THE EVILS OF SMOKING
Last Thursday an old man came to our school to talk about the evils of smoking. He said
he wouldn't talk for too long, and we saw him take his watch off and lay it on the table. I can't
remember what he said about smoking because John and I had other things to think
about. He finished when the bell rang for break, and the headmaster told us to go out. John
happened to slip when he was passing the teacher's table.
In the playground John showed me the watch. He put it on his wrist, and it looked lovely. I
was wishing that I'd been the one to slip by the table, because it was a beautiful gold watch.
The headmaster came outside then, and the old man was with him. They walked about, looking
around and talking all the time. After a bit the bell rang, and we came into our class again.
The headmaster said, "I've got a little job for you, boys. This gentleman, our lecturer, has
lost his watch in the playground. It has happened before, he says - it just slips off his wrist. So
look around for it, will you? See if you are clever enough to find it. The boy who can find it will get
a useful reward."
Well, of course we all walked about the playground, looking for the watch. And I wasn't
surprised at all when John bent down as if he was picking something up. Then he hurried past
me towards the headmaster and the old man.
"Where are you going?" I called out, though I knew very well where he was going. And
the next minute John was smiling, handing over the watch to the old man and waiting for a
reward.
But the old man didn't seem pleased at all. In fact he looked quite angry as if he
wanted to put a knife into John's heart. Then both the headmaster and the old man burst out

laughing. Later, John said to me that the old man didn't even say "Thank you" when he gave
back to him the watch.
The thing that made everybody, except me, surprised was that John didn't get any
reward. When he reminded the headmaster about it, he said " Well, I will give you a useful
reward that you will never forget. Take this sheet of paper and write a long composition on the
evils of smoking".
Of course John didn't know what to write.
21. What were the two boys thinking about during the lecture?
A. They were not thinking about anything
B. They were thinking about the evils of smoking
C. About the watch - and how to get it, perhaps.
D. They thought that the headmaster was very clever.
22. Why did the story-teller wish that he had slipped?
A. Because it was a beautiful watch.
B. He thought he could have taken the watch if he had slipped.
C. If that had happened, the watch wouldn't have been lost.
D. In that case he wouldn't have given it back to the lecturer.
23. Why did the two men come out to the playground?
A. Because that was where the watch was lost
B. It was day-time, and they needed some fresh air.
C. It was just a lucky chance that they came out mere.
D. They came out in order to support the headmaster's story.
24. What was the purpose of the promised reward?
A. People who find things must have a reward.
B. It was a clever trap of the headmaster to find the watch.
C. It was to encourage the boys to find the watch.
D. The watch was a valuable one, so a reward was necessary.
25. When John "bent down", what was he trying to do?
A. He had to bend down in order to pick up the watch.
B. He was trying to hide the fact that he had found the watch

C. The watch had slipped off his wrist, and he was trying to pick it up.
D. He was pretending to have found the watch in the playground

Why is it necessary to learn E?
E is the most international of languages. It is spoken all over the world. In our
country E is taught in schools and widely used in business. If we know E, we can
read various kinds of E books to widen our knowledge, communicate with most
foreigners easily, and above all, find a good job in a business company. In brief, it
is very necessary for us to learn E. If we know E well, we may have more chance
of improving our lives.
The reasons why the young people prefer to live in town
While many old people dream of peaceful countryside and pure air, most young
ones prefer life in towns, especially in big cities. The town can provide them with
all comforts and conveniences such as electricity, drinking-water, good means pf
transportation, and various kinds of entertainment. They can buy everything they
need and get all services quickly and easily. Moreover, they can expect to find jobs
that are both interesting and well paid. There is good reason to believe that young
people prefer to live in towns and cities because they hope to enjoy benefits of
modern life.
In your opinion, which job is the most interesting? Why?
There are plenty of good jobs in our society. In my opinion, working as a tourist
guide is the most interesting. Being a tourist guide enables us to know more about
our country, visit beautiful places and meet all kinds of people. Above all, when
dealing with foreign tourist, we have good opportunities to practise our E and
widen our knowledge. Besides, the salary of a tourist guide is satisfactory. I will

apply for a job at a tourist agency and become a tourist guide when I have
graduated from high school and obtained a B level certificate of E.
Why are good books good teachers and friends?
I am very fond of books. I enjoy reading books at weekend and whenever I have
free time. I read simple E books, which help to improve my E, I also read serious
Vietnamese books on general sciences to widen my knowledge. Through these
good books, I can learn a great deal more about human civilization, the wonders of
nature, and amazing inventions and discoveries of great men in the world. In
addition, I sometime read hurnorous stories to relax my mind and even to remove
my troubles. I wonder if there are people who can ever deny that good books are
really good teacher and friends.
How do you spend an evening when it rains?
Many young people dislike a rainy evening because they cannot go out and have
fun. To me it is not so boring. I can find lost of things to spend an evening when it
rains. First of all, there are assignments that I have to finish and lessons that I need
to review for the next day’s classes. Then, I can amuse myself by playing my
guitar for a while. If I am not in the mood for music, I can still join my family in
the living-room for a play on television or a video film. A rainy evening is often
not much fun if one spends it doing nothing but it does seem to pass so pleasantly
and quickly when one is happy with so many things one can do.
The advantages and disadvantages of television
Televition is a very popular means of communication as it is enjoyed by millions
of people all over the world. It entertains us with dances, plays and songs. It helps
to widen our knowledge with its instructive talk shows, news programmes and
documentary films. It is also used for educational purposes, especially in remote
areas where there are no schools and teachers. However, televition also has
disadvantages. Many children are so interested in watching TV that they neglect
their studies. Besides, not all TV programmes are good. Some of the films which
are shown on televition encourage violence and sexuality. They have bad influence
on small children and teenagers. Since televition has an extremely wide influence

on the entire world, it is essential to provide as many good TV programmes as
possible.
Describe your best friend and tell why you like her or him
Lan is my best friend. She is also my classmate. She is a sixteen year old girl with
a slender build and a fair complexion. She has long black hair and a charming ovl
face with big brown eyes. At school she is very studious and good at every
subject. She help me a great deal with my studies. Her behaviour is also admirable.
She is simple, friendly and kind to everybody. At home she spends most of her
spare time looking after her little brothers and sister and helping her mother with
the housework. We all love and respect Lan. She is a good example to us all.
The city or town where you are living
I live in Ho Chi Minh City, the largest city in VN . It has a population of about 5
million. In the center of the city the streets are wide and crowded with people and
vehicles. There are many big stores, hotels, theatres and tall buildings. However, in
the suburbs the roads are narrow and in bad condition, and the houses are small
and ugly. There are several interesting sights in HCM City such as the zoo, the Ben
Thanh Market, the Dam Sen Park, the Thong Nhat palace, and the Vinh Nghiem
pagoda. There have been great changes in this city for the last 10 years. Life has
become much better for most of its residents.
You have just received some photos from a friend who visited you last month.
You write a letter of thanks and tell your friend briefly what has happened in
your life since then.
Dear lan,
I have just received several photos of you and me, which were taken during your
visit to my family last month. You look so young and lovely.
Some important things have happened to me since you left us to return to your
hometomn. I was suddenly taken ill, and it was serious enough for me to go to a
doctor, who recommended a week’s rest at home. I was seventeen on the day I
completely recovered from my illness, so my parents held a big party for me. It
was great fun, for there were many guests including several of our old friends. I am

now talking a preparation course for the B level certificate of E. I will take the
exam early next month.
Thank you very much for your photos.
Please send my best wishes to your family.

The benefits of sports and physical exercises
Many people thinks that sports and physical axecises are unimportant things. Some
even consider them mere amuserments. But in actual fact, sports and physical
exercises are very helpful. Sports such as running, swimming and boxing make our
body strong, prevent us from getting too fat and keeps us healthy. They also prove
to be effective treatment for some illnesses such as rheumatism, stomachache,
mental sickness and heart trouble. Physical activities in the form of good games are
particularly valuable for character training. They can help to omprove our
intelligence, patience, self-discipline and unselfishness. Because of their great
benefits, sports and physical exercises are enjoyed by millions of people all over
the world.

HCM City for some days. I’m sure you will have a good time here because there
are several interesting places for you to see. You can go on a city sight-seeing tour
that includes the City Hall, the Thong Nhat Palace, the Vinh Nghiem Pagoda, the
Zoo, and the Dam Sen Amusement Park. All of these sights are in or near the
centre of thr city. If you have time, you can pay a visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels,
which are about 40 miles from the city centre. There you will see, as well as learn
from the guide, many interesting things conerning our revolutionary war. At
present I’m not very busy, so I’ll be glad to act as your guide during your holiday
in my city.
I’m looking forward to seeing you.

The house where i am living
My family consists of 4 people. They are my parents, my sister and me. We are
living in a large house in a suburb of HCM City. The house is made of bricks and
covered with red tiles. It has 5 rooms including a living-room, 3 bedrooms and a
kitchen. The living-room, which is rather large, is decorated with beautiful pictures
on the walls. The bedrooms are nice, one is for my parents and the other two for
my sister and me. The kitchen is tidy and well equipped with a gas cooker, a
washing-machine and a refrigerator. Around the house is a large garden with many
fruit-trees and flowers. I like this house very much. It is the place where i was born
and grew up. It has given me good memories since my childhood. I wish i would
live in it forever.
My hobbies
Almost everybody has some kind of hobby. my hobbies are listening to music and
watching televition. i’m very fond of music. when i’m free, i often listen to my
favourite songs from an old cassette recorder. At weekends, i usually go to music
shops in the downtown areas to buy good CD’s. Of the famous pop singers, i prefer
Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Madona and paul McCartney. I also spend an hour
after diner watching news and documentary programmes. i particularly enjoy the
programme “ The world here and there” because it broadens my knowledge of
nature and human civilizations. I think that my hobbies are very useful. They

widen my knowledge, relax my mind, and make me feel better about myself.
My daily activities
Im ahigh school student
Every morning from Monday to saturday, i get up at 6 o’clock. After breakfast, i
go to school by bicycle. It takes me about 20 minites to go from my house to my
school. Usually, i study at school until 11:30 a.m. I return home at noon ti have
lunch with m family. In the afternoon I attend E and compurter course. I always get
home just in time for dinner at 7:30 p.m. After dinner, while my parents are

I am free at weekend. On Sunday mornings, I get up later than usual. Then I often
go shopping downtown with my friends. Sometime we go for a picnic in the
countryside. On rainy Sundays, I stay at home reading books and listening to
music. I’m quite happy with my daily activities
A historical place in HCM city
There are several historcal places in HCM city, among them the Nha Rong what is
considered the most famous. It was the very place where Uncle Ho boarded a
French merchant ship to go abroad. He was trying to find a plan for national
salvation. In the memorial building there, we can see many pictures and souvenirs
of our Uncle’s revolutionary life. There are also many historic documents and
illustrations about our people’s resistance against the French colonialists and the
American imperialists. Around the building is a large garden with many trees and
beautiful flowers, which have been brought from different regions of the country.
The Nha Rong Wharf is always crowded with people especially young people.
They go there to study President Ho’s revolutionary life and our people’s good
traditions.
My career!(nghề nghiệp)
I graduated from University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City / Hong Bang
University / Marketing University in 2003 and now I work in Taxation Unit in
District 3 (CCTQ3) as an officer. I have worked here for 18 months / since

September in 2007. I work here because I want to have a stable job (công việc ổn
định). I hope I can put my knowledge into my job (áp dụng kiến thức vào công
việc) to do it easily and convinent (thuận tiện). I’m allocated jobs (phân công
công việc) with checking and storing legal documents, files, preparing a monthly
and quarterly report to higher level on my work (báo cáo hàng tháng và hàng qúy
lên cấp trên). It satifies me that’s why I love my job.
A national Hero
The are many heroes and heroes in our history, but President Ho is known as one
of the most famous. He was the founder of the VN Communist Party, which led the
victorious Revolution of 1945. This event brought independence and freedom to
our people after nearly 100 years of harsh French domination. But the enemies
invaded our country again. They wanted to have our people live in slavery. Once
more, under President Ho’s leadership, our people successively defeated he french
colonialists and the American imperialists, liberated South VN and reunified the
whole country in 1975. President Ho is respected and worshipped by the
Vietnamese people. Unesco, a prestigious international organization, has also
selected him as a national hero as well as an outstanding writer. Thanks to him, we
are now living in the most glorious era in our national history.
My experience of learning E
I have studied E for 5 years. I can write and speak E fairly well now. From my own
experience, i think that if we want to write E correctly, we should master its
grammatical rules and enough time reading the E books which suit our level. We
can find these graded books in bookshops .As to improving our speaking and
listening abilities in E, we should carry out intensive practice by listening to E
recordings and radio broadcasts, imitating the native speaker’s voice as frequently
as possible. It is also good for us to join an E-speaking club to have the opportunity
of speaking E with other people. Above all, the learning of any language requires
great effort and patience. If we try hard and work methodically, ai;m sure, we can
make good progress in learning E.
VN, my beloved homeland

My beloved homeland is VN. It is country in South East Asia with a population of
over 80 million and a land area of about 330,000 km2. Our country is very rich in
natural resources. The subsoil in many regions contains a great quantity of mineral
ores and in the immenes forests there are various kinds of valuable trees and wild
animals. The Vietnamese coastline very long and beautiful with a large fishing
industry. Our nation was established about 4.000 years ago. The Vietnamese
people are very intelligent and hard working. Above all, we have a long and heroic
history. Our people have defeated foreign invaders many times. Nowadays, Viet
Nam is under a socialist regime. There have been great changes in our country in
recent years. The standard of living has greatly improved. I love my homeland and
feel very proud of it.
The advantages and disadvantages of living in the city
There are many advantages as well as disadvantages of living in the city. In the
city, the houses are supplied with electricity and drinking-water. People go from
place very quickly by motorbike, by bus or taxi. Housewives can buy everything
they need in shops and supermarkets everywhere. Children study at the schools
near their houses. For entertainment, city people can go to theatres and amusement
centres. Urban workers always earn more money than the labourers do in the
countryside. However, the pollution of air, water and noise in the city badly affects
people’s health. Traffic accidents and social evils, which are common in the city,
also threaten people’s safety and happiness. Young people find it more suitable to
live in the city but it is not so good for the old to live there.
The problem of overpopulation
Overpopulation is a serious problem not only for each family but also for the
whole notion. In a large family, the parents cannot earn enough money to provide
for their children. The children themselves are not well nourished or well educated.
It’s hard for these physically and mentally disadvantaged young people to become
qualified citizens to serve their country. Besides, the mothers who have given birth
so many times are certainly unluckly in their lives. Our goverment cannot deal
with such a serious problem while the country is still underdeveloped. If the

population increases uncontrollably, the goverment will not be able to provide
enough food, housing, work or education for so many people at the same time. As
a result, people’s lives will become worse. To ensure happiness, each married
couple should have only 2 children.
The traffic problems of HCM city
HCM city is the large city in VN. It has a population of 7 million with over 3
million vehicles of all kinds. Moreover, the streets are narrow and in bad condition.
Worse still, many people disobey the traffic regulations. Consequently, there are
many traffic accidents, which kill and injure hundreds of people every month.
Furthermore, there are always traffic jams in the downtown areas during rush
hours, which is a terrible waste of time and money for the city people. To solve the
above problem, the authorities should have the streets repaired and widened. They
should also develop a good system of public transport to reduce the number of
motorcycle moving along the streets. Above all, the city people should be educated
to obey the traffic rules. I hope that all effective measures, including severe
penalties for traffic violations, will be carried out to reduce the number of traffic
accidents.
