Passage 1
For many years people believed that the cleverest animals after man were chimpazees. Now, however, there is proof that
dolphins may be even cleverer than these big apes.
Although a dolphin lives in the sea, it is not a fish. It is a mammal. It is in many ways, therefore, like a human being.
Dolphins have a simple language. They are able to talk to one another. It may be possible for man to learn how to talk to
dolphins. But this will not be easy because dolphines cannot hear the kind of sounds man can make. If man wants to talk to
dolphins, he will have to make a third language which both he and the dolphins can understand.

2. Where do dolphins live ?

3. How do they talk to one another ?

4. Why is difficult for man to learn how to talk to dolphins ?

Mediterranean differ greatly in their attitudes to this problem. While some countries want to start cleaning up the
Mediterranean, others have begun building new ports to develop their oil wells and natural gas fields. Industries have now
grown in all the countries surrounding Mediterranean. It will take a century for all the water in the Mediterranean to drain
into the Atlantic Ocean, and be replaced by clean water. Three great rivers, the Niles, Po, and Rhome, all flow into the

Passage 1
After many days alone at sea, Joshua Slocum saw a sailor steering his ship. It was the captain of the Pinta, one of
Columbuss ship. in writing of his round-the-world journey in the 1980s Slocum told of how real the captain seemed.
Sir Ernest Shacleton told a similar story. He and two friends were tramping thirty six miles across South Geogia,
Antarctica, in 1914. They became aware of a fourth member of the group. It guided them across the snow, rock, and ice of
the island. No one knows yet why people, alone or with others, imagine such companions. When we find the reason, it will
be important, especially to astronauts and deep-sea explorers, who must work in lonely places. It may also explain why
children often tell of unreal playmates.

big buildings, many stories high, in them you may buy almost anything you want, from a box of matches to a car.
You can spend hours wandering about one of these stores, and you will probably lose your way while you are doing so, in
spite of notices pointing the way to the lifts and entrances.
If you have been in the stores so long that you feel hungry, you will not need to leave the building, for nearly all the big
stores have cafes, snackbars or restaurants. You can ring up a friend from a telephone box and you may call at the theater
agency to book a seat for an evening show.

Although the shops usually close at 5:30 or 6:00 p.m, on Thursday the West End stores and most other shops there stay

Passage 4
A solar eclpise occurs when the Mount moves in front of the Sun and hides at least some part of the Sun from the Earth. In
a partial eclpise, the moon covers part of the Sun ; in an annular eclipse, the moon covers the center of the Sun, leaving a
bright ring of light around the moon : in a total eclipse, the Sun is completely covered by the Moon.
It seems rather improbably that a celestail body the size of the Moon could completely block out the trememdously
immense Sun, as happens during a total eclipse, but this is exactly what happens. Although the Moon is considerably smaller
in size than the Sun, the Moon is able to cover the Sun because of their relative distances from the Earth.
1. How many types of solar eclpise are there ? What are they ?
2. In which type of eclpise is the Sun entirely covered ?
3. How big is the Moon compared with the Sun ?
4. What does their in Paragraph 2 refer to ?
5. Despite its size, why is the Moon able to block out the Sun ?

Passage 1
Most people think of deserts as dry, flat areas with little vegetation and little or no rainfall, but this is hardly true. Many
deserts have varied geographical formations and a permanent source of water. Although deserts do not receive a high

amount of rainfall to be classified as a desert, an area must get less than twenty-five centimeters of rainfall per year.. There
are many plants that thrive on only small amount of water, and deserts are often full of such plant life.
Desert plants have a variety of mechanisms for obtaining the water needed for survival. Some plants, such as cactus are
able to store large amounts of water in their leaves or sterms ; after a rainfall these plants absorb a large supply of water to
last until the next rainfall. Other plants, such as the mesquites have extraordinary deep root systems that allow them to obtain
water from far below the deserts arid surface.
1. What do most people think about deserts ?
2. What is actually true about deserts ?
3. When is an area called a desert ?
4. According to the passage, do all deserts plants have the same mechanisms for obtaining the water needed for survival ?
5. How do mesquites obtain water for their survival ?
