answer to each of the question s from 45 to 54.
The ruined temples of Angkor
The ruined temples of Angkor are perhaps one of the most impressive Seven Wonders of the World.
Located in modern day Cambodia near Lake Tonle Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Asia, Angkor was the
seat of power for the Khmer Empire from the ninth to the most impressive ones in the world, rivaling the
pyramids of Giza in Egypt. Why this mighty civilization died out is a question that archeologists are now
only beginning to ponder. The answer, it turns out, may be linked with the availability of fresh water.
One possible explanation for the downfall of the Khmer Empire has to do with the inhabitants’
irrigation system. The temple and palaces of Angkor were constructed around a series of artificial reservoirs
and canals which were annually flooded to capacity by the Mekong River. Once filled, they were used to
irrigate the surrounding rice patties and farmland during the course of the year. Farmers were completely
dependent upon the water for their crucial rice crop. Without consistent irrigation, the farmers would have
been unable to maintain functional crop production.
Scientists speculate that toward the end of the Khmer Empire the hydraulic systems of the reservoirs
and canals broke down. The construction of hundreds of sandstone temples and palaces required an
enormous amount of physical labor. In addition, as the capital of the Khmer Empire, Angkor contained
upwards of one hundred thousand people who resided in and around Angkor. In order to feed so many
people, the local farmers were driven to grow food quicker amd more efficiently. After centuries of continual
use, the irrigation system was pushed beyond its capacity. Soil erosion, nutrient depletion, and the loss of
water led to decrease in the food supply. With less food available, the people of Angkor slowly began to
migrate to other parts of Cambodia thus leaving the marvellous city of Angkor to be swallowed by the
jungle. Therefore, it is speculated that the Khmer Empire may have fallen victim to its own decrepit
infrastructures.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the question s from 55 to 64.
All mammals feed their young. Beluga whale mothers, for example, nurse their calves for some
twenty months, until they are about to give birth again and their young are able to find their own food. The
behavior of feeding of the young is built into the reproductive system. It is a non-elective part of parental
care and the defining feature of a mammal, the most important thing that mammals whether marsupials,
platypuses, spiny anteaters, or placental mammals have in common.
But not all animal parents, even those that tend their offspring to the point of hatching or birth, feed
their young. Most egg-guarding fish do not, for the simple reason that their young are so much smaller than
the parents and eat food that is also much smaller than the food eaten by adults. In reptiles, the crocodile
mother protects her young after they have hatched and takes them down to the water, where they will find
food, but she does not actually feed them. Few insects feed their young after hatching, but some make other
arrangement, provisioning their cells and nests with caterpillars and spiders that they have paralyzed with
their venom and stored in a state of suspended animation so that their larvae might have a supply of fresh
food when they hatch.
For animals other than mammals, then, feeding is not intrinsic to parental care. Animals add it to
their reproductive strategies to give them an edge in their lifelong quest for descendants. The most
vulnerable moment in any animal's life is when it first finds itself completely on its own, when it must forage
and fend for itself. Feeding postpones that moment until a young animal has grown to such a size that it is
better able to cope. Young that are fed by their parents become nutritionally independent at a much greater
fraction of their full adult size. And in the meantime those young are shielded against the vagaries of
fluctuating of difficult-to-find supplies. Once a species does take the step of feeding its young, the young
become totally dependent on the extra effort. If both parents are removed, the young generally do not
survive.

A student’s sample writing:
Nowadays, our world always changes and integrates to develop. Besides that, the difference about
languages is becoming an important problem for communication between people in others countries. So
learning a foreign language at school is very important especially for children who will decide the world's
future. Firstly, teaching at least one foreign language for kids is probably a good idea. Children are like adult
persons with all curiousness about life. Children learning foreign languages at school will have basic
knowledge about culture and feature of foreign countries. It is great conditions for them to widen not only

their sight but also their soul. For example, a Vietnamese child who learns English will be aware more
information of Christmas and New Year in the world by herself (or himself). She (or he) can sing traditional
songs of English about this special holiday and understand about foreign music. Secondly, foreign languages
for children would surely be a good thing because it helps kids to communicate with foreign friends. That

skill for everyone in modern life, so it is so good for kids when they have many lovely relationships as soon
as they are so naive. For example, children can have a foreign pen pal and maybe sometimes it becomes a
special relationship in their life. In conclusion, foreign languages have many advantages to children. Basic
knowledge and communication skill are just a part of foreign language' advantages. However, it show that
teaching foreign languages at school for children like gives them confidence in modern era.
