The party began at about 5 p.m There were about 30 of us gathering in Mai’s house. She didn’t like having
the party at a restaurant because it is expensive.
We gave presents to Mai and she happily opened them. It must really be exciting to receive all those
presents. After that Mai’s mother served us soft drinks and fruits. We then listened to music and played
cards. The winners were given prizes. At about 7 p.m Mai’s mother brought out the birthday cake. It was
beautifully decorated with pink and white icing with 16 colorful candles on it. We all clapped our hands

eagerly and sang “ Happy birthday” as she blew out the candles and cut the cake. We helped ourselves to
slices of the delicious cake and sang all the songs that we knew.
Finally, at about 9 p.m the party came to an end. We all tired but happy. The parents of other children came
to collect them by motorbikes. I helped Mai and her mother clean up the mess we had made. After that I
walked home, which was only 3 doors away.

Read the passage carefully and answer the questions below:
Along with jogging and swimming, cycling is one of the best all-round forms of
exercise. It can help to increase your strength and energy, giving you more efficient muscles
and stronger heart. But increasing your strength is not the only advantage of cycling. Because
you’re not carrying the weight of your body on your feet, it’s a good form of exercise for
people with painful feet or backs. However, with all forms of exercise it’s important to start
slowly and build up gently. Doing too much and too quickly can damage muscles that aren’t
used to working. If you have any doubts about taking up cycling for health reasons, talk to

your doctor and ask his/her advice.
Ideally, you should be cycling at least two or three times a week. For the exercise to be
doing you good, you should get a little out of breath. Don’t worry that if you begin to lose
your breath, it could be dangerous and there must be something wrong with your heart. This
is simply not true; shortness of breath shows that the exercise is having the right effect.
However, if you find you are in pain then you should stop and take a rest.
