1: lt takes
a
long
time and a lot
of
money to develop
a
modern farm. Don has been
farming
on his own
ever since
his
father died
twenty
years
ago. He had
to
borrow the money
to buy new

machinery,
new
fertilizers,
and
new feeds. At
last
he is
beginning
to
make
money,
and

Passage
2: Most customers
who

go
to
a
supermarket
buy from a
shopping list. They
know
exactly
what
they
need
to
buy. Many customers
feel
pleased
and
relaxed
when they
reach the
check-out
counter
because the task
of
shopping
is
finished. An
important
fact in helping a customer
choose
what

to buy, is where
a
product
is
placed
on a shelf. A
product
which
is easy to see
sells best.
The
comfort
and convenience
of
shopping centers
is
another
factor which
makes
them
popular
with
customers,
and many
supermarkets
stay
open until
very late
at
night.

1.
Who buys
things from
a shopping
list?
2.
Why do many customers
feel
pleased
and relaxed
when
they reach
the

3.
What is
an
important
fact
in helping a customer choose what to
buy?.
4.
Does
a
product
which
is
easy
to

popular with customers?

Passage
3: A 3O-year study in New Zealand has revealed that a
person
who
gets
up early is less
Iikely to
survive the day than
the one
who
lies in bed till after I or 9 o'clock. A research team
studying a
group
of 500
people
found a significant link between early rising and heart disease.
We don't fully
undertand the link,'said Dr. Prudence White,
'bui
we
know
that
the risk of a heart
attack

is highest in the early
morning. Perhaps if
you're
llng in bed
you
stand more
chance of
surviving
an attack.'
Another
possibility
is that
people
who
get
up early in the morning are more likely to eat a
traditional
cholesterol-rich breaKast
of sausages, eggs, and bacon. So it seems we no longer need an excuse
for lying in bed longer.
Good neWs at last!
1. What has the 30-vear
studv in New Zealand revealed?
2. How
many
people
were involved in
the study?
3.
What

did
the research
team
find?
4.
What
is another
possibility?

5. What
does
it seem?
Passage 4: Plants supply
man with food, clothing, and shelter
-
his most important needs. Many of our
most
useful medicines are
also
made
from
plants.
In addition,
plants
add beauty and
pleasure
to
our lives. Most
people
enjoy the smell

of
flowers, the sight
of
afield of waving
grain,
and the
quiet
of
a forest. Not all
plants
are helpful to man. Some species
grow
in fields and
gardens
as weeds
that choke
off useful
plants.
Tiny bits of
pollen
from certain
plants
cause such diseases as
asthma
and hay
fever.
Other
plants
destroy millions
of

dollars
worth
of crops
yeaily.
l. What
do
plants

wifh?
2.
What
are
many
of

3. How
