Reality TV is a term for television shows based on
a group of real people who are put in an unusual
or dangerous situation, or given the chance to
achieve an ambition. Their experiences are shown
live on television as entertainment. Reality TV
often takes the form of a game, in which the
viewers vote for people to leave the show until
there is only one left. This person is the winner
and receives a prize.

T h e c a b le ra c e r

R

obinson Diaz lives in a small cottage high in the
Andes Mountains of South America. Diaz is a
‘cable racer’, and every morning he faces the
difficult task of taking the local teacher to her school.
To do this, he first walks for an hour up to a place the
locals call Los Pinos (the Pine Trees), right at the edge
of the 120-metre deep 1gorge of the Negro valley. Here,
one end of a thick metal cable has been fixed to a
wooden post. The cable stretches right across the deep
valley to the other side, a kilometre away.
A metal hook is fixed to the cable, with leather
straps hanging from it. Diaz fastens the straps around
his shoulders and waist, does a quick safety check and
then, without hesitating, throws himself off the edge of
the mountain. Attached to the cable by only the metal
hook, he rapidly picks up speed and soon he is racing
through the air. Crossing the valley by wire takes him
30 seconds, instead of the two hours it would take him
to walk down through the 2snake-infested rain forest
and climb up the steep muddy slopes on the other side.
As Diaz begins his trip, Diana Rios, a 23-year-old
elementary teacher, is waiting on the other side of the
gorge for the moment when he will come racing
through the 3mist towards her at 160 kph. She will then
return with him, hanging on to him as he goes back
along a second cable. Diana had no idea when she took
the teaching job that just getting to work in the village

school would be so dangerous. ‘At first I wanted to
cry,’ she says,4clutching her books as the metal cable
starts to 5rattle violently at Diaz’s approach. ‘But I soon
got used to it.’ She still prefers to go with Diaz, though,
rather than making the frightening and hazardous
crossing on her own.

For the inhabitants of Los Pinos, the wire cable is a
35 lifeline. For more than 50 years, it has served the
community as a form of transport to and from the rest of
the world. Everything that comes arrives via the cable bricks and wood for building, sacks of rice and com.
Puppies are held between the knees of young men like
40 Diaz who act as ‘cable-racers’, and go flying over the
gorge. Pregnant mothers, who must get to the nearest
clinic, cross the wire during the darkness of the night,
returning with their newborn babies. It is dangerous, but
they have no choice.
45
This time Robinson Diaz makes a perfect landing on
Diana’s side of the gorge. For him, the dangers of his
daily journey are 6insignificant. ‘What T’m really scared
of is snakes,’ he says. ‘This is nothing in comparison.’
Then Diana straps herself into her harness and hooks
so herself up to the wire behind Diaz, holding on to him
tightly. He turns, 1flashes her a smile, releases the brake
and kicks away. Within seconds, teacher and cable-racer
have disappeared back into the mist.

My twin sister, Lucy, and I have an identical interest in
BMX racing. We got into riding competitions by accident
really, when Lucy entered a cross-country cycle race and
came second. She came home full of the thrill of it all,
and started going regularly. I was bored staying at home
while she was getting all the excitement, so 1 decided to
take it up too. It didn’t take long before I found the speed
and element of danger it involved as exciting as she did.
There are only about twenty girls who race in the UK
compared to over 300 boys, but we like being treated the
same as the boys. We’re not stupid, but we do like taking
risks - and we both want to be BMX champions one day!

My dad and I wanted to do something different one
40
weekend so we decided to try hang gliding, and my first
lesson was brilliant! The more 1 did, the more I enjoyed it
and I soon forgot to be scared. I started by taking off from
small hills but now I can go as high as 100 metres and

I’m getting more adventurous and confident all the time. 4s
It’s not as dangerous as people think and I’ve never hurt
myself doing it. My friends think I’m crazy but I love the
sense of freedom I get when I’m gliding up there in the
air. Unfortunately, it isn’t great for meeting people of my
own age as most people I glide with are older than me, so so
I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone who wants to find a
boyfriend!

In adventure racing, you’re in a team covering vast
distances out in the wild, doing different things swimming, canoeing, running and so on. I had a very
lucky introduction to it - 1 was a last-minute replacement
for someone in a team going to Nepal. I’d never been in
an adventure race before, but I’d lived in Nepal for two
years and done a lot of mountain climbing there as well
as mountain biking and white water rafting. In the race,
we covered 900 km and the winning team finished in just
under five days. Our team did it in seven, which wasn’t
bad, although of course it would have been great to come
first. What I love about adventure racing is that you often
compete in exotic places that you might never get the
chance to visit otherwise. I also love the fact that it is a
very friendly world - even the top athletes mix with the

beginners.

E Peter Beaumont
My brother had started mountain climbing and when I
heard about it from him it seemed to me that it was
something I simply had to do. So he arranged to take me ss
when he next went climbing locally. It was raining, so we
tried climbing in the rain, slipping about on wet, polished
stone. It was hardly the best start, but I loved it. When the
winter came, we went to the mountains in North Wales to
try climbing on ice. I climbed by instinct, just picking it
so
up as I went along, but these days most people start safely
indoors, and learn the/basics there. You’ll find a lot of
sports centres nowadays have indoor climbing walls so
newcomers can get a feel for the sport and build up their
confidence before they tackle a real mountain. As a result, ss
climbing is becoming an increasingly popular activity but it remains one of one of the most dramatic sports on
the planet.

My lifelong addiction to walking began when I was a
child. I used to meet up with my friends and go on long
walks. I remember standing in the country one day with
everything covered in frost. Then the sun suddenly came
out and all the frost melted off the trees in a matter of

seconds. It was the sort of thing you’d never see from a
motor car. That kind of experience made me the person I
am. I still walk whenever I can, although I’m often too
busy for day-long walks now. My main concern now is
encouraging people to take greater care of the world’s
most important and popular sites of natural beauty.
