SUMMARY

Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegler has been taxonomically studied in Vietnam for 130 years ago with
collections of authentic specimens at that time, as type of Lentinus tonkinensis Pat. (now treated as synonym),
collected from Ba Vi mountainous region by Balansa, deposited in Paris and recently supplemented with some
newly-collected strains, native to high mountainous regions, North Vietnam: Cao Bang and Sa Pa shiitake, near
to South China. Some Shiitake strains obtained from lapan: D2 Tottori, China: Yunnan and Changsha City
were analysed comparatively with respect to both morphological and molecular characteristics. It is interesting
to find that the Vietnam natively geographical races of Shiitake collected in Cao Bang, Sa Pa mountains, North
Vietnam are so clearly segregated fiom strains imported from Changsha City, Yunnan (China) and Tottori
(Japan) - that are East Asian races, typical temperate Shiitake Lentinula edode,s, that markedly similar to
Southeast Asian - tropical Shiitake forms, particularly close to sister species Lentinula lateritia ar'd L.
novaezelandieae, based orr both D and ITS sequences. Recently, in South Vietnam, for the first time, other
