READING
I. Choose the best options A, B, C or D to answer the following questions.
The growth of cities, the construction of hundreds of new factories, and the spread of railroads in the
United Stases before 1850 had increased the need for better illumination. But the lighting in American
homes had improved very little over that of ancient times. Through the colonial period, homes were lit with
tallow candles or with a lamp of the kind used in ancient Rome- a dish of fish oil or other animal or vegetable
oil in which a twisted rag served as a wick. Some people used lard, but they had to heat charcoal underneath
to keep it soft and burnable. The sperm whale provided superior burning oil, but this was expensive. In 1830
a new substance called “camphene” was patented, and it proved to be an remained expensive, had an
unpleasant odor, and also was dangerously explosive.
Between 1830 and 1850 it seemed that the only hope for cheaper illumination in the United States was
the wider use of gas. In the 1840s American gas manufacturers adopted improved British techniques for
producing illuminating gas from coal. But the expense of piping gas to the consumer remained so high that
until mid- century gas lighting was feasible only in urban areas, and only for public buildings for the wealthy. In
1854 a Canadian doctor, Abraham Gesner, patented a process for distilling a pitch like mineral found in New
Brunswick and Nova Scotia that produced illuminating gas and an oil that he called “kerosene” (from “keros”,
the Greek word for wax, and “ene” because it resembled camphene). Kerosene, though cheaper than
camphene, had an unpleasant odor, and Gesner never made his fortune from it. But Gesner had aroused a
new hope for making illuminating oil from a product coming out of North American mines.

IX. Read the following passages and choose the best answers to the questions.(5ms)
Having reached the highest point of our route according to plan, we discovered something the map
had not told us. It was impossible to climb down into the King valley. The river lay deep between mountain
sides that were almost vertical. We couldn’t find any animal tracks, which usually show the best way across
country, and the slopes were covered so thickly with bushes that we could not see the nature of the ground.
We had somehow to break through to the river which would give us our direction out of the mountains into
the inhabited lowlands.
Our guide cut a narrow path through the bushes with his long knife and we followed in single file.
Progress was slow. Then, when we thought we had really reached the river, we found ourselves instead on
the edge of a cliff with a straight drop of 1,000 feet to the water below. We climbed back up the slope and
began to look for another way down. We climbed, slipped, sweated, and scratched our hands to pieces and
finally arrived at the river. Happily we strode downhill along its bank without having to cut our way.
However, after a few miles the river entered a steep-sided gap between rocks and suddenly dropped thirty-
five feet over a waterfall. There was no path alongside it and no way round it.
Then one of the guides saw the way of overcoming the difficulty. There was a fallen tree lying upside
down over the waterfall with its leafy top resting on the opposite bank below the falls. Without hesitation he
climbed down the slippery trunk to show us how easy it was. Having got to fork of the tree, he moved hand
over hand along a branch for four or five feet with his legs hanging in space, then he dropped onto the flat
bank the other side, throwing his arms in the air like a footballer who has scored a goal and cheerfully
waving us on.

All languages have rules for forming words and for ordering those words in meaningful sentences. In
written languages, meaning is expressed through a system of characters and rules for combining those
characters. In spoken languages, meaning is expressed through a system of sounds and rules for combining
those sounds. Word order is more important in English than it is in some languages, such as Russian.
Like other languages English is always changing, but it changes very slowly. People invent new words,
borrow words from other languages, and change the meaning of words as needed. For example, the English
word byte was invented by computer specialists in 1959. The word tomato was borrowed from Nahuatl, an
American Indian language spoken in Mexico. The word meat once referred to food in general. People learn
English as well as languages by listening, copying what they hear, and using the language. Most children
learn their first language easily – and sometimes other languages as well.
