NECKLINE
NECKLINE
The neckline is the top edge of a garment that surrounds the neck,
especially from the front view.
Neckline also refers to the overall line between all the layers of clothing
and the neck and shoulders of a person, ignoring the unseen
undergarments.
For each garment worn above the waist, the neckline is primarily a style
line and may be a boundary for further shaping of the upper edge of a
garment with,
for example, a collar, cowl, darts or pleats. In that respect it is similar to
the waistline and hemline.

are round and sit at the base of
the throat, and are also called the
T-shirt neckline or crew neck.

and sit at the base of the throat, and are also
called the T-shirt neckline or crew neck.
Jewel necks are circular and &t fairly tightly
around the neck. They are more often seen in
casual wear than in bridal gowns, but they work
with certain types of wedding dresses. Since the
jewel neck hugs the neck fairly closely, they work
best for slender necks and should be avoided by
brides with wide necks or broad shoulders
JEWEL NECKLINE
SCOOP NECK
these have a curved U-shape, with the arms of the U hanging on

the shoulders. The depth of the U can vary, ranging from demure
styles to plunging
SCOOP NECK
The U-shaped scoop neck varies in depth, from
conservative to scandalous, but one that falls no
more than 6 inches below the collarbone
generally covers the garments. The rounded
shape of the scoop neckline can be used to
balance out a more linear or angular face.

V-NECK
originate from the middle east, these are
formed by two diagonal lines from the
shoulders that meet on the chest creating a
V shape. The depth of the V can vary,
ranging from demure styles to plunging. The
surplice version of this neckline (known as a
portrait neckline) is an alternative. The V
may also be truncated by a small bottom
edge, forming a trapezoid.
V-NECK

V-necks are classic necklines and look good
on almost anyone.

They are generally seen in casual wear, but
V-necks are a wonderful choice to visually
“lengthen out” the features of brides who
have short necks or faces.

They are also generally a good choice for
someone with a rounded, softer face.
SQUARE NECK
These are characterized by three linear edges, the bottom edge meeting
the side edges at right angles. The bottom edge cuts across the &gure
horizontally and the side edges pass over the shoulders. A special case
of this is the slot neckline, in which the side edges are very close
(roughly the width of the collar-bone points), forming a narrow slot.
SQUARE NECK
Square necklines have gained popularity in recent
years. Their geometric shape – three lines at right
angles that form a square – is a modern and 3attering
alternative to traditional necklines. Square necks look
especially good on brides with rounded facial shapes.
They will emphasize a hefty build or broad shoulders, so
be careful with the square neckline if that’s your body
type.
DEEP OR PLUNGING NECK
these are low necklines, in
either V, U or square shapes,
that reveal various amounts of
cleavage.
BOAT NECK
these have a high, wide, slightly curved neckline

that pass past the collarbones and hang on both
shoulders, and are also called bateau necklines
or Sabrina necklines. A variation is the portrait
neckline.
Bateau neck wedding dresses have a narrow, wide
slot for the neck which is very modern and chic.
Bateau necklines 3atter brides with slender necks and
narrow shoulders, but emphasize wide necks and
shoulders. One word of caution about bateau neckline
for Mormon wedding dresses: make sure that the
opening doesn’t extend beyond the bra straps, or
there will be an issue with modesty or constantly
needing to adjust the dress to cover the garments.
BOAT NECK
OFF-THE-SHOULDER
these are similar to boat necklines but are
signi&cantly lower, below the shoulders and collar
bone. Usually these pass over the arms but, in the
strapless neckline style, may pass under the
arms. These necklines accentuate the shoulders
and neck of the wearer. the T-shirt neckline or
crew neck.
OFF-THE-SHOULDER
ONE-SHOULDER NECKLINES
one-shoulder necklines (one edge, nearly
linear)
these are asymmetrical linear necklines that cut
across the torso diagonally, usually from one
shoulder to under the other arm.
HALTER NECKLINES

halter necklines (linear, side edges
converge on neck)
these feature a V-neck or scoop front
neckline with straps which wrap around
and connect at the nape of the neck.
SWEETHEART NECKLINE
sweetheart necklines (side edges linear,
curved bottom edge concave down)
these have a curved bottom edge that is
concave down and usually doubly scalloped to
resemble the top half of a heart. The side edges
often converge on the neck, similar to halter
necklines. Sweetheart necklines accentuate the
bosom.
The sweetheart neck is similar to a
square neck but it is scalloped at the
bottom, giving the rounded
appearance of a heart. Because of its
romantic symbolism and its suggestion
of innocence and joy, the sweetheart
neckline is an extremely popular
choice for weddings.
SWEETHEART
NECKLINE
SWEETHEART NECKLINE
Almost any bride can pull o= a sweetheart
neckline, but its soft curves especially
complement angular facial features and
bone structures.
KEYHOLE NECKLINES

keyhole necklines
these are similar to halter necklines, but the
converging diagonal lines meet in front of the
neck, forming a "keyhole". More generally,
these feature a central hole, usually just
below the collar bones. These necklines are
seen infrequently.
SURPLICE NECKLINE
these are similar to how a bathrobe's
neckline is formed by one side of the
garment overlapping the other. For a
dress, the lower layer is usually sewn to
the top layer just under the bust.
SURPLICE NECKLINE
Similar to a bathrobe, the surplice neckline forms a V
shape with one side overlapping the other. A surplice
wedding dress with frog closures lining the overlapping
hem looks very exotic. The surplice neckline balances
round facial features and adds length to the face and
neck. It is a very popular neckline for women’s
formalwear, and it’s easy to &nd surplice bridesmaids’
dresses to complement the bride’s gown.
