Good evening. Welcome to our Science for Fun Program. This week we've
received a lot of questions asking about life on the moon. We've talked to some
experts and this is what we've found out. There is no water or air on the moon. It
is all (51) because there is no air. Of course, there will be no
music, no sounds. There are no rivers and no lakes. At night it is very cold. The
temperature goes down to 151C below zero. But during the day the temperature
rises to 100C above zero.
There are great round (52) on the moon. They look like big
lakes. They are called craters. There are more than 30,000 craters on the moon.
There are also high mountains. The highest mountains on the moon are about
26,000 feet or 8,000 meters high.
And here is something very interesting to know: on the moon you weigh
one sixth (53) what you weigh on earth. If you weigh 50 kilos,
on the moon you (54) weigh only a little more than 8 kilos. You
will be able to jump very high, even higher than an Olympic Champion. You
can (55)very long steps as well. And Maybe you wont sleep
very well because one day on the moon lasts for two weeks.
So, is there life on the moon? Ill leave the question for you to answer
yourself.

Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made use of
various forms of communication. Generally, this expression of thoughts and
feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When there is a language barrier,
communication is accomplished through sign language in which motions stand
for letters, words, and ideas. Tourists, the deaf, and the mute have had to resort
to this form of expression. Many of these symbols of whole words are very
picturesque and exact and can be used internationally; spelling, however,
cannot.
Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either
internationally or unintentionally. A wink can be a way of flirting or indicating
that the party is only joking. A nod signifies approval, while shaking the head
indicates a negative reaction.
Other forms of nonlinguistic language can be found in Braille (a system
of raised dots read with the fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke
signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide, warn, and instruct people.
While verbalization is the most common form of language, other systems
and techniques also express human thoughts and feelings.
56. Which of the following best summarizes this passage?
A. When language is a barrier, people will find other forms of
communication.
B. Everybody uses only one form of communication.
C. Nonlinguistic language is invaluable to foreigners.

fingertips

The wind controls our planet's weather and climate. But how much do we
understand about this complete force (71) can kill and spread
fear.

One night of October 15, 1987, the south of England was (62)
by strong winds. Gusts of over 130 km/h (63) through the region.
Nineteen people were killed, Ê1.5-billion worth of damage was (64)
and 19 billion trees were blown down in just a few hours.
Although people thought of this (65) hurricane, the winds of
1987 were only a (66) 7 storm. They remain far better known
than much more serious storms of January 25, 1990, (67) most of
Britain was hit by daytime winds of up to 173 km/h. On this occasion, 47
people were killed, even though, unlike in 1987, the weather (68)
issued accurate warnings.
Extreme weather events such as these are dramatic reminders of the (69)
of the wind. It is one part of the weather that people generally do
not give a second (70) to, but across the world the wind plays a
crucial role in people's lives.

MY AMBITIONS
When I grow up, I would like to become either a
scientist
or a teacher. I am so very good at science at school
and
I find it out very interesting to learn about how the
world works. I know that it would be mean going
to university
and studying quite hard. You also have to be good
at math,
so that you can do all the necessary calculations. I
need to work hard in that subject because of it is
not one I find easy.
If I cannot be a scientist , I would like to teach. I
love to working with children and I think I am
quite good at explaining things more clearly. You
have to know the subject you teach very well, and
you need a lots of patience. You also need to go to
university and get the right qualifications.
