between1660 and 1669. Pepys writes about
important news stories of time, like disease, an enemy navy (3) sailing up the River Thames and the
Great Fire of London.
24
He also writes about himself, even about his (4) faults– he often slept during church or (5)
lookedat the pretty girls. He describes his home life- a (6) quarrel with his wife and how they became
friends again, his worry about her illness. As well as books, he liked music, the theatre, card (7)
games, and parties with good food and (8) plenty of fun. Peys was a busy man who had many
important (9) jobs - he was a Member of Parliament and President of the Royal Society. He is also (10)
remembered for his work for the British Navy.

THE ROCKIES
The Rocky Mountains run almost the length (0) of North America.
They start in the North-west, but lie only a (1) few hundred miles from the centre in more
southern areas. Although the Rockies are smaller (2) than the Alps, they are no less wonderful.
There are many roads across the Rockies, (3) but the best way to see them is to (4) travel by
train. You start from Vancouver, (5) the most attractive of Canada’s big cities. Standing with its feet in
the water and its head in the mountains, this city (6) allows its residents to ski on slopes just 15
minutes by car from the city (7) centre.
Thirty passenger trains a day used to (8) set off from Vancouver on the cross- continent railway.
Now there are just three a week, but the ride is still a great adventure. You sleep on board, (9) which is
fun, but travel through some of the best (10) scenery at night.
Test 4/Page 74
CARTOON FILMS
Cartoon films have very (0) few limits. If you can draw something, you can (1) make it move on
the cinema screen. The use (2) of new ideas and advanced computer programs means that cartoons are
becoming exciting again for people of (3) all ages.
By the (4) end of the 1970s, the cinema world had decided that cartoons were only for children.
But soon (5) afterwards, one or two directors had some original new ideas. They proved that it
was possible to make films in which both adults and children could (6) share the fun.

However, not (7) every cartoon film was successful. The Black Cauldron, for example, failed,
mainly because it was too (8) frightening for children and too childish for adults. Directors learnt from
this (9) mistake, and the film companies began to make large (10) amounts of money again.
