In the 1960s, the World Health Organization (WHO) began a campaign te eradicate the mosquitoes
that transmit the disease malaria. It was a noble goal, since malaria kills an estimated 3 million people each
year in the world's tropical regions, predominantly southern Africa, WHO led an effort to spray the
mosquitoes' habitat with a chemical pesticide- a poison used to kill insects- called DDT. Early results were
promising, and the mosquito was eliminated from the edge of its native range. The effort soon faltered,
however, and the eradication was dropped. How could a tiny mosquitoe thwart the best efforts of a large
group of well- funded scientists.
Situations like this one have occurred dozens of times in the last several decades. In a common
scenario, whenever a new type of pesticide is used to control agricultural pest, the early results are
encouraging. A relatively small amount of the poison dusted onto a crop may kill 99% of the insects.
However, the relatively few survivors of the first pesticides wave are insects with genes that somehow
enable them to resist the chemical attack. The poison kills most members of the insect population, leaving
only the resistant individuals to reproduce. And when they do, their offspring inherit the genes for pesticide
resistance. In each generation, the proportion of pesticide- resistant individuals in the insect population
increases, making subsequent sprayings less and less effective.
Since the widespread use of chemical pesticides began in the 1940s, scientists have documented
pesticide resistance in more than 500 species of insects. The problems such insects pose-through their
impact on agriculture and medicine- are just some of the many ways that evolution has a direct connection
to our daily lives. Everywhere, all the time, populations of organisms are fine tuning adaptions to local
environments through the evolutionary process of natural selection. Given the dynamics of the Earth and its
life, it is not surprising that even the kinds of organisms on the planet- the species- have changed over the
time.

Lighthouses are towers with strong lights that help mariners plot their position, inform them that land
is near, and warn them of dangerous rocks and reefs. They are placed at prominent points on the coast and
on islands, reefs, and sandbars.

Every lighthouse has a distinctive pattern of light known as its characteristic. There are five basic
characteristics: fixed, flashing, occulting, group flashing, and group occulting. A fixed signal is a steady
beam. A flashing signal has periods of darkness longer than periods of light, while an occulting signal’s
periods of light are longer. A group- flashing light gives off two or more flashes at regular intervals, and a
group – occulting signal consists of a fixed light with two or more periods of darkness at regular intervals.
Some lighthouses use lights of different colors as well, and today, most lighthouses are also equipped with
radio beacons. The three types of apparatus used to produce the signals are the catoptric, in which metal is
used to reflect the light; the dioptric, in which glass is used; and the catadioptric, in which both glass and
metal are used.
In the daytime, lighthouses can usually be identified by their structure alone. The most typical structure
is a tower tapering at the top, but some, such as the Bastion Lighthouse on the Saint Lawrence River, are
shaped like pyramids, and others, such as the Race Rock light, look like wooden houses sitting on high
platforms. Still others, such as The American Shoal lighthouse off the Florida Coast, are skeletal towers of
steel. Where lighthouses might be confused in daylight, they can be distinguished by day- marker patterns
– designed of checks and stripes painted in vivid colors on lighthouse walls.
In the past, the job of lighthouse keeper was lonely and difficult if somewhat romantic. Lighthouse
keepers put in hours of tedious work maintaining the lights. Today, lighthouses are almost entirely
automated with humans supplying only occasional maintenance. Because of improvements in navigational
technology, the importance of lighthouses has diminished. There are only about 340 functioning
lighthouses in existence in the United States today, compared to about 1,500 in 1900, and there are only

about 1,400 functioning lighthouses outside the United States. Some decommissioned lighthouses have

II. Topic: why do people want to go on university education?
People study in college or university for many different reasons. I think the most important reason
is to gain more knowledge and learn more skills. Of course, there are also many other reasons that people
study in college such as to get more friends, and increase one's self-confidence.
These days, most jobs require people who are educated and have good job skills. Therefore, the
people who want a good job have to study hard and at least graduate with a high education. Furthermore,
as technology advances all over the world, more and more education is required of people.
Some people who study in college or university want to make more friends and increase their
interpersonal skills. They enjoy their lives in university or college and tend to socialize a lot. They can
meet more people who have the similar interests with themselves. They can go to university after school
and make more friends who they trust.
The people who graduate from college seem more confident in our community. These people are
more respected by society. Many people want to be respected and to be important by family, friends, their
bosses, and others in their lives. They find that most of them can confidently talk and do their jobs as they

are more educated. Therefore, most people want to get the confidence through the university or college
study. In today's society, people need more knowledge and skills to be adapted. The university and college
study is a good way to achieve this.
